Both of us, if you reflect on it, stand on a brink,

and enough time has passed in excuses and delay.

Indeed, I conceal what I have suffered to safeguard

your honor; so grant me favor before concealment ends.

Do not entrust your wealth to him; for even if

fortune were unclouded for you as of old, he would not be sincere.

He ruled the agency house at will, and it became

through his raids a bare plain, level as he wished.

So he impoverished others and grew rich, yet did not curb his evil,

and seized the inheritance of all peoples, yet was not content.

That wrongdoing added to his unease,

for fear of being repaid for what he had done before.

    فَلا يَلغَ مَن لا يَقوَ إِلّا لِتَضعُفا

    And his arrow has shown itself in the fray and in prestige;

so let no one prattle who grows strong only to make you weak.

    فَلا كانَ ما يَرجو لَدَيَّ وَلا اِشتَفا

    He singled me out for injustice to provoke me;

so may his hopes concerning me never come to pass, nor may he find satisfaction.

And he put me off for a time, until I complained of him,

yet I encountered only someone who put me off.

If kindness is absent from you, we shall not find

a man whose way in justice and generosity can be followed.

You are the leader of the noble men of this age; do not stray

from the right course, whether time wrongs you or keeps faith.

And do not forget the words of thanks to you he has never ceased

to utter, and the poems chosen for your glory.

And be merciful to one who seeks the return of his wealth,

left standing more abject than those who beg others for aid.
