Are they not from a family that masters
Adding beauty to beauty, and fair to the fair
the Revelation by heart and knows its interpretation?
Where no rancor festers in hearts sheepish-meek

Of noble stock, their branches grew tall
And hands grasp no more than their labors can reap
through piety and intellect, and their roots were pure.
While that race disappeared, you dawned in our clime

They have been known for good deeds and generosity as
As they faded away into evening’s dim time
youths and elders, children and mature men.
Who yearns for his people need yearn but for you—

Since they raced to remove injustice and
There his wishes find welcome and there rest his hopes
evil, they have dragged their robe-trains over al-Simak.
Where minds can voice thoughts and the stumblers recover

They joined excellence with generosity, unbidden,
And losers find shelter, the fallen gain splendor
and added noble deeds to beauty.
A sanctuary barring all stillness of languor

Where hearts harbor no
Since there I’m denied all attempts to repose
rancor, and hands know no embezzlement.
I came seeking boons but expected no more

You are indeed the suns among us, remaining
Than my fancy presumed or supposed I should get
when those stars went down and vanished.
But your riches sufficed not by merely removing

And if someone yearns for his kin, my longing
My poverty—no!—you destroyed my deep sloth
never strays beyond your well-peopled court.
You persisted unstinting until I received

Where wishes find repose, and one who
Some taste of your bounty, copious and true
praises finds words, and one who stumbles, a pardoner.
Like thick thundershowers that saturate one land

So I deemed I could satisfy all of your gifts

I came to it for bounty, with no greater
But instead my attempts met with failure complete
expectation; it gave me renown and gifts.
If I journeyed to China with countless brigades

It was not content to rid me of poverty through
They could not convey even part of the sum of your blessings
wealth, until it rid me of obscurity as well.
So slow down! For already my share of your grace

It never ceased its lavish beneficence until
Has exceeded the goals of all wishes of mine
I myself poured out lavish gifts from a portion of it.
Gifts that, with the cold, seem to shy from my gaze

Like massed clouds that single out a land
Though in fact they are heavy and generous of line
with rain, then cover another with torrents.
If I were permitted, I’d traverse the breadth of all earth

Then I began asking you to withhold
Continually hymning your gifts with no pause
your gifts, attempting an impossible task.
But no! Gently softly! My hopes have ascended

Reproaching generosity—never before me had anyone seen
Beyond spells and charms and the need for such chants
a poet become a reproacher of bounty.
Despite hindrances barring my audience with you

Let Egypt persist hearing this as my creed:

ني رَعيلٌ مِنهُنَّ يَتلو رَعيلا
Even if I settled in China, there would come
That I’ll never abandon affection for you!
to me a troop of them, following another troop.
If you heal my frail frame, you give hope that was dead

Gently now! My share has exceeded
A new lease, but if not, you have left me no choice—
fullness and completion through your gifts.
For I’ll not be content among vital men breathing

A calamity has indeed kept me from meeting you;
If I can not meet you nor gaze on your face
I wish it would not keep me from speaking.
I will press on my feet though they shudder and weaken

An ailment that made me like a spear-shaft,
Be I blameworthy or blameless, absolved or accused
brown in color, thin, and withered.

So let Egypt be told, in any event,
Both the frowning of strangers and the smiles of true intimates
that I will never turn away from loving her.
Of lightnings revealing the distant as near

When you are their quest, and the gloomy as bright plains

Who’d deem brevity best should know I’m enamored

May I lose my life if I would accept
Of prolixity solely when writing your name
my life as a substitute for seeing you.

Swift-striding, they are kin to the track-erasing winds,
and disown Shadqam and Jadil.
