فلَوْso, if حِلْتُمُyou intervened مِنْfrom دُونِهِbefore him لَمْnot يَزَلْcease لَكُمْfor you
يَدَthroughout الدَّهْرِall time عِزٌّglory لاnot يبوخُdies down ولاand not يسريpasses away
So, had you stood in his defense, you would have retained
Had you resolved without Him, time's hand for you
for all time a glory that neither dies down nor passes away.
Would always mighty be, unfailing, unrestrained,
وَلَمْand not تَقْعدُواyou sit idle والدّارُwhile the house دُخَانُهَاits smoke

And you would not have sat idle while the house's smoke
Nor would you dwell in a house with smoke-filled rooms
burned within it amid blazing fire and embers.
Ablaze with flaming fires and burning embers.
فَلَمْso, did not أَرَI see يوماًa day كانَwas أكثرَgreater ضَيْعَةًneglect
وَأَقْرَبَand closer منهُthan it للغِوَايَةِto waywardness والنُّكْرِand wrongdoing
For I have never seen a day of greater neglect,
Thus I have never seen a day of vainer waste,
or closer than it to waywardness and wrongdoing.
Nearer to going astray, denial and disbelief.
