I deem it folly—even if the reproacher comes

with good cause—to say what he says.

I have no inclination toward reproach,

    nor do I accept rebuke.

And how can he recover from a deep-seated malady—

a sick man whose burning thirst is never quenched?

I yearn beside the dwellings, though they are desolate,

as a bereaved she-camel moans beside a calf's stuffed hide.

And I long for the dwellings and their inhabitants,

as a sick man longs for his health.

I wept awhile for their estrangement, and awhile

for their distance, with departure drawing near.

Separation and estrangement left no tears

with which to shower the landmarks and the ruins.

Among the things that waste me is a mighty longing,

which feeble patience struggles to subdue.

May God reward the west wind with good,

for when it blows, I have a messenger in it.

I entrust it with a greeting to Salma,

whose answer the east wind brings back.

    عَرَتنا قَبلَها وَهُمُ حُلولُ

    Between me and those departing lies vast separation;

before it, while they still dwelt here, we were visited by

calamities that drive even the closest away,

and at which the kind and devoted sever ties.

But with Abu al-Muzaffar, should they descend,

is a resting place that grants relief from their assaults.

Through him the crimes of the nights were forgiven,

and procrastinating Time fulfilled its promise.

To his pouring generosity he added valor,

in which whatever terrifies is easy for him.

He destroyed an adversary and gained renown

    that endures even when the rooted mountains pass away;

and security at which the days themselves marvel,

and justice in which he has no equal.

Among those near and far circulate

his gifts, though wine has not gone round.

Deeds that made the paths of eminence rugged,

so there is no path by which to catch up with them.

Their fame spread until equal were the

one who knows what they establish and the ignorant.

Thus whoever gained a kingdom through good fortune

and luck became certain that he was an intruder in it.

The pride of kings pursued, without a guide,

    paths that no guide knows.

The rugged ground of noble deeds is easy for him,

and calamities' hardships are docile before him.

A bounty by which petitioners live, and a might

    by which rancors and blood feuds die;

and resolve that neither lies nor offers idle promises,

and judgment that is neither blunted nor unsound.

    لَهُ بِالقَلعَةِ الشَمّاءِ غيلُ

    A lion has guarded this whole land of al-Sham;

in the lofty citadel he has his thicket.

He is feared though the sharp swords are not drawn,

nor have the horses left their tethering places.

Never absent from the enemies' hearing is

the clang of sword edges mingled with neighing.

In the caliphate's hand, when he strikes,

is a sword that no dullness touches.

So let no listener lend ear to alarmist rumors,

whom passion sways whichever way it turns.

    وَهَيبَتُكَ الجَوامِعُ وَالكُبولُ

    All the enemies of this kingdom are captives;

the dread you inspire is their fetters and shackles.

You do not fear enemies who have no strength,

even if the routed and the slain are many.

When you give freely, none is disappointed except

an adviser urging you to give less, or a reproacher.

May he be your ransom whose integrity is due to something

he fears, and he whose distinction is obscurity.

In sovereignty's heart is rancor against him,

which surrounds him; his lordliness is treachery.

And a deluded man who saw that advancing brings death,

so returned to seek favor and release.

Like a torrent overpowered by a lofty mountain,

it turned aside when a watercourse crossed its path.

It was a resolve that went astray,

    until sound judgment became tractable.

    وَآخِرُها وِدادٌ بَل نُكولُ

    Its beginning was aggression and venturing abroad;

    its ending, affection—rather, retreat.

The utmost aim of one who raids to win spoils,

when his aims exhaust him, is to return home.

His expectation indeed failed, and he took friendship in exchange,

which he wields against others, not against Time.

If the sharp swords and lofty spears fail,

the letter and the envoy have not failed.

What ails the Romans—may they never lack delusion—

that an impossible hope beguiles them?

    مَتى صارَت تَخونُهُمُ العُقولُ

    I have known their wishes to betray them;

when did their minds begin betraying them?

For this reason they withheld your due and took

a substitute in its place; but the substitute did not hold.

You relinquished the stallion, though they had intended

resistance; then yielding overtook them all.

And you were well able to seize it by force,

and you are pledged to return it out of generosity.

People treacherously unbind what they have bound,

but your bond is neither undone nor changed.

Whomever you exalt has no one to abase him,

and whomever you abase has no one to restore his fortune.

Can the branches resist a valiant man,

when the roots obey whenever he resolves?

What, then, will become of them when the horses are unleashed—

stallions with stallions upon their backs?

In every battle the spears veil them

with gore, though none of it is their saddlecloth.

And it clothes the morning in a dye of dust,

like night; the blades within it bleach the dye.

    بِأَسيافِ العِدى مِنهُ فُلولُ

    A resolve forbids you to be made to suffer abasement;

from it the enemies' swords bear notches.

Let an age in which you live possess glory,

for you are Time's hand that strikes.

It assumed this hand to dispel its stinginess,

and sometimes even a miser makes his gift lavish.

You are not rivaled in glory, except

when white stockings rise above forehead blazes.

Your bounty has surpassed my words, though long ago

I surpassed benefactors with what I say.

Through it I attained my hopes, though between me

and even the nearest of them lay a long span.

    Today Time's fang misses me,

beside you, and its gaze toward me is dim.

I was a target for its vicissitudes, until

the deep shade of your favors covered me.

I shall thank them, giving voice to praise

whose reach even those who speak at length cannot attain:

    مُقيمٍ وَهوَ في الدُنيا يَجولُ

    light, yet burdening the envious with weight;

enduring, though it roams throughout the world.

Sheets of paper contain it, to be folded,

and generation after generation will spread their merit.

Bright stars in the sky of your eminence,

yet they never set from that sky.
