    ولو شَهِدَةْ رَأَتْنَا صَابِرِينا

    And a woman asks what we encountered;

had she been present, she would have seen us steadfast.

We endured, seeing no equal to God,

through what befell us, placing our trust in Him.

    بِهِ نَعْلُو البَرِيَّة أجْمَعِينَا

    The Prophet was a faithful helper to us;

through him we rise above all creation.

We fight a people who did wrong and severed kinship ties,

and lay in wait in enmity.

We swiftly assail them when they advance against us,

with blows that give the headlong no respite.

You see us in ample, full-length coats of mail,

clad in them, like pools upon the open plain.

    بِهَا نَشْفِي مِرَاحَ الشّاغِبِينا

    And in our right hands are bright, light swords;

with them we cure the troublemakers' insolence.

At the gate of the two trenches, they seem like lions,

their interlocking claws guarding the lair:

our horsemen, when they ride out morning and evening

against the enemy, fierce-eyed and wholly devoted.

And the people of Mecca learned, when they marched,

and the factions that came banded together,

    that God has no partner,

and that God is the believers' protector.

So if you kill Sa'd in folly,

then God is the best of those with power.

He will admit him into pleasant gardens

that will be an abode for the righteous.

Just as He has already driven you back, a routed, scattered remnant,

with your rage, disgraced and thwarted.

Disgraced, you gained no good there,

    and you nearly perished

from a fierce wind that blew upon you,

so beneath it you were muffled up.
