Ask the fates for what you desire; they will answer.
Ask destiny for what you desire, it will answer.
For they have no wish other than what you desire.
It has nothing but what it wishes from the Lord.

And seek with these blades whatever is hard to attain.
And with this zeal, seek what is hard to attain,
For none on earth can turn you from your quest.
None on earth can divert you from seeking.

How could the kings of earth defy a man of lofty aims,
How can the kings of earth with ambitions
Whose decrees hold sway among the seven bright stars?
Disobey laws whose domains encompass the seven planets.

They were terrified, yet neither repelled oppression nor came close
They raced but neither warded off injustice nor troubles,
To lifting even some of the afflictions you dispelled.
Nor relieved any of the troubles you relieved.

They towered in words, but their deeds fell short.
Long were their claims yet short were their actions,
And black calamities will never be frightened by speeches.
Serious perils cannot be remedied by words.

They sought glory by branching paths,
They tried attaining glory through many paths
While you reached it by a path without a branch.
While you came to it through a smooth untrodden path.

Let people not be dazzled by the honor bestowed on you;
The nobility you attained does not bewilder people,
For whoever strives as you did claims the victor's reed.
Whoever sought as you did, ruled over the staff.

Valor with which you guard the foreign stranger,
A courage that protects a stranger or foreigner through it
As you ward harm from your unrelated neighbor.
As the harm is warded off a neighbour or relative.

And an asker whose plenty has dwindled like one asking,
In it this morning, and the far-off like the near.
In the early morn and nightfall like one drawing near.

So is fire useful and harmful,
Its light is sought out, its flame feared.
Feared is its light, blazing are its flames.

And a meekness that fate always prevents
By admirable earnestness from shameful frivolity.
Commendable is serious work unlike frivolous play.

None but you is seen when one boasts
Appealing one day to his noble forefathers.
Making fathers’ glories a thing of the past.

So rise above mankind: others are questioned about a lineage
The doer of the world, not you, is questioned about lineage
Far removed; the distinction bestowed on you is enough.
Sufficient a lineage is what you were endowed with.

You are one who elevates the nobility, your service
And affiliation with him is the noblest lineage.
And affiliation with you are the noblest of lineages.

An intuitive mind does not overlook your lineage
When bounty and battle tell you, 'Declare your lineage.'
When omnipresent fame says to you: “claim lineage!”

You built glory for non Arabs conveying them
To the glory God's Messenger built for the Arabs.
Glory built by Allah’s messenger for Arabs.

Indeed, al-Hakim al-Mansur protected his realm
The Caliph al-Mansur protected his state
By saying, 'Choose the finest horsemen and select.'
By saying: select horsemen and men of merit.

Then his son unsheathed you as a sword when defiance arose
His son, Sword of Time, later chose you
Among his enemies; through you he hurled ruin upon them.
To smite enemies raging in transgression.

Then, when you excelled, his grandson said, 'Take strength,
So when you grew up, son of his son said: my state, depend
O my realm, from my grandfather's champion and my father's sword.'
On grandfather’s knight and father’s sword.

As the equal of your intense troubles and woes.

From your hand's bounty a rope that never breaks.
To the rope of your generosity, firm and unfailing.

You gave it, after being content with water and plants,
After they had been content with water and grass.
Money to drink and heights to graze.

What you had seized at the furthest ends of the bow.

The man who always trotted along deceit's path.
One who always walked the path of precision and judgment.

In the shade of the most wondrous – if one asks it will give,
He gives; and if he enters battle, he does not fear.
If one comes in contact with raging, it will not rage.

Firm is determination when it aims arrows, it pours.

The peninsula is a door whose breadth you expand

Shaking while naught remains but the opening so wait for it.

The herald from Baghdad will arrive close behind.
The herald from Baghdad will bring tidings.

Safety from such resolve is not found in flight.
Safety from one with firm purpose is not through escaping.

They attacked, so once they descended at the banks, the banks
From war's fury by the plunder they feared.
Pulled them away from the form of war they had feared.

More worthy to veil their defects than veils.

Water that mimicked their dust on the dusty galloping-ground.
Water told of their galloping in dirt.

Birds whose watering place is blood of drinking beasts.

And let them avoid the grip of a formidable man whose assault's edge
And avoid the might of one whose might
Swept away those who resisted it, their crosses overturned.
Is mightiest against one whose determination reversed.

