قَضَيْنَاwe put an end to مِنْfrom تِهَامَةَTihamah كُلَّevery رَيْبٍcause for alarm
وخيبَرand Khaybar ثمَّthen أَجْمَمْنَاwe rested السّيُوفاthe swords
We put an end to every menace in Tihamah,
We have dispelled all doubt from Tihama,
And Khaybar; then we gave the swords their rest.
And Khaibar, then we sheathed our swords.
نُخَيّرُهَاwe give them a choice وَلَوْand if نَطَقَتْthey spoke لَقَالَتْthey would surely say

We give them a choice; and were they to speak,
We scrutinize them, and if they could speak, they would say
Their cutting edges would say: 'Daws or Thaqif.'
Their blades in Daws or Thaqif struck violently.
فَلَسْتُthen I am not لِحَاضنٍborn to a chaste woman أنْif لَمْnot تَرُوهَاyou see them

I am no son of a chaste woman if you do not see them
So I am no woman to nurse if you do not see them
In your dwelling's courtyard, coming from us by the thousand.
In the courtyard of your abode, thousands from us.
وَنَنْتَزِعُand we tear away العُروشَthe roofs بِبَطْنِin the hollow of وجٍّWajj

And we tear away the roofs in the hollow of Wajj,
And we snatch the citadels belly-first,
And your dwellings will stand empty of you.
And your homes will be empty of you by morning.

And our cavalry's vanguard will come upon you,
And there will come to you our horses quickly,
Leaving a dense host behind it.
Leaving behind them a dense gathering.

When they encamp in your courtyard, you will hear
When they descend upon your courtyard, you will hear
Its rumbling from the host encamped within it.
From it what its housing thundered loudly.

In their hands are keen-edged swords,
In their hands sharp straight swords
That send those who face their heat to their deaths.
That make the armored glint dangerously.

Like streaks of lightning, refined
Like carnelians whose purity
By India's smiths, not hammered thick.
Indian eyes have never seen the like of.

You would take the warriors' blood upon them,
You imagine the bravery of heroes in them
On the morning of the advance, for saffron mixed in liquid.
The morning of battle, charging violently.

Are they in earnest? Have they no sincere adviser
Do I not implore them, is there not among the tribes
Among the peoples, one who has known us well,
One who was intimate with us to advise them
يخبّرهُمْhe tells them بِأَنّاthat we قَدْalready جَمَعْنَاhave gathered

To inform them that we have gathered
Purebred horses and noble, choice mounts,
The noble horses and gallant knights?

And that we have come upon them with an advancing host
And that we have come upon them with a march
That surrounds their fortress wall in ranks?
That encircles the fence of their fortress in rows.

Their leader is the Prophet, and he was steadfast,
Their leader the Prophet, steadfast he was
Pure of heart, patient, and self-denying,
Pure of heart, patient, aloof.

Prudent in his affairs, possessed of judgment and knowledge,
Wise in command, judicious and learned
And forbearance; he was neither rash nor frivolous.
And forbearing, not frivolous or weak.
نُطِيعُwe obey نَبيَّنَاour Prophet وَنُطِيعُand we obey ربّاًa Lord

هُوَHe الرّحمنthe All-Merciful كانَhas been بِنَاtoward us رَؤُوفَاcompassionate
We obey our Prophet, and we obey a Lord:
We obey our Prophet and obey a Lord
He is the All-Merciful, compassionate toward us.
Who is Merciful and has been gentle with us.

So if you offer us peace, we will accept,
So if you incline toward peace we will accept
And make you a source of strength and sustenance for us.
And make you for us a pillar and ally.

And if you refuse, we will fight you and persevere,
And if you refuse we will battle you and be steadfast
And our resolve will be neither wavering nor weak.
And our matter will not tremble, frail.
نُجَالِدُwe fight مَاas long as بَقِينَاwe remain alive أَوor until تُنِيبُواyou turn back

We fight as long as we live, or until you turn
We will struggle as long as we last, or you relent
To Islam in fearful submission.
To Islam, submissively inclining.
نُجَاهِدُwe wage war لاnot نُبَاليwe care مَنْwhom لَقِينَاwe meet

We fight, heedless of whom we meet,
We will battle heedless of whom we meet
Whether we destroy inherited wealth or newly acquired wealth.
Whether we destroy the settlements or the peripheries.

And how many a people have mustered against us
And how many groups attacked us
Their own pure ancestral stock and their allies!
Obstinately, of them and their allies.
أَتُوناthey came to us لاnot يرونَthey see لَهُمْfor themselves كِفَاءًan equal

They came to us, seeing no equal to themselves,
They came to us seeing no match for themselves
So we cut off their ears and noses,
So we shattered the ears and the noses.

With every supple, polished Indian blade.
With every polished, pliant, sharpened blade
We drive them with those blades, driving them fiercely,
We drive them violently like cattle.

For the cause of God and Islam until
The religion stands upright, devoted to God alone,
The religion stands upright, tolerant and straight.

And al-Lat, al-Uzza, and Wudd are forgotten,
And Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Wadd are forgotten
And we strip them of necklaces and earrings.
And we take their necklaces and crescents.

So they came to submit and were at peace;
So they settled and grew calm,
And whoever does not defend himself is slain in humiliation.
And whoever does not resist is killed despondently.
