ذُدrepel بِالعَزاءِwith consolation الهَمَّsorrow عَنfrom طَلِباتِهِits demands
لاdo not تُسخِطَنَّever anger اللَهَGod فيin مَرضاتِهِits satisfaction
With consolation, turn sorrow away from its demands.
Console sorrow for its wishes with consolation
Do not ever anger God by appeasing it.
Do not anger Allah in His pleasures
لَكَfor you مِنfrom سَدادِكَyour sound judgment مُخبِرٌan informer بَلrather مُذكِرٌa reminder
أَنَّthat الزَمانَTime جَرىhas run عَلىalong عاداتِهِits customary ways
Your own sound judgment informs you—rather, reminds you—
You have from your righteousness an advisor, nay, a reminder
that Time has followed its customary ways.
That time has passed according to its habits
أَثكَلتَهُyou bereaved it أَحداثَهُits misfortunes وَخُطوبَهُand its calamities
فَاِصبِرso be patient لَهُwith it إِنif نالَit exacted بَعضَsome of تِراتِهِits claims for vengeance
You bereaved it of its misfortunes and calamities;
It burdened him with its events and calamities
so bear with it if it exacts some of its vengeance.
So be patient with it if he obtained some of its remains
صَدَعَit shattered القُلوبَhearts بِماwith what أَتىit did مُستَيقِناًcertain

أَنthat لاnot يُذَمَّit be blamed وَأَنتَand you مِنamong حَسَناتِهِits blessings
It shattered hearts with what it did, certain
It cracked the hearts with what came, assured
that it would not be blamed, with you among its blessings.
That it would not be blamed while you are among its virtues
إِنَّindeed الَّذيthe one who عَمَّencompassed الأَنامَmankind مُصابُهُthe loss of him
وَتَشَعَّبَتand splintered شُعَبُthe branches of المُنىhopes بِوفاتِهِat his death
Indeed, that man's loss afflicted all mankind,
Indeed, the one whose affliction has spread among the people
and his death splintered the branches of hope.
And the paths of death have branched with his passing
أَمَلواthey hoped شَتاتَthe scattering of الشَملِthe company خُيِّبَwas dashed ظَنُّهُمtheir expectation
أَنّىhow وَقَدand already مُلِّكتَyou were empowered جَمعَthe gathering of شَتاتِهِits scattered parts
They hoped the united company would scatter; their expectations were dashed.
They hoped to reunite the dispersed, their assumption failed
How could that be, when you were empowered to gather its scattered parts?
How, when you have been made master of gathering its pieces?
لَمّاwhen رَأَىhe saw أَنَّthat الشَبيبَةَyouth لِلعُلىfor glory
وَزَرٌa refuge وَبانَand became evident الضَعفُweakness فيin حَرَكاتِهِhis movements
When he saw that, for glory, youth was
When he saw that the youth are a burden for the exalted
a refuge, and weakness showed in his movements,
And weakness appeared in his movements
وَلّاكَhe placed you in charge مِنهاof it ماwhat تَوَلّىhe held authority over بُرهَةًfor a time
وَفَدىand ransomed حَياتَكَyour life راضِياًwillingly بِحَياتِهِwith his life
he entrusted you with the part of it he had held for a time,
He spared you from it for a respite
and willingly ransomed your life with his own.
And ransomed your life, satisfied with his own
فَلِذاكَfor that reason لاقىhe met يَومَهُhis final day مُستَبشِراًrejoicing
حَتّىuntil ظَنَنّاwe thought الَموتَDeath بَعدَafter عُفاتِهِhis petitioners
For that reason he met his final day rejoicing,
Thus he met his day cheerfully
until we thought Death followed his petitioners.
Until we thought death was pleasant after its gentleness
وَقَضىand he died عَليماًknowing أَنthat تَقومَyou would stand مَقامَهُhis place
بَعدَafter الفِراقِthe parting فَلَمso he did not يَفُهutter بِوصاتِهِhis final instructions
And he died knowing you would take his place
And he knew well that you would take his place
after the parting, so he voiced no final instructions.
After parting, so he did not understand his commandments
مُلّيتَmay you long enjoy ماwhat وِرِّثتَهُyou were bequeathed it مِنof عِزِّهِhis honor
وَوُقيتَand may you be protected بِالمَسموعِby what was heard مِنof دَعَواتِهِhis prayers
May you long enjoy what you inherited of his honor,
You have been endowed with the honor he inherited
and be protected by those prayers of his that were heard.
And protected by the supplications heard from his prayers
فَلَقَدfor indeed مَضىhe departed تَرجوhoped المَمالِكُthe kingdoms رَدَّهُto turn him back
فَتَسومُهُso they made him offers وَتَخافُand feared مِنof سَطَواتِهِhis onslaughts
For he departed while kingdoms hoped to turn him back,
Indeed, he passed away while kingdoms hoped for his return
so they made him offers, yet feared his onslaughts.
So they would appease him and fear his might
فَبَكاهُso it mourned him ثَغرٌa frontier town كانَhe was عِصمَةَthe safeguard of أَهلِهِits people

