ألاlisten! أَبْلِغَاtell, you two فِهْراًFihr علىdespite نَأْيِthe remoteness of دَارِهَاher dwelling
ألا أَبْلِغَا فِهْراً على نَأْيِ دَارِهَا
وعِنْدَهُمُand with them منof عِلْمِنَاknowledge of us اليومَtoday مَصْدقُconfirmation
وعِنْدَهُمُ من عِلْمِنَا اليومَ مَصْدقُ
Listen! You two, tell Fihr, though her dwelling is far away—
Convey to the tribe of Fihra in their distant abode,
and today they have proof of what is known of us—
That today we have knowledge to confirm theirs:
بأنّاthat we غَدَاةَon the morning of السَّفْحِthe slope منof بَطْنِthe valley of يَثْرِبٍYathrib
بأنّا غَدَاةَ السَّفْحِ من بَطْنِ يَثْرِبٍ
صَبَرْنَاwe stood firm وَرَايَاتُand the banners of المنيّةِdeath تخفقُflutter
صَبَرْنَا وَرَايَاتُ المنيّةِ تخفقُ
that on the morning at the slope in Yathrib's valley,
That at dawn on the slopes of the valley of Yathrib
we stood firm while the banners of death fluttered.
We were steadfast though death's banners did wave;
صَبَرْنَاwe stood firm لَهُمْagainst them والصّبْرُand steadfastness مناin us سَجِيَّةٌan innate trait
صَبَرْنَا لَهُمْ والصّبْرُ منا سَجِيَّةٌ
إذاwhen طَارَتtook flight الأَبْرَامُthe weaklings نَسْمُوwe rise ونَرتُقُand we mend breaches
إذا طَارَت الأَبْرَامُ نَسْمُو ونَرتُقُ
We stood firm against them, and steadfastness is our nature.
Steadfast we were towards them, and steadfastness was our wont
When the weaklings take flight, we rise and mend the breaches.
Whenever war-steeds careered, aloft would we soar.
علىfollowing عَادَةٍa custom تلكُمْthat جَرَيْنَاwe ran بِصَبْرِنَاwith our steadfastness
على عَادَةٍ تلكُمْ جَرَيْنَا بِصَبْرِنَا
وَقِدْماًand of old لدىat الغَايَاتِthe finishing posts نَجريwe race فَنَسْبِقُand so we outstrip
وَقِدْماً لدى الغَايَاتِ نَجري فَنَسْبِقُ
Following that custom, we ran our course with our steadfastness,
By this custom of ours we kept steadfast,
and of old, at the finishing posts, we would race and outstrip others.
And towards high goals would we run, outpacing all.
لناwe have حَوْمَةٌa battle-host لاnot تُسْتَطَاعُcan be overcome يَقُودُهَاhe leads it
لنا حَوْمَةٌ لا تُسْتَطَاعُ يَقُودُهَا
نَبيٌّa prophet أَتَىcame بالحَقِّwith the truth عَفٌّchaste مُصَدَّقُacknowledged as truthful
نَبيٌّ أَتَى بالحَقِّ عَفٌّ مُصَدَّقُ
Ours is a battle-host none can overcome, led
We have a leader whom none can withstand,
by a prophet who came with the truth, chaste and acknowledged as truthful.
A Prophet who came with the truth, noble and verified.
ألاlisten! هَلْhas? أَتَىreached أَفْنَاءَthe clans of فهرِFihr بنson of مَالكٍMalik
ألا هَلْ أَتَى أَفْنَاءَ فهرِ بن مَالكٍ
مقطّعُhacked apart أطرافٍlimbs وَهَامٌand skulls مفلّقُsplit open
مقطّعُ أطرافٍ وَهَامٌ مفلّقُ
Listen! Has news reached the clans of Fihr ibn Malik
Say, did the abodes of Fihra ibn Malik
of limbs hacked apart and skulls split open?
Witness fragments of corpses and skulls split asunder?
