Can hopes be turned away from your presence?

Or have they a watering place anywhere short of your door?

you understood the words of praisers, while they did not.

their encampment, except in your shade, is barren ground.

and grazed the meadows of glory, well guarded though it was.

it would have known you braver than 'Utaybah.

mankind slept, while its master never slumbered.

on a morning of terror they cut what cannot be cut!

on the day of battle, the bareheaded and the helmeted.

And lances that, even planted in their rests, terrify foes

with dread—what, then, must they think when leveled?

They stayed in their dwellings, content with rattlings

that can be heard but do no good.

yet shading the rain of a cloud that never ceases pouring.

it appears, and at others wraps itself in dust.

and spreads wide again when Dhuka' appears.

yet it rises above its full moon.

by Kisra of the kings, nor ever seen by Tubba'.

no one would have told the Fihri, 'You are Mujamma', the Gatherer.'

And bands who filled the Euphrates with ships

when the widest open land grew too cramped for them,

where deserts could contain their multitude

only as a brimful vessel contains its fill.

two mingled kinds, Arabs and non-Arabs, who so often

were summoned to avert calamities and hastened forward.

Bands differing in tongues and origins,

yet alike in the blades they draw and the armor they don.

whose dissent brought disobedience to the round-bellied, bald-fronted one.

from a ruse in which Qur'an copies are raised.

would be useless once you had killed its people.

and the reins of those who refused submission became pliant.
