- أبا زنة لا زال جدك هابطاO Abu Zanna, may your fortune keep declining,
- أبا طاهر أنت عيب الزمانO Abu Tahir, you are the disgrace of the age,
- إباؤك للمجد أن يبتذلYour refusal to let glory be debased
- أبى الدهر إلا أن تقول وتفعلاTime insisted that you should speak and act,
- أجدر بمن عاداك أن يتذللاHow fitting that whoever opposes you should humble himself,
- إدراك وصفك ليس في الإمكانFully describing you is beyond possibility.
- أرقدت عن قلق الفؤاد مشوقهHave you slept, heedless of one restless and lovesick at heart,
- أرى الأرض تثني بالنبات على الحياI see the earth praising the rain through its vegetation;
- أرى الشرف الأعلى إليك مسلماI see the highest honor surrendered to you.
- أرى سفها ولو جاء العذولI deem it folly—even if the reproacher comes
- أرى لك يا خزرون لبنان في الورىI find, O Khazrun of Lebanon, that among humankind you have
- أسكان نعمان الأراك تيقنواO dwellers of Naʿmān of the arak trees, be certain
- أعد منعما بالعفو روحي إلى جسميReturn my soul appeased with pardon to my body
- النجم أقرب من مداك منالاThe star is easier to attain than your lofty reach;
- أما الزمان ففي يديك عنانهAs for time, its reins are in your hands,
- أما الزمان فقد ألزمته الجدداAs for time, you have obliged it to become new.
- أما الفراق فقد عاصيته فأبىAs for parting, I defied it, but it refused to yield;
- أما وبديع ما تأتي يميناIndeed, by the marvels of your deeds—an oath
- أما وسيفك في النفوس محكمIndeed, with your sword sovereign over souls,
- أما وظلك مما خفته وزرIndeed, your shade is a refuge from what I feared,
- أما ومساع لا نحيط لها عداThe favors you have shown are beyond all count,
- أما ومناقب عزت مراماIndeed, by virtues beyond attainment,
- أما وهوى عصيت له العواذلIndeed, by the love for which I defied the reproaching women,
- إن العلى المعيي الملوك طلابهاIndeed, lofty glory, whose pursuit exhausts kings—
- إن الفريق مذ استقل مغرباIndeed, the company, since it set off westward,
- إن لم أقل فيك ما يردي العدى كمداIf I do not say of you what kills your foes with grief,
- إني وإن كنت في الأقوال محتكماThough I am an arbiter in matters of speech,
- بإحرازك الفضل الذي بهر الخلقاBy attaining the excellence that dazzled creation,
- بالحول نلت ونال الناس بالحيلYou attained through strength, while others attained through stratagems.
- بجيد علاك مدحي كل آنUpon the neck of your exalted rank, my praise at every moment
- بسعدك دارت في السماء الكواكبThrough your good fortune the stars revolved in heaven,
- بقيت لذا العز الذي عز مطلباMay you endure for this glory, so hard to attain,
- بقيت ولا عزت عليك المطالبYou remained, though demands no longer impress you,
- بك اقتضى الدين دينا كان قد وجباThrough you, religion exacted a debt already due,
- بنصرك يدرك الفتح المبينThrough your aid, manifest victory is attained.
- تخلف عنه الصبر فيمن تخلفاPatience deserted him among those who stayed behind,
- تسد إذا حم الحمام المذاهبWhen death is decreed, all paths are barred.
- تفردت بالمجد دون الأممYou have excelled in glory over other nations,
- تمني العلى سهل ومنهجها وعرWishing for greatness is easy, but its path is rugged.
- حاشاك أن تسلب الأيام ما تهبFar be it from you to let time take away what you bestow,
- حمى النوم أجفان صب وصبSleep was barred from an ailing lover's eyelids
- خير الأنام لشرهم إحكاماThe best of humankind at dealing firmly with their worst
- دعوا القول فيمن جاد منا ومن ضناLeave off talk of who among us was generous and who was stingy.
- دل على المجد من إليه سعىHe guided whoever sought him to glory,
- دم بالصيام مهنأ ما داماMay you remain blessed in fasting as long as it lasts,
- ذد بالعزاء الهم عن طلباتهWith consolation, turn sorrow away from its demands.
- سبقت ففز بعظيم الخطرYou have led the way: win lofty eminence,
- سل المقادير ما أحببته تجبAsk the fates for what you desire; they will answer.
- سل عن فضائلك الزمان لتخبراAsk Time about your virtues, that you may be told:
- سما بك دهرك فليفتخرYour age has risen through you; let it boast
- شرف المعالي من يساجلك العلىSharaf al-Ma‘ali, who can rival you in eminence?
- شرف الملوك عدت معاليك المدىO honor of kings, your lofty deeds have surpassed all bounds.
- شفاء الهدى يا سيفه العضب أن تشفاGuidance is healed, O its keen sword, when you are healed,
- ضل من يستزير طيف الخيالAstray is he who summons the phantom of fancy to visit.
- طاول بقدرك من علا مقدارهVie, with your worth, with whoever stands high in stature;
- طاول بهمتك الزمان وحيداVie alone with Time through your resolve;
- طيف ألم قبيل منصدع الضياLean figure pained me before the breaking dawn
- ظلامة من أعدك للياليThe grievance of one who held you in reserve against the nights,
- ظن الأراك لدى واديه أظعاناHe mistook the arak grove beside its valley for departing caravans,
- عاذ بالصفح من أَحب البقاءHe who loved survival sought refuge in forgiveness
- عداكم هوى مذ شفنا ما تعداناLove has spared you; since it wasted us away, it has never spared us.