A star, once ablaze, was extinguished by your sword;
A star waned after the firewood when your sword
Thus you gained what was stored for you, O faith of the worlds.
Kindled possessor of world’s faith.
وَأَينَand where مِنكَbeside you اِبنُIbn حَمدانَHamdan المُرَوِّعُهُمwho terrifies them

And where does Ibn Hamdan, who terrifies them, stand beside you?
Where is Ibn Hamdan frightening them
The governor of Aleppo is among your mamluks,
Or your mamluks, the Governor of Aleppo?!
مِنَamong الأُلىthose who هَذَّبَتهُمrefined them ذيthese العُلىlofty virtues فَحَوَواand they attained

Among those whom these lofty virtues refined, so they gained
Refined by the Most High, they obtained a share
A share of generosity, daring, and refinement.
Of generosity, courage, and proper behaviour.
هُمُthey المَواليthe lords وَإِنand though خَوَّلتَهُمyou made them خَوَلاًservants

They are lords, though you have made them servants;
They are loyal even if you delegate authority,
What harm came to Joseph from being sold among slaves brought to market?
No harm ever came from Joseph being sold into slavery.
وَلَّيتَهُمyou entrusted them with ماwhat تَوَلَّتهُgoverned it المُلوكُthe kings لَقَدindeed

You entrusted them with what kings had governed; indeed,
You made them what kings have delegated
Your determination spurned the ranks those kings attained.
Your determination refused what they attained in positions.
كَأَنَّas though مَجدَكَyour glory وَهوَwhile it is الدَهرَforever فيin صُعُدٍascent

It is as though your glory, though forever ascending,
As if your glory, while time ascended,
From its sheer speed were plunging down a slope.
From its swiftness fell into a slippery place.
مَلَكتَناyou ruled us مُلكَwith the rule of مَولىًa lord عَزَّmighty مَقدِرَةًin power
وَحُطتَناand you protected us حانِياًtenderly كَالوالِدِlike a father الحَدِبِcaring
You ruled us as a lord mighty in power,
We possessed, Master, glory of a Master mighty in decree
And guarded us tenderly, like a caring father.
We were brought low, as humble as an affectionate father.
لاlet not يَرضَaccept عَزمُكَyour resolve شَطرَhalf of الأَرضِthe earth مَملَكَةًas a kingdom
فَشَطرُهاfor half of it فيin ضَمانِthe guarantee of السُمرِthe brown spears وَالقُضُبِand the keen swords
Let your resolve not accept half the earth as a kingdom,
Your determination is not pleased with half a kingdom ruled
For half of it is secured by brown spears and keen swords.
Half is guaranteed by red and yellow arrows.
وَلاand do not تُسالِمmake peace with عَدُوّاًan enemy أَنتَyou قاهِرُهُhis conqueror
قَدalready أَمكَنَتكَhave become accessible to you كُؤوسُthe cups of الحَمدِpraise فَاِنتَخِبِso choose
And make no peace with an enemy you overpower;
Nor will you make peace with a foe you subdue
The cups of praise are within your grasp, so choose.
Cups of praise enabled you so select!
فَكُلُّfor every مَلكٍking دَعاكَcalled to you اليَومَtoday مِنfrom بُعُدٍafar
فِإِنَّهُthen indeed he فيin غَدٍtomorrow يَدعوكَcalls to you مِنfrom كَثَبِnearby
For every king who calls to you today from afar
Thus every king inviting you today from afar
Will call to you tomorrow from close at hand.
Will tomorrow invite you from nearby.
هَواكَlove for you أَذهَلَنيmade me forget عَنabout ذِكرِmentioning كُلِّevery هَوىًother love
فَماso not أَجيءُI come بِشِعرٍwith poetry غَيرِnot مُقتَضَبِwithout a prelude
Love for you has made me forget every other love,
Your zeal has distracted me from mentioning any passion
So I bring only poetry without a prelude.
I cannot come with poetry that lacks harmony or balance.
أَمَّنتَنيyou secured me بِالعَطاءِwith gifts الغَمرِabundant مِنfrom عَدَمٍpoverty
وَبِالمَساعيand through deeds إِذاwhen أَثنَيتُI praised مِنfrom كَذِبِfalsehood
You secured me against poverty with abundant gifts,
You secured me with copious favour from nothingness
And, through your deeds, against falsehood when I praise.
And interceding honour for me despite deficient lineages.
وَقَدand indeed شَفَعتَyou coupled الغِنىwealth ليfor me بِالعُلىwith eminence كَرَماًgenerously
فَصِرتُso I became ذاone possessing نَسَبٍa lineage فيin المَجدِglory وَالنَسَبِand ancestry
In generosity you joined wealth for me with high rank,
So I gained through you lineage and glory
So I acquired a lineage in glory and in ancestry.
Which burden should I carry - your creating or your making me?
فَدُلَّنيso show me أَيَّماwhich of الثِقلَينِthe two burdens أَحمِلُهُI bear it
ثِقلِthe weight of اِصطِناعِكَyour patronage ليfor me أَمor ثِقلِthe weight of صُنعِكَyour beneficence بيtoward me
Then show me which of the two burdens I bear:
My strength lied in that poetry is a reason for me
The weight of your patronage of me, or the weight of your favors to me.
And this, providing without reason, weights heavy on me.
قَدindeed شَدَّstrengthened أَزرِيَmy back أَنَّthat الشِعرَpoetry ليfor me سَبَبٌa claim
وَأَنَّand that هَذاthis man الَّذيthe one who يُغنيgrants wealth بِلاwithout سَبَبِa claim
It has strengthened my back that poetry gives me a claim,
If my ideas do not fail me in praise
And that this man grants wealth without a claim.
It may entice the distant with yearning.
إِنif لَمdo not تَغُصdive لِيَfor me أَفكاريmy thoughts عَلىfor مِدَحٍpraises

