Ask Quraysh about the morning by Uhud’s slope—
Ask Quraysh about the morning at the foot of Uhud:
what we encountered, and what they encountered in flight.
what we faced, and what they experienced in flight.

We were the lions; they were leopards when they advanced;
We were the lions, and they the leopards, when they advanced.
we paid no heed to clan or lineage.
We heeded neither clan nor ties of kinship.

How many a noble champion we left upon that field—
And how many a valiant chief we left there—
a defender of honor, noble in forebears and pedigree.
a guardian of honor, noble in ancestry and family repute.

Bold in advancing, firm of purpose, determined,
when hearts are trembling with terror.

He presses onward and urges us, with none disobeying,
He advances and urges us on, though we have not disobeyed.
as though he were the full moon, his nature unstamped by lies.
He is like the full moon; lying is not in his nature.

He appeared to us; we followed him, believing him true.
He appeared to us; so we followed him, believing him.
They called him a liar, and thus we became the most fortunate of the Arabs.
And he was called a liar; so we were the most fortunate of the Arabs.

They wheeled about, and so did we; they neither rallied nor returned,
They wheeled about, and we wheeled about; they neither came back nor returned.
while we battered them, never slackening in pursuit.
And we pursued them closely, sparing no effort in the chase.

They are not equal—how vast the difference between the two:
The two are not equal; far apart are their conditions:
the party of God, and the people of idolatry and false gods.
the party of God and the people of polytheism and idols.
