Upon the neck of your exalted rank, my praise at every moment
With your graceful neck, my praise for you flows at all times
Gleams as though it were a necklace of pearls.
Gleaming like a pearl necklace
وَلَوand even if لَمnot يَنظِمِcompose in verse الشُعَراءُthe poets مَدحاًpraise

لَكُمfor you أَغنَتكُمُwould have sufficed you سُوَرَthe chapters of القُرانِthe Qur'an
Even if the poets had composed no praise
Even if poets did not compose praises for you
For you, the chapters of the Qur'an would have sufficed you.
The verses of the Quran would have sung your praises
وَفيand in ضِمنِthe midst of الصَلاةِthe prayer لَكُمfor you صَلاةٌa blessing
فَلاحٌsalvation فيin الإِقامَةِthe call to begin prayer وَالأَذانِand the call to prayer
And within the prayer is a blessing for you:
Included in the prayer for you is a special prayer
Salvation in the call to begin prayer and the call to prayer.
Clear at the call to prayer and during the ritual prayer
أَلَستَare you not اِبنَthe son of الَّذيthe one who قَهَرَoverpowered الأَعاديthe enemies
وَذادَand warded off بِرَأيِهِwith his judgment غِيَرَthe vicissitudes of الزَمانِtime
Are you not the son of him who conquered the enemies
Are you not the son of the one who conquered the enemies
And warded off time's vicissitudes with his judgment?
And warded off the vicissitudes of time with his wisdom
وَرَوَّعَand terrified كُلَّevery صاحِبِbearer of مَشرَفِيٍّa Mashrafi sword
مَروعٍfearsome وَهوَwhile he صاحِبُa wearer of طَيلَسانِa shawl
And terrified every bearer of a Mashrafi sword,
And terrified every lofty and conceited person
A fearsome one, while he himself wore a shawl.
A terrifying one, the lord of Teylasan
وَشاعَand spread إِباؤُهُhis proud defiance فيamong الناسِthe people حَتّىuntil

His proud defiance spread among the people until
Whose father's fame spread among people until
Those far and near warned one another against him.
Both near and far were talking about him
إِذاwhen الهَيجاءُbattle هاجَتهُroused him رَأَتهُit saw him

مَلِيّاًfully capable بِالضِرابِof swordplay وَبِالطِعانِand of spear-thrusting
Whenever battle roused him, it saw him
When the bold ones became insolent before him
Fully capable of swordplay and spear-thrusting.
They saw him striking and stabbing with his spear
لَهُhe has فيin الصُبحِthe morning فَرسَةُthe mauling of لَيثِa lion of غابٍa thicket

وَتَحتَand beneath اللَيلِthe night نَهشَةُthe bite of أُفعُوانِa great male serpent
By morning, he mauls like a lion of the thicket,
In the morning he rides a fierce lion
And beneath the night, he bites like a mighty serpent.
And at night a biting serpent
وَلَمّاand when غابَhe was absent عَنّاfrom us نُبتَyou stood in عَنهُfor him

And when he was absent from us, you took his place,
When he left us, it was as if a sword
As the keen sword took the spearhead's place.
Had lost its sharp cutting edge
وَإِنand though كانَتwere خِلالُthe qualities of الناسِpeople شَتّىdiverse
فَماso ... not العَلياءُexcellence إِلّاexcept فيin ثَمانِeight
Though people's qualities are diverse,
Although the status of people varies
Excellence lies in eight things alone:
The exalted are only a handful
إِقالَةِhelping up عاثِرٍone who has stumbled وَغِنىand enriching فَقيرٍa poor person
وَنَيلِand attaining مُمَنَّعٍthe unassailable وَفَكاكِand releasing عانِa captive
Helping up the fallen, and enriching the poor;
Relieving the fallen, enriching the poor
Attaining the unassailable, and freeing a captive;
And fulfilling the wishes of the deprived
وَأَمنٍand security لَمnot يُشَبwas mixed بِمَذيقِwith an admixture of خَوفٍfear

وَمَنٍّand bounty لَمnot يُكَدَّرwas clouded بِاِمتِنانِby reminders of favors
Security unmixed with any trace of fear;
And security not tainted by any fear
And bounty unclouded by reminders of the favor;
And bounty not marred by obligation
وَبَذلِand instilling الرُعبِterror فيin عاصٍa rebel وَباغٍand an aggressor