If my thoughts do not dive for me to find praises
Never have I reached the extent of my life’s hope
That move one far from rapture to rapture,
Or gained pardon on the day I return.
فَلاthen may I not بَلَغتُattain مَدىthroughout مَحيايَmy lifetime أَيسَرَthe least of ماwhat

Then may I never, throughout my life, attain the least of what
The fast has gone and no reward remains for one who discards
I hope for, nor gain pardon on the day of my return.
Nor sin remains for one anticipating.
مَضىhas passed الصِيامُthe fast وَماand no أَجرٌreward بِمُطَّرَحٍis discarded

فيماin what فَعَلتَyou did وَلاand no وِزرٌsin بِمُحتَقَبِis carried as a burden
The fast has passed, and no reward is cast away
The feast has returned so deliver what came and went
In what you did, nor any burden of sin incurred.
Revered by fate, protected from flaws.
وَعاوَدَand has returned العيدُthe feast فاِّسلَمso stay safe ماas long as أَتىit comes وَمَضىand passes
مُعَظَّمَhonored in القَدرِstanding مَحروساًguarded مِنَfrom النُوَبِcalamities
The feast has returned; stay safe as long as it comes and goes,
As for pilgrims, you clarified their path
Honored in standing, guarded against calamities.
Between those with homelands, faiths or Expatriates.
أَمّاas for الحَجيجُthe pilgrims فَقَدthen indeed أَوضَحتَyou made clear نَهجَهُمُtheir route

As for the pilgrims, you have made their road clear,
The Creator will not waste their efforts
For those with nearby homes and those far from home alike.
You have heard the nation’s prayer from all places.
وَلاand may not يُخيبُdisappoint إِلَهُthe God of الخَلقِcreation سَعيَهُمُtheir striving

وَقَدand indeed سَمِعتَyou heard دُعاءَthe prayers of القَومِthe people مِنfrom كَثَبِnearby
And may the God of creation not let their striving fail,
Sword of caliphate and blood kinship alliance thus
For you have heard the people's prayers from close by.
Calamities when neglected are not neglected.
سَيفَO Sword of الخِلافَةِthe Caliphate دُمremain حِلفَthe ally of المَضاءِsharpness كَذاthus

إِنَّindeed الخُطوبَcalamities إِذاwhen لَمnot تَنبُyou fail to cut لَمnot تَنُبِthey befall
Sword of the Caliphate, remain thus allied with sharpness:
May you live for a state whose rights you supported
For calamities do not strike when you do not fail to cut.
It orbits around you like the celestial sphere.
وَعِشand live لِدَولَةِfor a state of حَقٍّright ظَلتَyou have kept تَعضُدُهاsupporting it

فَإِنَّهاfor indeed it مِنكَthrough you قَدalready دارَتhas turned عَلىupon قُطُبِa pivot
And live for a rightful state that you have kept supporting,
For through you it now revolves upon a pivot.
