مَنْwho مُبْلغُwill convey to الأَنصارَthe Ansar عَنِّيfrom me آيَةًa message
رُسُلاًmessengers تَقُصُّrecounting عَلَيْهِمُto them التّبْيَانَاthe clear explanation
Who will convey a message from me to the Ansar—
Who will convey my message to the Helpers
Messengers setting forth a clear explanation to them,
With clear verses like messengers
رُسُلاًmessengers تُخبّركُمْinforming you بماof what أَوْلَيْتُمُyou have done
أنَّthat البَلاءَadversity يُكَشِّفُlays bare الإنْسَانَاa person
Messengers telling you what you have wrought:
Informing you of the loyalty you have shown me
That adversity lays a person bare;
That adversity reveals a man’s true nature
أَنْthat قَدْindeed فَعَلْتُمْyou have done فِعْلَةًa deed مُذْكُورَةًremembered
كَسَتِclothed you in الفُضُوحَdisgrace وأبْدَتِand revealed الشّنآناhatred
That you have indeed committed a memorable deed,
You have done a deed that will be spoken of
One that clothed you in disgrace and revealed hatred,
That uncovered scandal and enmity
بقُعُودِكُمْby your sitting idle فيin دَارِكُمْyour abode وأَمِيرُكُمْwhile your leader

By sitting in your own abode, while your leader—
While you sit idle in your homes as your leader
The grounds of his house were being filled with flames.
Burns, his house filled with raging fires
بَيْنَاwhile يُرَجِّيhe hoped for دَفْعَكُمْyour warding them off عَنْfrom دَارِهِhis house

While he hoped you would ward them off from his house,
He hoped you would defend his home
It was filled with smoldering fire and smoke.
As it was engulfed in blazing flames and smoke
حَتَّىuntil إذَاwhen خَلَصُواthey made their way إلىto أبْوَابِهِhis doors

Until, when they reached his doors,
Until they reached his very gates
They entered upon him, fasting and thirsty.
And entered upon him, fasting and parched
يُعْلُونَthey raised over قُلَّتَهَhis head السّيُوفَthe swords وأنتُمُwhile you
مُتَلَبّثُونَlingering مَكَانَكُمْin your places رِضْوَانَاwith approval
They raised swords over his head, while you
Brandishing swords over his battered form while you
Lingered where you were, in approval.
Blissfully lingered instead of coming to his aid
اللهُGod يَعْلَمُknows أنّنيthat I لَمْdid not أرْضَهُapprove of it
لَكُمُfor you صَنِيعاًas a deed يومَon the day ذاكَthat وَشَانَاand conduct
God knows that I did not approve of it
God knows I was not pleased with you
As your deed and conduct on that day.
That day or with your actions then
يَاO لَهْفَanguish of نَفْسِيmy soul إذْwhen يَقُولُhe says أَلاshall ... not? I see

Alas for my soul, when he said, “Will I not see
Oh how I yearn to see a band of Helpers
Some men of the Ansar to be my helpers?”
Come support me as loyal partisans
واللهِby God لوif شَهِدَhad been present ابنُson of قَيْسٍQays ثَابِتٌThabit
وَمَعَاشِرٌand companies of men كَانُواwho were لَهُto him إخْوانَاbrothers
By God, had Thabit ibn Qays been present,
By God, if the steadfast Ibn Qais had witnessed it
And companies of men who were his brothers,
Or the cohorts who were his brethren
وأَبُوand Abu دُجَانَةَDujanah وابنُand the son of أرقَمَArqam ثَابِتٌThabit