وَبَسطِand spreading العَدلِjustice فيamong قاصٍone far away وَدانِand one nearby
Instilling terror in a rebel and an aggressor;
And spreading fear amongst rebels and dissidents
And spreading justice among those far and near.
And establishing justice amongst compatriots and strangers
صِفاتٌqualities كُمِّلَتwere perfected لَكَfor you مُؤذِناتٌannouncing

بِأَنَّكَthat you فيamong الكِرامِthe noble بِغَيرِwithout ثانِa peer
Qualities perfected in you, proclaiming
These are attributes that signify for you
That among the noble you have no peer;
That you are unparalleled in nobility
وَأَنَّand that المَجدَglory ماwhat توليهِyou bestow it لاnot ماwhat

And that glory is what you bestow, not what
And that glory lies not in what
So-and-so relates from so-and-so.
One person narrates about another
رَأَيناwe saw مِنكَfrom you ماwhat لَمnot يُروَwas related عَنهُمabout them
فَأَلغَيناso we discarded السَماعَhearsay لَدىin the presence of العِيانِdirect sight
We saw from you what was never related about them,
We have seen in you what was never seen in them
So we dismissed hearsay in the face of direct sight.
So we put aside hearsay in the face of evidence
خَفواthey faded لَمّاwhen ظَهَرتَyou appeared كَذاكَlikewise يَخفىfades

بِضَوءِin the light of الشَمسِthe sun نورُthe glow of الزِبرِقانِthe full moon
They faded when you appeared; likewise fades
They faded when you appeared
In the sun's light, the glow of the full moon.
Just as sunlight obscures the light of crystals
وَقَهرُكَand your subjugation of مَنthe one who أَخافَfrightened الناسَthe people قِدماًlong ago
كَفاكَsufficed you تَطاوُلاًpreeminence فيin ذاthis الزَمانِage
Your subjugation of one who long frightened the people
Your conquest of those who once struck fear
Sufficed to give you preeminence in this age.
Suffices you in boastfulness in this time
فَماso there is no مِنamong عالَمِthe inhabitants of الغَبراءِthe dust-colored earth عادٍaggressor
وَلاnor فيin الجَمَّةِthe copious waters الخَضراءِgreen جانِa wrongdoer
Thus no aggressor remains among the dusty earth's inhabitants,
So no mighty person from the dusty land
Nor any wrongdoer in the vast green waters.
Nor a demon from the verdant valley
لِأَنَّكَbecause you مُنذُsince صِرتَbecame لَهاfor her قَريناًa companion

For since you became her companion,
Remains, because since you became bound to it
The effect of the conjunction has appeared on earth.
The impact of the Quran began appearing on earth
وَإِنand indeed جاوَزتَyou exceeded قَدرَthe scope of المَدحِpraise حَتّىso that

Indeed, you have surpassed the bounds of praise so far
And even if praise goes beyond your merit
That one striving at it has become like one who idles.
Until even the palm trees vie in praising you
وَإِنَّand indeed حَديثَكَthe tale of you السَيّارَfar-traveling أَشهىsweeter

And the far-traveling tale of you is sweeter
Your delightful discourse is more pleasing
To the music-lover's ear than songs.
To a refined ear than melodies
فِداؤُكَyour ransom كُلُّevery ذيpossessor of عَرَضٍworldly wealth عَزيزٍhard to obtain

May your ransom be all whose wealth is inaccessible
You are the redemption for every person of honor
To the hopeful, and all whose honor is debased;
Whether hopeful or disgraced
وَأَملاكٌand kings أَبادواthey squandered ماwhat أَبادواthey squandered

And kings who squandered all they squandered,
You have brought life with al-Wahadi and al-Rawwas
Wasting it on wine-flasks and singing slave-girls.
With flowing water before cups
وَعَزَّand was scarce الخَيرُgoodness مِنهُمfrom them فَالتَعازيso condolences

And good was scarce from them, so condolences
And with horses and wild game
When time struck them were congratulations.
You have made meadows of praise needless of irrigation
لَقَدindeed رَوّىdrenched وَهادِيَmy valleys وَالرَوابيand the hills

حَياًlife-giving rain قَبلَbefore اِنتِجاعيهِmy seeking its bounty سَقانيwatered me
Indeed, my valleys and the hills were drenched
Gifts came to me, so I imagined it was Kisra
By rain that watered me before I sought it.
And days like festivals
وَأَغنىand made independent بِالسَواريwith night showers وَالغَواديand morning showers

