Wishing for greatness is easy, but its path is rugged.

Treachery is its nature—unless you are the one who seeks it.

    فَلا حازِمٌ أَفضى إِلَيها وَلا غَمرُ

    It rejected everyone who exhausted his riding camels toward it;

Neither the resolute nor the inexperienced reached it.

Through daring and generosity you raised its bride-price,

And the suitors withdrew when the bride-price grew costly.

    وَمُذ جُدتَ لَم يَسنَح لِذي مِنَّةٍ ذِكرُ

    Since you became lord, aspirations have lifted no ambitious man;

And since you gave generously, no benefactor's name has come to mind.

You shamed those whose hearts yearned for it:

They have in it neither a young she-camel nor a young he-camel.

They once excused themselves by its paths being obscure

To them; since you made them plain, no excuse is evident.

You rose through judgment unaccompanied by personal whim,

And pure loyalty that treachery cannot approach,

And justice unchanged in your anger or contentment,

And faith alike in your private and public conduct.

Your tidings have covered the horizons—tidings which,

When spread in a town, leave perfume unsaleable.

Was the wind of David's son entrusted with carrying them?

Its morning journey is a month, and its evening journey a month.

He placed you above creation in worth and rank,

In faith and worldly life—He whose are creation and command.

And since I frightened Time, no calamity has assailed,

Nor have the days bloodied fang or claw.

    فَلا عَجَبٌ أَن طاوَعَتكَ وَلا نُكرُ

    From you the days gained everything that adorns them;

No wonder, then, that they obeyed you, and nothing strange.

Your palm's gifts have always brought wealth to the hopeful,

And pardon and forgiveness have always awaited the wrongdoer.

How many a tyrant you wished to sweep away,

Whom neither land nor sea could save!

What quality of glory has not been made yours

By your maiden ambition, though the envious chafe?

Reminders of favors and hurt stay far from your bounty,

While cheerfulness and smiles have never left it.

May kings be your ransom, whose supplicants' reward

From them is abundant scowling and sidelong looks.

    وَإِن سُحِروا بِالمَدحِ لَم يَنفُذِ السِحرُ

    When charmed with praise, the charms avail nothing;

When enchanted with flattery, the spell takes no effect.

Men of resolves that break no enemies,

And masters of wealth that ransoms no captive.

Your resolve refuses to have its place taken

By white Indian-forged swords or brown Khatt spears.

Were the forest lions frightened by its edge,

For all their might, neither wild-cow calf nor ibex kid would fear them.

Your people assailed the people who, whenever they wronged others,

Their might forbade any blood vengeance being exacted among them.

Zeal for valor has been followed by piety,

So they rose high as nomads and were gracious as townsfolk.

Lions, seasoned in preying upon the lions of adversity:

Treated kindly, they gladden; treated harshly, they harm.

Even if they had been obscurity's root and branch—

Far be it from them! How could the bright stars descend?—

You would have raised them where its Ka'b could not take

Iyad, and where Qasr did not reach through its Khalid.

    وَلا عَجَبٌ أَن يَفضُلَ اليَرمَعَ الدُرُّ

    You surpassed the noblest people in every form of lordliness;

No wonder that pearls surpass pebbles.

When Arabs other than you boast of generosity,

Their boast is what the cooking-pot gives the serving-bowl.

With you is the finest hospitality, and beyond it,

Even when means fall short, your boundless generosity.

If livestock perished through being driven off, nothing depleted

Your camel herds but gifts and slaughter.

Islam has indeed been strengthened, through you, by a clan

To whom shelter and support belonged already.

With every man whose neighbor is secure: he never drew his sword

Without the wolf and vulture being among his guests.

    وَإِن قارَعَ الرَعداءَ لَم يَنهَهُ الزَجرُ

    When he seeks the highest goals, slumber does not weaken him;

When he confronts raging war, warning does not deter him.

The Crown of the Chosen alone has acquired them:

Noble qualities beside which abundant description is scant.

He followed his clan in every glory to which they rose,

Then surpassed them as the full moon surpasses the stars.

He was not like morning preceded by darkness,

But a sun preceded by a dawn.

A magnanimous man who chokes his enviers at his gate

With things whose like thought has never plumbed.

His threat rules over the people of hypocrisy

With many times the force a vast army can enforce.

A king whose protection and giving continue,

So the unsuspecting fear nothing, and no supplicant is disappointed.

    وَإِن ظَلَّ يَهمي قيلَ بِالدَهرِ مُغتَرُّ

    When he keeps defending, they say: a tried old hand;

When he keeps raining gifts, they say: one deceived by Time.

It is merely a heedlessness that generosity has established

For a raid on his wealth that poetry has launched.

Drunk on the wine of noble deeds, he has not sobered

For an instant; without them he would not know drunkenness.

Let reprovers hope for no forgetting from him:

His severance and estrangement are for all but generosity.

How often those claiming to advise him have forbidden him,

Yet he went on, as though prohibition sounded like a command.

Every rain by whose water the soil revives

Is ransom for a cloud whose showers include raw gold.

He is screened out of reverence, yet before his justice

And overflowing bounty stands neither veil nor curtain.

Upon the water of beauty in his face floats

A modesty that an ignorant man mistook for pride.

    وَلا أَقلَعَت إِلّا بِهِ الحِجَجُ الغُبرُ

    Only for him have the proofs of greatness been established;

Only through him have the dust-dark years abated.

Nor, when boasting, is he a possessor of that lordliness

Which Zayd acknowledges and Amr denies.

O friend of the Commander of the Faithful, through you were dispelled

Darknesses that neither sun nor full moon dispelled.

You made us safe from the treachery of calamities that befell us,

So every calamity that befalls us became slight in our eyes.

From God we ask for you a lifespan

So long that no lifespan can match it.

We ask Him to inspire us to give Him thanks,

Whose pursuit is faith and whose neglect is unbelief.

Whoever denies what you bestow slanders God,

And whoever conceals it grins, baring unbelief's molar.

Our festivals have become indistinguishable ever since

Your radiant days came to resemble them in beauty.

Were it not for appointed dates known to everyone,

Neither Eid al-Adha nor Eid al-Fitr would be recognized among us.

    فَلَم يَفتَخِر إِلّا بِأَفعالِكَ الدَهرُ

    May He whose faith you champion spare you death;

Time has boasted only of your deeds.

May no swelling waters ebb from the sea of the two most eminent,

Its billows rising in flood, its bottom far away.

This age has gained from you and from them both

Virtues whose least no other age attained.

How many favors you bestowed, and I thanked you for them,

Then you bestowed another that no thanks could repay!

Though often I have sent forth, without holding back,

Necklaces of praise whose pearls are noble words.

Across the distance, Damascus sent to Egypt

Counterparts of what Darin and al-Shihr offer:

Verse like a meadow's dark green growth, caressed by dew—

Night dew that never ceased, with rain greeting it at dawn.

It flows lightly on mouths throughout the earth,

So drinking companions sing it and travelers chant it to their camels.

Its fragrance reveals it when it is recited:

What fragrance has musk whose scent does not spread?

It is unbecoming for me to boast of composing praises:

Your glory gains their smallest share, while mine is the abundance.

    وَحَظّي الغِنى وَالعِزُّ وَالجاهُ وَالفَخرُ

    Your share from us is what enrages the foes;

My share is wealth, might, standing, and glory.

Your qualities lie far beyond those who describe them,

And verse and prose fall short of grasping them.

Nor have my words, beside what you accomplish,

Any worth, though they surpass any speech that rivals them.

But my poetry is in love with your glad response,

And Egypt has never been far away for a lover.