And Abu Dujanah, and Thabit ibn Arqam,
Abu Dujana and the unshaken Ibn Arqam
And the veteran of battles from Banu 'Ajlan,
The brother of Mashhad from the tribe of Ajlan
ورفَاعَةُand Rifa'ah العمريُّal-'Amri وابنُand the son of معاذِهِمْtheir Mu'adh
وأَخُوand the brother of مُعَاويَMu'awi لمdid not يَخَفْfear خذلانَاabandonment
And Rifa'ah al-'Amri, and the son of their Mu'adh,
Rafiah al-Umari, Ibn Mu’adh and his ilk
And Mu'awi's brother—he would not have feared abandonment.
Muawiya’s brother who feared no betrayal
قَوْمٌmen يَرَوْنَwho regard الحقَّwhat is right نَصْرَsupporting أَمِيرِهِمْtheir leader
وَيَرُونَand regard طَاعَةَobedience to أمْرِهِhis command إِيْمانَاas faith
Men who regard supporting their leader as right,
Men who see their leader’s victory as truth
And regard obedience to his command as faith.
And obedience to him as belief
وَقِوَامُand the mainstay of أَمْرِthe affairs of المُسْلِمينَthe Muslims إِمَامُهُمْtheir imam
يَزَعُhe restrains السّفِيهَthe fool ويَقْمَعُand suppresses العُدْوَانَاaggression
And the mainstay of the Muslims' affairs is their imam,
The Caliph is the pillar of the Muslim community
Who restrains the fool and suppresses aggression.
Subduing the foolish and quelling turmoil
فوَدَدْتُso I wished لوif only كُنْتُمْyou had بَذَلتُمْgiven عَهْدَكُمyour pledge
لَبَقِيthen would have remained أَمِيرُكُمُyour leader عَلَىupon مَاwhat كَانَاhe was
So I wished you had fulfilled your pledge;
I wish you had kept your oath to him
Your leader would have remained as he was.
So he could have remained as he was
وَكَرْرْتُمُand you had charged كَرَّthe charge of المُحَافِظِa steadfast defender إِنَّماonly
يَسْعَىstrives الحَلِيمُthe forbearing man لِمِثْلِهِfor one like him أَحْيَانَاat times
And charged as a steadfast defender charges; only
And you had protected him, for the wise
For one like him does the forbearing man sometimes strive.
Seek to aid men like themselves
فَمَنَعْتُمُوهُso you defended him أَوor قُتِلْتُمْyou were killed حَوْلَهُaround him
مُتَلَبّبينَclad in البِيضَhelmets والأبْدَانَاand coats of mail
Then you would have defended him, or been killed around him,
Either preventing his death or dying around him
Clad in helmets and coats of mail.
Wrapped in white, falling one by one
وَلَقَدْand indeed عَتبتُI found fault علىwith مَعَاشِرَgroups of men فِيكُمُamong you
يَوْمَon the day of الوَقِيعَةِthe assault أسْلَمُواthey abandoned عُثْمَانَاUthman
And I have indeed found fault with men among you
And I blamed the cohorts among you
Who abandoned Uthman on the day of the assault.
Who surrendered Usman on the day of Waqi’ah
إنْif يُتْركُواthey are left فَوْضَىunrestrained يَكُنْthere will be فيin دِينِهِمْtheir faith
أمراًa matter يُضَيّقُthat makes narrow عنهُمُfor them البُلْدَانَاthe lands
If they are left unrestrained, there will arise within their faith
If chaos ensued in their faith
A trouble that makes the lands too narrow for them.
That would constrict the very horizons
فلْيُعْلِيَنَّso may ... surely exalt اللهُGod كَعْبَthe standing of وَلِيِّهِHis ally
وَلْيَجْعَلَنَّand may He surely make عَدُوَّهُHis enemy الذّلاّنَاutterly abased
So may God surely exalt the standing of His ally,
May God elevate the fortunes of His Guardian
And surely bring His enemy low.
And humiliate his enemy evermore
إنّيindeed I رَأَيْتُsaw محمّداًMuhammad إِختَارَهُchose him
صِهراًas a kinsman by marriage وَكَانَand he was يَعُدُّهُcounting him خلصَانَاamong his intimates
Indeed, I saw Muhammad choose him
I saw Muhammad select him
As a kinsman by marriage, and he counted him among his intimates:
As a kinsman, counting him among the loyal

Pure in character, noble in lineage,
Singling him out from the best houses of Kindah
From the best of Khindif in rank and station.
For his competence and stature
عَرِفَتْacknowledged لَهُfor him عُلْيَاthe nobility of مَعَدٍّMa'add كُلُّهَاall of it

All the nobility of Ma'add acknowledged his
The highest houses of Ma’ad acknowledged him
Sovereignty and authority after the Prophet.
As ruler after the Prophet
مِنْfrom مَعْشَرٍa people لاnot يغدُرُونَthey act treacherously بِجَارِهِمْtoward their neighbor
كَانُواthey were بمكَّةَin Mecca يَرْتَعُونَliving in plenty زَمَانَاfor a time
From a people who do not betray their neighbor,
From a people who betray no neighbor
Who lived in plenty in Mecca for a time.
In the days they spent in Mecca
يُعطونَthey give to سَائِلَهُمْwhoever asks them وَيَأْمَنُand is safe جارُهُمْtheir neighbor

They give to whoever asks them, and their neighbor is safe
Giving to those who ask of them and securing
Among them; they slay armored warriors with spear-thrusts.
Every neighbor, forcefully repelling attacks
فَلَوَso if only أنَّكُمْthat you مَعَalongside نَصْرِكُمْyour support لنبيِّكُمْfor your Prophet
يَوْمَon the day of اللّقاءِthe encounter نَصَرْتُمُyou had supported عُثْمَانَاUthman
So if only, alongside your support for your Prophet,
If only you had supported your Prophet’s successor
You had supported Uthman on the day of the encounter!
By aiding Usman that fateful day
أَنْسِيتُمُhave you forgotten? عَهْدَthe charge of النّبيّthe Prophet إليكُمُto you
وَلَقَدْand indeed ألَظَّhe insisted وَوَكَّدَand confirmed الأَيْمانَاthe oaths
Have you forgotten the Prophet's charge to you,
Have you forgotten the pledge to you
Though he insisted and solemnly confirmed the oaths,
From the Prophet, binding though it was
بمنًىat Mina غَدَاةَon the morning when تَلاhe recited الصّحيفَةَthe document فِيكُمُamong you
فَأَهْجْتُمُthen you were roused وَقَبِلْتُمُand you accepted الأدْيَانَاthe creeds
At Mina, the morning he recited the document among you,
At Minna, when he recited the covenant to you
Then you were roused and accepted the creeds:
And you roared, embracing the faith
ألاّthat not تُوَلُواyou turn away مَاso long as تَغُوَّرَjourneys into the lowlands رَاكِبٌa rider

Not to turn away as long as a rider journeys into the lowlands.
Not to abandon the riders no matter how far they range
Death has brought low one loyal to his brothers.
Bringing shame to the protector of brethren
