سمعت رميم الشعر في القبر هاتفا
I heard the remnants of poetry in the grave calling out
يا جهولا راح يهذي معلنا
O ignorant one who raves, declaring
يا لقومي من رداح
My people are in great distress
زرت الاحبة في الظلام فاوقدوا
I visited my loved ones in the dark, so they lit
جنة الدنيا كتاب
The world's paradise is a book
هذي الشوارع لا شوارع غيرها
These streets are no different streets
متى صح بين اثنين حب تأكدت
When love between two is made true
يا لأيام قطعنا في حمى
Oh days we spent intoxicated,
حتام يا غصن الأراك
Alas, O branch of the araks,
ما بال طرفك يسهر
Why are your eyes sleepless
سرق اللص وهو رب الدهاء

جمرات حبك قد خبون خمودا
The embers of your love have faded into oblivion
شعراء مصر لآلئ قد ضمها
Egypt's poets are pearls strung together,
تساقط دمع الطل فابتسم الزهر
The dew of dawn fell as the flowers smiled,
أنا شاعر والشعر بي
I am a poet and poetry is within me
فوق اللثام من الهوانم اعين
Behind the veil, a pair of eyes
تيسر من بعد العسير لقاؤنا
After hardship, our meeting was made easy
أنت تبقى إلى متى
How long will you remain
فيها تعاريج كحيات لوت
It has winding alleys like creeping snakes
إن كان قلبك هذا قد من حجر

نقلت إلى مصر روض الشآم
You transported the gardens of Damascus
إلى حماك لجأت اليوم يا سندي
To you I sought refuge today, O my support
سلوا ذوي الوجد عن فعل الفراق بهم

ما رأى البدر حبيبي مرة
My beloved never saw the full moon appear
أصبحت سلمى ملولا
Salma has become indifferent
لشعر العصر في الأفلاك برج
The poetry of the age has a constellation in the skies
جمعت بها الحكام كل مزية
They amassed in it every glory,
لما تجلى فوق كرسي خدها
When the beauty mark appeared above her cheek's throne
لي فاتن طلب المزيد من الهوى
I have a beloved who sought more love from me
الفضل والنبل والإقدام والباس
Generosity, nobility, valor, and might
هذا الصفاء مع النعيم تبارى
This serenity with bliss contended,
عطف الحبيب بساعة قد كهربت
With a tender moment my lover revived me
لا أحسب المرء في هذا الوجود سوى
I believe a man in this existence is only
سبلت فوق العارضين دموعا
You shed tears over the cheeks,
