لم يَغْذُهَا قدٌّ ولا نَصِيفُ

لم يَغْذُهَا قدٌّ ولا نَصِيفُ

لكِنْ غَذَاهَا الحَنظَلُ النّقِيفُ

لكِنْ غَذَاهَا الحَنظَلُ النّقِيفُ

Neither a skinful nor half a measure nourished her;

Rather, cracked colocynth nourished her,

ومذقَةٌ كَطُرَّةِ الخَنِيْفِ

ومذقَةٌ كَطُرَّةِ الخَنِيْفِ

تَنْبُتُ بَين الزَّرْبِ والكَنيفِ

تَنْبُتُ بَين الزَّرْبِ والكَنيفِ

And a draught of watered milk, like the fringe of coarse linen.

She grows between the sheepfold and the privy.
