Through your good fortune the stars revolved in heaven,

and processions advanced to raise lofty glory.

Without you, no steed would have plunged into a perilous pass,

nor would those foxes have slain the lions.

Where brown spear-shafts met their breasts,

and white keen blades met throats and collarbones:

an embrace that uproots longing from its dwelling,

seeming to unite, though it severs and estranges.

On a day of blackened air, its furnace raging,

as though its pebbles melted from its blaze.

On that day you stained what was white in midmorning's radiance

with every whiteness that full-breasted maidens loathe.

    وَأَبهَجُهُ ما سُمتَهُ وَهوَ شائِبُ

    You restored the Indian blade's gray hair to blackness;

its greatest delight is what you imposed on it while it was gray.

Yet it is a stain that tells an inquirer

of what its impact achieved, though he was absent.

and where could an equal be found to stand in its stead?

keen swords is to cleave shoulders.

And many a massed host crept forward, the tongues of its spears

bearing a venomous sting, its choice steeds scorpions.

Within it a drinking companion offers a cup of death,

from which a drinker found his thirst quenched in doom.

Within it a hater embraced the one he hated,

as sweethearts embraced on the day of meeting.

Their music there is the clash of steel, and their wine

the people's blood, not what a milker draws from the vine.

whose tresses came from the forelocks of armored men.

The resolves of one who finds a way out whenever

his exits narrow—not trifling, though he plays.

And thrusts that shatter the brown Samhari spears,

    yet build and raise up glory;

and blows that demolish the white Mashrafi blades

with their force, pelting the enemy ranks like hail.

And a vast host with surging flanks, its ground

veiled by its dust from the sky's eye.

who thrusts for his peers and exchanges blows.

A youth in whom experience has refined the soul—

how, then, must it be when experience has polished it!

when a reckoner computes a thousand multiplied by a thousand.

He managed the affairs of kingship before coming of age,

while the household maidens had not yet removed his scented necklace.

That is a trait of the sons of al-Musayyab:

a child holds sway just as a gray-haired man has done.

A people whose lavish gifts were harshly judged

by their hands, when they did good, and by their largesse.

By directing their spear-thrusts they closed, in the heights of glory,

breaches that calamities had laid bare.

From his fire-bright judgment his high spears are leveled,

and from his penetrating resolve the cutting blades are drawn.

    فَحَيثُ تَراهُ ناقِماً فَهوَ واهِبُ

    He is the king overflowing with valor and bounty;

wherever you see him avenging, he is also bestowing.

He charges even if the stars were battalions,

and gives while drought's hand tugs away the veil.

And you, whenever evil openly declared its name,

and tresses sought refuge at the necks of fortresses,

made the Mashrafi sword's edge your companion:

truly, what an excellent companion it is!

Faithful when a brother betrays, and a defender

when the warrior swerves from repelling a calamity.

And when a people refused any mount but rebellion,

whose rider is bound for abasement and humiliation,

you closed upon them every gate and breach

through which they expected success, though success was far away.

    وَما يَستَوي المَغلوبُ وَالمُتَغالِبُ

    You gave them respite until they surely thought you powerless;

yet the vanquished and the one striving to prevail are not alike.

their promise true in his fancy, though it is false.

Your resolve cuts through when keen swords recoil,

and your judgment pierces when the air grows dark.

Yet they belong to a stock of Amir,

which gains from you unassailable might and protection.

tending it is a duty of religion and reason.

    فَفيهِم قُوىً تَعيا بِهِنَّ الضَرائِبُ

    So strike calamity with them, not strike them with it;

for they have strengths against which blows fail.

And when you left al-Sham—far be it from you to be seen

forsaking it, or your judgment turning away from it—

may no desolation befall it to shake it

from security or make the neighboring resident uneasy.

And when it had ailed before, there was no healer

for it but you, O you whom excellence accompanies.

    وَلولاكَ يَوماً ما اِحتَمَى فيهِ جانِبُ

    You spread over it the shade of your might, and it found shelter;

without you, no part of it would have been secure for a single day.

it had become a place where fear trailed its skirts.

when its nails and claws had already sunk in.

They sought refuge in your might, the most impregnable shelter,

and made for your rain, pouring forth goodness.

You left them the judgment that clothed them in humiliation,

and took refuge in a judgment untouched by flaws.

before whose way of pardon all other ways fade.

a noble, powerful man with a side disposed to favor.

and shows forbearance when forbearance has fled.

who does wrong and forgets what consequences bring.

He disciplined them with pardon, and pardon is his whip:

through it, every noble man is taught lessons in conduct.
