Indeed, it has flown to pieces in every direction—

the protection of those whom Abu Baraʾ sheltered.

So the likes of Musahhab and his father's sons

are beside al-Radh, on the two flanks of Sawaʾ.

Sons of Umm al-Banin, did you not hear

the plea of the one seeking help at evening,

and the raised voice of the caller for aid? Yes—but

you knew that he was steadfast in battle.

So Banu Kilab's bags are not empty—

nor are al-Qurataʾ—of reproach for broken faith.

O ʿAmir, ʿAmir of shameful deeds of old,

you have excelled neither in wisdom nor in nobility.

Have you broken faith with the Prophet—you who have long been

racing toward shameful deeds across the open country?

So you are not like the protector of Abu Duʾad's neighbor,

nor the Asadi, the protector of Abu al-ʿAlaʾ.

But your disgrace is a long-standing disease,

and the disease of treachery—know this—is the worst disease.
