أيا مصر كم فيك من جاهل

1. O Egypt, how many an ignorant one
Has become Westernized even in his steps

١. أيا مصر كم فيكِ من جاهلٍ
تفرنجَ حتى بخطواتهِ

2. He has denied the East though it's his origin
And craved the West and its afflictions

٢. لقد أنكر الشرقَ وهو ابنهُ
وبالغرب هام وآفاتهِ

3. He got used to lampooning his own people
Thus is one enslaved by his habits

٣. تعوَّد قدحاً على جنسهِ
كذا المرءُ عبدٌ لعاداتهِ

4. His hands strive towards his misery
And he seeks pride through his errors

٤. فتسعى يداهُ إلى بؤسهِ
ويطلب عزّاً بزلاتهِ

5. And destroys with vileness what the ancestors
Had built with love and their pleasures

٥. ويهدم باللؤم ما قد بنى ال
أوائلُ حبَّا بمرضاتهِ

6. He lost loyalty and sold dignity
And to the West displayed his follies

٦. أضاع الوفاءَ وباع الحيا
وللغرب أبدى حماقاتهِ

7. And exhibited vulgarity, pretending to be civilized
To make his gang of fools laugh

٧. وأبدى الرطانةَ مستعجماً
ليضحك رهط سفاهاتهِ

8. And was tempted to kill his noble fathers
To frolic fancifully in their haunts

٨. وأغرى بقتل أَبيهِ الأُسا
ةَ ليمرحَ لهواً بحاناتهِ

9. Wine is sparkling, faces are rosy, bodies are luscious
And chastity is allowed for his pleasure

٩. رحيقٌ صُراحٌ وجوهٌ صِبا
حٌ وعرضٌ مباحٌ للذَّاتهِ

10. Is this not odd that he who
Criticizes God and His signs?

١٠. أمن ذاك تعجبُ وهو الذي
يعيب على الله آياتهِ

11. Tomorrow he will think blasphemy a condition
For anyone who adds progress to his essence

١١. غدا يحسب الكفر شرطا لمن
اضاف الترقَي الى ذاتهِ

12. So O soul, be patient with what
The East is afflicted with from its elite

١٢. فيا نفس صبراً على ما مني
بهِ الشرق مِن جَورِ أسراتهِ

13. For today even its children have stung it
Leaving it prey for its neighbors

١٣. لقد عَقَّهُ اليومَ حتى بنوهُ
فخلوهُ طعمة جاراتهِ

14. Great souls, little minds
And a universe that confuses with its states

١٤. نفوسٌ كبارٌ عقولٌ صغارٌ
وكونٌ يُحار بحالاتهِ