So a frontier town mourned him: he had been its people's safeguard,
The lips that were protection for his family wept for him
the refuge of those who sought it, and the glory of its governors.
As well as the refuge of his seeker, his honor and governance
أَجناهُmay He let him reap رَبُّthe Lord of العَرشِthe Throne غَرسَthe planting of فَعالِهِhis deeds
وَقَضىand may He decree لَهُfor him بِالخُلدِwith eternal life فيin جَنّاتِهِHis gardens
May the Lord of the Throne let him reap the harvest of his deeds,
The Lord of the Throne spared him, growing his deeds
and decree eternal life for him in His gardens.
And destined for him eternity in His Gardens
بِالرِفقِwith gentleness أَدرَكَhe attained وادِعاًat ease ماwhat لَمdid not يَنَلattain

With gentleness, at ease, he gained what was not won by
With gentleness, he attained while bidding farewell what he did not get
the proudest of kings with his bay steeds and warriors.
He softened the harshest kings with his silence and suppressions
حَتّىuntil لَخِلناهُwe surely thought him نَبِيّاًa prophet مُرسَلاًsent forth
وَمَحاسِنُand the virtues of الأَخلاقِcharacter مِنamong آياتِهِhis signs
Until we truly thought him a prophet sent forth,
Until we would think him a prophet sent
with the virtues of his character among his signs.
And the beauty of manners among his signs
فَاِملِكso win over بِماwith what مَلَكَhe won القُلوبَhearts مُكَذِّباًproving wrong

مَنwhoever ظَنَّthought أَنَّthat مَماتَهاtheir death بِمَماتِهِwith his death
So win hearts with what won them for him, proving wrong
So possess what he possessed of hearts, belying
whoever thought their death came with his death.
Whoever thought their deaths were with his own passing
ماليwhat is wrong with me? ذَلِلتُI abased myself مُنَبِّهاًrousing ذاone possessed of يَقظَةٍwakefulness

يَأتيhe performs مِنَof الإِحسانِgood ماwhat لَمdid not آتِهِI perform it
Why have I abased myself, rousing one already wakeful,
Why have I, worthless, advised one of vigilance
who does good deeds I have never done?
Who comes with benevolence I did not bring?
أَموالُهُhis wealth مَرفوضَةٌscattered كَعُداتِهِlike his enemies

وَصِلاتُهُand his gifts مَفرودَةٌspread out كَصَلاتِهِlike his prayer
His wealth is scattered, like his enemies,
His money is refused like his belongings
and his gifts are spread out, like his prayer.
And his prayers discarded like his worship
وَإِذاand when أَزارَhe makes visit الطِرسَthe parchment نِقسَthe ink of دَواتِهِhis inkwell

أَيقَنتَyou become certain أَنَّthat الفَضلَexcellence مِنamong أَدَواتِهِhis tools
And when he brings his inkwell's ink to visit the parchment,
And if he dons fine garments, he ruins their splendor
you are certain that excellence is among his tools.
You would know virtue is not among his tools
مازالَhas never ceased يَثنيhe turns back الدَهرَTime عَنfrom عَزَماتِهِits resolves

فَيَفُلُّهاso he blunts them وَيَجودُand gives generously فيduring أَزَماتِهِits crises
He has always turned Time back from its resolves,
Time kept foiling his resolves
thus blunting them, and giving generously amid its crises.
So he fails them and is generous in his crises
تُمسيare at evening كِرامُthe noble ones of العَصرِthe age بَعضَsome of ضُيوفِهِhis guests

At evening, the nobles of the age are among his guests,
The dignitaries of the time become some of his guests
and by night doing good is among his passions.
And acts of good are from his nightly devotions
وَأَسَدُّand the wisest of مَنthose who أَسدىbestowed يَداًa favor مَأثورَةًmemorable

And the wisest giver of a memorable favor
The most generous is one who gave a documented hand
is he who entrusts kindness to those he trusts.
Who entrusted kindness with his trusted ones

Patience, Jalal al-Mulk! You will praise the outcome of what
Patience, pride of the kingdom, praise the absence of what
you have been granted; patience is one of its tools.
You were empowered with, for patience is among its tools
لاdo not تُشعِرَنَّlet know الدَهرَTime أَنَّكَthat you جازِعٌdistraught

Do not let Time know that you are distraught
Do not let time know you are shaken
at what it does, lest it persist in its betrayals.
By its deeds, so it dares in its betrayals
فَلَأَنتَfor you indeed مَجدُthe glory of مُلوكِthe kings of دَهرِكَyour age فَليَعُدso let him retract
عَنfrom قَولِهِhis words مَنwhoever قالَsaid مَجدُthe glory of قُضاتِهِits judges
For you are truly the glory of your age's kings; let him retract
For you are the glory of the kings of your time, so let
his words, whoever called you the glory of its judges.
Who said the glory of its judges turn from his words
وَلَقَدand indeed عَلِمناwe know أَنَّthat بَينَكُمُamong you الَّذيthe one who

And we know full well that among you is the one
And we knew that the one between you, whom
from whose chambers lofty glory never departs.
The exalted do not travel from his chambers

This speech has reached you from me, offering consolation,
My words have come to you consoling
rather, seeking pardon for its slips.
Rather, hoping to overlook its slips

An utterance born of illness and grievous loss;
A saying came from illness and grief
so accept it, veiled despite its flaws.
So accept it, overlooking its defects
