The upheavals of war have left us a remnant
The events of wars have left us a legacy
of the choicest gift of our Lord, the Bestower:
From the best honey of our Generous Lord

white, with lofty crests, and camel herds at watering-places,
White and towering homes, and pastures
stout of frame and plentiful in milk,
With trunks like monks, abundant with fruit

like black lava beds, with their abundant, brimming milk freely offered
Offering their fill of milk freely like she-camels
to the neighbor, the cousin, and the visiting guest.
To neighbor, cousin, and visitor alike

And bickering like racehorses well-fed
barley fodder and freshly cut herbage.
On barley and cut clover

Their lower legs were lean, while muscle filled out
Bared of saddle-bags, loaded at the withers
their sleek backs and the rest of their limbs.
With blankets and all trappings

Long-necked, they are roused by shouting when they go out at dawn,
Led to the war cries if they march by night
as hunting hounds eagerly answer the huntsman.
Doing the work of darkness, barking like dogs

They guard the settlements' grazing herds, and at times
Shielding the abodes by night, and at times
strike down the enemy and return with spoils.
Raiding the foe, returning with spoils

Wild as wild beasts, swift-flying in battle,
A herd of wild beasts when war calls
grim in the encounter, clearly displaying noble breeding.
Baring their fangs, showing their claws

Fed at ease, they grew full-bodied,
Fattened in leisure, grown fat
dense of flesh, light of limb-bone.
Light, fast fillies of excellent stock

They march out with double armor
and with firmly fashioned, true-striking spears, straightened in the clamp,
And piercing blades unsheathed

and keen swords, their blunt thickness stripped away by the polishers,
With fine swords the scabbards stripped off
and with every awe-inspiring man of noble lineage,
And all the noble war gear

who joins his right hand to a supple, well-balanced blade,
They join the right hand with trusted comrades
whose forging was entrusted to Khabbab,
And the command falls to an excellent leader

and an unyielding blue-steel point upon a shaft, as though it were,
Noblest Blues in the battle line as though
in the deep gloom of night, the light of a shooting star.
Torches in the dark night

And a battalion whose mail-links ward off paired blows
And a band denying quarters, though the enemy be many
and repel the points of hurtling arrows,
Repulsing the stubborn fighters' thrusts

dark-armored and closely massed, as though its spears
A sheltering flock, their spears like a forest
in every mustered company were a thicket of reeds.
In each assembled group, on every hill

He shelters in the banner's shade, as though it were,
Seeking the shade of the banner as though
on the straight Khatti spear-shaft, an eagle's shadow.
Under cover of the valley's wing, a vulture

It appeased Abu Karb and wearied Tubba',
They surpassed Aboo Karb and wearied Tubba'
and its valor refused to yield to the Bedouin Arabs.
While their heroism exhausted the nomads

And preaching from our Lord which we offer

They were presented to us, and we longed for their recitation,
Presented before us, which we were keen to hear
after they had been presented to the factions:
After it was presented to the factions

A wisdom the sinners in their recklessness

Deemed difficult, but clear to the wise

Sakhina came to try to overcome her Lord,
It came hot, that it might overcome its Lord
so let the challenger of the All-Conquering surely be conquered!
So let the Overcomer of all be overcome!
