    And a weeping woman at Hira grieves in tears,

    and beats her own cheek and necklace-bearing neck,

    وَلَوَ عَلِمَتْ لَمْ تَبْكِ إِلاّ محمَّدا

    over one who died after the Prophet Muhammad;

    had she known, she would have wept for Muhammad alone.

    We were bereaved of the best of people, living and dead,

    and the nearest of them in station to the Lord of creation,

    and the one whose loss was most grievous to every Muslim,

    and the most open-handed among all people.

    وإنْ كانَ حيّاً كان نوراً مجدَّدا

    Whenever speech came from him, it was rightly guided;

    and while he lived, he was a light renewed.

    Indeed, his character inherited glory and piety,

    so you encountered him only rightly guided and guiding others.
