It is my duty to her to keep faith and affection,
It is incumbent upon me to keep the promise and affection,
even if it brings nothing but estrangement and distance.
Even if it yields nothing but estrangement and distance.

How many a reproacher over her has advised forsaking her,
How many reproachers have hinted at their estrangement,
thus bringing to our ears an outrageous report.
Bringing news to my ears insistently.

Whenever he prolongs his reproach, I tell him, “Be gentle,”
When blame is prolonged, I say to him: be composed,
for no lover is he who does not deem his error right guidance.
For no lover sees his madness as sensible.

Love’s companion is one who counts its vexation contentment,
The mark of love is to count its displeasure as pleasure,
its turbidity clarity, and its colocynth honey.
And its bitterness as sweetness and its sore as honey.

Had longing and estrangement not tamed me for a time,
Had separation and estrangement not pleased me for a while,
I would not have accepted a promise, with the gift a scant trickle.
I would not have been content with promises and hopes.

She showed herself until I said, “Estrangement is not her way,”
She was obstinate until I said estrangement is not her religion,
then barred the way until I no longer found thirst strange.
And she was unyielding until I ceased to deny affection.

She departed, and her phantom spent the night defying her decree,
It became clear, so the phantom began to disobey her rule,
visiting me inadvertently and forsaking me deliberately.
Continuing to forget me, and estranging me deliberately.

When her glances began to seek the aid of coquetry and grace.

The glance of an eye wounds the heart, while its injury

From my earliest days, I have always held myself above
That my soul would seek its whims intensely.
letting my soul pursue its desires through toil.

For you are not the first desire to return to asceticism.
you are not the first desire to have become abstinence.

In the presence of a king whose deeds create glory.
with a king whose deeds create glory.

When he gives, rain cannot follow in the wake of his gifts;
And when he speaks, he fails neither his threats nor promises.
when he speaks, he breaks neither a threat nor a promise.

If the rain-bearing stars give freely in fertile times, he surpasses them;
And if they are miserly in the place, it has its compensation.
if they withhold in drought, he stands opposed to them.

And if asked for grace, he enriches and does not exceed.
if asked for favors, he enriches without keeping count.

And firm against the doubts of time when it is intense.
formidable against time’s misfortunes when they grow fierce.

Most affluent in shade, and most abundant in aid.
the broadest in sheltering shade, the most abundant in gifts.

He guides, though never guided, along the path of nobility;
Thus are the stars: floral, guiding without being guided.
so do the shining stars guide, and are not guided.
The progeny of the exalted dissolved the knots of glory with spears,

Scion of those who occupied glory’s summits with spears,
And left the path open for whoever hopes to join them.
and left the lowlands to those hoping to catch them.

Descriptions of their glory give speech to the tongue-tied,
That wrap themselves in trains to darken what was illuminated.
yet when they vie in boasting, they silence fierce disputants.

Sons of Salih, you have slain whomever you aimed at,
You were given succession after him as young men.
and revived whomever deliberately sought your kindness.
So you unfurled before him and behind him

Swords that vanquish enemies and straight undeviating spears.
and may calamity’s hands never gain hold of a limb of it.

For the needy they protect and the transgressor they shun.

It distinguishes between intimate and distant

No ostrich begot, nor good fortune brought into being.

Among those acts of kindness is an honor

O you who secured my gratitude with overflowing bounty,
As an auspicious, most fortunate son of his son's son.

He remains attributed with the name of his ancestor

and were kind to me, following your father without straying,
While his news is narrated and his well-being echoed.
and lavish in doing good without keeping count.

The rhymed prose of al-Tibr did not survive eras,

How much poetry has flowed that no lover authored,
فَعُوِّضتُso I was compensated مِنfor ذُلِّthe humiliation المَطامِعِof cravings عِزَّةًwith dignity

وَمِن خيفَةٍ أَمناً وَمِن عَدَمٍ وَجدا
Thus the humiliation of craving was replaced for me by dignity,
And how many swords were forged that knew no warfare!
fear by safety, and want by wealth,
Speech cannot reach what you actually do,

Even if it reached the utmost in describing your feats.
