1. I am a poet and poetry is within me
It has conveyed my wishes

2. And on the contrary I have found
No wellbeing in it

3. So I became passionate about it as if it
Were a mirror of evident beauty

4. And I held onto it and confessed to it
In times when I forget my dear ones

5. And I served it and gifted it
Every day a rhyme

6. From which I compose a poem
That tells of a singing meadow

7. With all types of flowing tears and shaking tremors now
It is five in six

8. Or seven in eight
So I walk with poetry in

9. These oppressive lands
It is inspired to me and often

10. After midnight
It is inspired while the eyes of every living being

11. In the city are sleeping
As if it were a visitor wandering

12. Among the distracted beautiful maidens
It keeps me up at night sitting

13. Between the tall and the low
His tambourine in his hand

14. And the servant lute
Until when my companions are deserted it is better and my beloved falls asleep

15. It ties its feet to me not
To mourn my feeble state

16. And I who since dusk used to sit in the corner
With their talk my sad soul distracted

17. Before midnight my eyes can’t find
Any sleep

18. And sleep is more essential to life
Than guests who come

19. So this wicked one wakes me
Or my rough nature

20. And if I disobey he throws ember
Of scorching fire

21. He has become tyrannical as if
An unjust king

22. So it becomes clear to me that
I have been afflicted with insomnia

23. So I get up frightened and my soul
To poetry obedient

24. As if the spirit of the poets
Stays up awake

25. Or they are bored of
Instructing the Bedouins

26. So imagination brings them to me
As if they are maidens

27. And I fall to the ground in awe
From the void of the abyss

28. They fill my head with clamour
And it becomes like raving

29. And the eye from prolonged wakefulness
Returns intoxicated and dim

30. Until the morning unravels
The curtain of a gloomy night

31. And bid me farewell and left me
Like a fleeting mummy

32. This has been my state since
My return like growing branches

33. And my face has remained luminous
Like the purity of a clear eye

34. So may the beautiful and sublime
Meanings appear to me

35. From a spring, school
Or song or singer

36. From everything under the sphere
And in the vacant sky

37. From everything languages have
Expressed past or surviving

38. Sometimes in secret at night
Other times openly in the morning

39. To return before dawn
To their homes content

40. Dressed in what imagination has woven
The garments of fancy resplendent

41. Ever remaining novel
Never to be seen as old

42. As for me the features of
My body will soon be healthy

43. What can I do if poetry does not
Cure me?
