May glory rejoice in a branch whose root you have become,

and a sapling nurtured by soil that brings forth excellence,

and a blessing for the month of fasting—spread its shade—

    those who fasted in it and those who prayed will give thanks for it;

and a day on which the All-Watching One raised

for the faith of guidance a might that deepens the enemies' abasement.

    فَكَيفَ إِذا لاقَوهُ مُستَصحِباً شِبلا

    Indeed, the lion of al-Sharā terrified them all alone;

what then, when they meet him accompanied by a cub?

By my life, the herald has indeed brought tidings

that restore to gray hair the youth that has departed,

of the most fortunate newborn, whose arrival bears a promise:

his good fortune will banish fear and drought.

Before weaning, he will ascend to a station

from which he sees Saturn as a sandal for his foot's arch.

And before coming of age, he will reach a height

whose lowest point has eluded others even in maturity.

May you live for him until he is seen as the grandfather of a family

whose good fortune lets them spend their nights higher than Jupiter.

And may he be found with a resolve like yours when sword blades

clang, and men dread facing the fire of war.

For Masʿūd's ambition is like yours, which

built a glory: time wears away, but it does not.

    وَبِالغُصنِ قِدماً يَعرِفُ الرائِدُ الحَملا

    For he is a flame whose firestick is Muṣṭafā al-Mulk;

and a scout has long known the fruit by the branch.

Through our lord the Imam's mainstay and sword,

God dispelled whatever was grave among the perils of calamity,

and untied knots that, had mankind attempted them,

all together, they could not have undone.

How many a king he has left as a warning among men,

and but for him, that king's finest course would not have come to an end.

O you who shield my face from people who have become

rancor in glory's breast and a shackle around its throat:

Gently now! How often you have relieved me with a favor,

only to burden me with the weight of gratitude for its blessings.

And how could success elude my appeals to you,

when they have alighted only with mankind's most faithful keeper of covenants?

So may the shade of your glory never leave me, for it is

a resource for those whose efforts fail, and a guide for those who stray.

And may I ever be heard offering congratulations at a court

where the brides of my maiden verses are forever unveiled.