- علي لها أن أحفظ العهد والوداIt is my duty to her to keep faith and affection,
- عوضونا من السهاد الرقاداGive us sleep in place of sleeplessness,
- فت الورى فعلام ذا الإجهادYou have surpassed mankind—why, then, this exertion?
- فتية قد قطعوا الدهYoung men who have spent their days
- قد كفى الله وهو نعم الكافيGod has sufficed—and how well He suffices—
- قسما بسؤددك الذي لا يدعىI swear by your preeminence, which is no mere claim,
- قصر عن سعيك الألى جهدواThose who strove fell short of your endeavor.
- قفوا في القلى حيث انتهيتم تذمماHalt your hatred where you have reached, out of regard for honor,
- كذا في طلاب المجد فليسع من سعىThus let whoever strives pursue glory.
- كفى الدين عزا ما قضاه لك الدهرThe faith has glory enough in what time has ordained for you;
- كلانا إذا فكرت فيه على شفاBoth of us, if you reflect on it, stand on a brink,
- كن بعيدا إن شئت أو كن قريباBe far away if you wish, or be near;
- لا تجز في الذي بلغت الأنامDo not recompense mankind for what you have attained;
- لا تخش عدوى من أبحت ذمارهDo not fear the hostility of one whose honor you have made fair game;
- لا زال ملكك بالعلى مأهولاMay your realm remain peopled with lofty glory,
- لا زلت تعلو وإن حسادك إكتأبواMay you never cease to rise, even if your enviers grow dejected,
- لا فات ملكك ما أعيا به الطلبMay what has baffled pursuit never elude your rule,
- لصرف الليالي أن يصول ونخضعاThe vicissitudes of night may assail, and we must submit;
- لقد أدنت لك البلد السحيقاThey have indeed brought the far-off land near to you.
- لقد دفعنا إلى حالين لست أرىWe have indeed been driven into two conditions; I do not see
- لك السعي ما ينفك يخدمه السعدYours is the striving that good fortune never ceases to serve.
- لكم أن تجوروا معرِضين وتغضبواYou may be unjust, turn away, and grow angry;
- لله قدرك ما أجل وأشرفاGod bless your stature—how grand and noble it is!
- لو أن شامخ قدر دافع قدراIf lofty rank could ward off fate,
- لو لم يقد نحوك العدى الرغبHad hope not led your foes toward you,
- لي بامتداحك عن ذكر الهوى شغلPraising you keeps me occupied away from thoughts of love.
- ليهن العلى فرع غدوت له أصلاMay glory rejoice in a branch whose root you have become,
- ليهنك ما أنالتك الجدودMay what good fortune has granted you bring you joy,
- ليهنك ما شادت لك الهمم العلاMay what lofty aspirations have built for you bring you joy.
- ما أدرك الطلبات مثل مصممNone attains desired aims like a resolute man.
- ما الحسان فما لهن عهودAs for fair women, they keep no pledges.
- ما ذي المساعي الغر في قدر الورىThese glorious deeds are beyond the power of mankind;
- ما ضر طيفك والكرى لو زاراWhat harm would it do your dream-image and sleep to visit?
- ما عليها أوان تطوي الفيافيThey have, as they traverse the deserts,
- ما في المعالي علي منك يعتصمNo lofty height of glory can find refuge from you,
- ما في المعالي مطمع لسواكاThere is no hope of lofty honors for anyone but you.
- ما كان قبلك في الزمان الخاليBefore you, in bygone times, there was none
- ما لي مقال عن فعالك يعربI have no words that can express your deeds;
- ما مرتقاك على من رامه أممYour lofty height is no easy reach for anyone who seeks it.
- ما نرى للثناء عنك عدولاWe see no turning away from praising you;
- محض الإباء وسؤدد الآباءSheer proud defiance and the ancestral majesty of his forefathers—
- محل لهم بين النقا والأجارعA dwelling of theirs lies between the sand dune and the gravelly flats.
- محلك من محل الشمس أعلاYour station is higher than the station of the sun.
- مساعيك لا تحصى فتدرك بالعدYour endeavors cannot be counted and thus encompassed by enumeration.
- من عف عن ظلم العباد تورعاWhoever refrains from wronging others out of piety,
- هل العدل إلا دون ما أنت مظهرIs justice anything but less than what you display?
- هل بعد فتحك ذا لباغ مطمعAfter this conquest of yours, is there any hope for a rebel?
- هل غير ظلك للعفاة مقيلIs there a midday refuge for petitioners other than your shade?
- هل فوق مجدك غاية لطلابIs there any goal to seek above your glory?
- هل للأماني عن جنابك مدفعCan hopes be turned away from your presence?
- هل للخليط المستقل إيابWill the departing company ever return?
- هو ذاك ربع المالكية فاربعThere it is, al-Malikiyya's dwelling; halt.
- هواكم وإن لم تسعفونا ولم تجدواOur love for you, though you neither favor us nor give,
- وتربة المرحوم والحاء جيمBy the grave of the 'one shown mercy'—with ḥāʾ changed to jīm—
- ولي مولى أساء فلم أسمهI have a patron who wronged me, yet I did not brand him
- يا أيها الملك السامي الذي شرفتO exalted king, who has ennobled
- يا ديمتي نوء الثريا دوماO two steady rains of the Pleiades' season, endure,
- يا غابرا وجد الندىO lingerer, who found generosity
- يا للرجال لنظرة سفكت دماO men, help against a glance that shed blood,
- يطمع الناس في البقاء وتابىPeople hope to endure, but are denied
