O eye, be generous, and do not be stingy

with your tears, truly, nor shed them sparingly,

for a chief whose death has crushed us,

noble in battle and in lineage,

    bold in attack, fully armed,

of noble repute and good mettle.

ʿUbayda is gone, and we no longer look to him

for good that befalls us, nor for ill.

And indeed he would defend, on the morning of battle,

the army's defenders with the cleaving sword.