رِياضَthe gardens of الحَمدِpraise عَنfrom needing سُقياwatering by السَوانيwater-drawing camels
And with night and morning showers it spared
Neither delayed by procrastination or compelling
The gardens of praise the watering of well-drawing camels.
Nor preceded by a promise or guarantee
هَداياgifts واصَلَتcame in succession فَظَنَنتُso I imagined كِسرىKisra
وَأَيّاماًand days كَيَومِlike the day of المِهرَجانِthe Mihrijan festival
Gifts kept arriving, so I imagined Kisra,
And if your munificence has enriched me
And days like the day of Mihrijan.
Then so have the rhymes I devoted to you
وَماand not شينَتwere marred بِمَطلٍby delay وَاِقتِضاءٍand demands for fulfillment

They were not marred by delay or demands for fulfillment,
Taking me to the lands of Nahrawan
Nor were they preceded by a promise or pledge.
And to the edges of Qayrawan
وَإِنand if أَغنىenriched نَداكَyour generosity فَقَدthen indeed تَغَنّىsang

بِماwith what حَبَّرتُI finely composed فيكَabout you الخافِقانِEast and West
And if your bounty has enriched me, there has been singing
Marvels that have no intercessor
Of what I finely composed about you, by East and West.
When they befall a wrathful king
فَأَقصاهُso its farthest reach بِأَرضِin the land of النَهرَوانِNahrawan

Its farthest reach is in the land of Nahrawan,
Wonders apart from you are averse
And its nearest, at the farthest edge of Qayrawan.
As old women are averse to youth
غَرائِبُrare marvels لاnot يُرَدُّis turned away لَهاfor them شَفيعٌan intercessor

إِذاwhen حَلَّتthey alight ذُرىthe heights of مَلِكٍa king هِجانِof pure lineage
Rare marvels whose intercessor is never turned away
I have presented to you all prime poetry
When they alight on the heights of a king of pure lineage.
And not allowed others to share in it
أَوانِسُcompanionable maidens عَنfrom سِواكَanyone other than you لَهاthey have نِفارٌaversion
كَماjust as نَفَرَتrecoiled مِنَfrom الشَيبِgray hair الغَوانيbeautiful women
Companionable maidens, recoiling from all but you,
Shall I praise one in whom I doubt
As beautiful women recoil from gray hair.
And abandon one who initiated his favors to me
زَفَفتُI escorted as brides إِلَيكَto you فيهاamong them كُلَّevery بَكرٍvirgin
وَلَمand not أَسمَحI gave freely لِغَيرِكَto anyone other than you بِالعَوانِwith the once-married woman
In them I brought you every virgin as a bride,
And call upon one who is stubborn and unaware
And granted no other even a woman once wed.
And refrain from answering one who called upon me
أَأَمدَحُshould I praise مَنone who أُرَجِّمُI hazard فيهِabout him ظَنّيmy conjecture
وَأَترُكُand leave مَنone who بِأَنعُمِهِwith his favors اِبتَدانيfirst approached me
Should I praise one about whom I hazard guesses,
I do not see holding back my tears
And leave one who first approached me with his favors?
As your bestowal preventing their flow
وَأَدعوand call upon مَنone who بِهِin him صَمَمٌdeafness وَعِيٌّand inarticulacy
وَأَقعُدُand refrain عَنfrom إِجابَةِanswering مَنone who دَعانيcalled me
And call upon one who is deaf and inarticulate,
You have been exalted in deeds, and I in words
And refrain from answering one who called me?
So one who saw you, and one who read my works
وَلَستُand I do not أَرىconsider إِراقَةَspilling ماءِthe water of وَجهيmy face

نَوالُكَyour bounty عَنfrom إِراقَتِهِspilling it نَهانيforbade me
Nor do I contemplate spilling the water of my face;
Was certain that you are the lord of the pinnacle of glory
Your bounty has kept me from spilling it.
And that I am the lord of the pinnacle of meaning
شَرُفتَyou became distinguished مَناقِباًin virtues وَشَرَفتُand I became distinguished قَولاًin speech
فَأَيقَنَso became certain مَنwhoever رَآكَsaw you وَمَنand whoever رَآنيsaw me
You are distinguished in virtues, and I in speech;
So the nights do not cease surrendering to you
So whoever saw you, and whoever saw me, knew for certain
And all that the two horizons contain bow to you
بِأَنَّكَthat you رَبُّthe lord of أَبكارِvirgins of المَعاليlofty achievements
وَأَنّيand that I رَبُّthe lord of أَبكارِvirgins of المَعانيpoetic meanings
That you are lord of virgin deeds of greatness,
The vast desert was not obscured by darkness
And I am lord of virgin meanings.
But rather illuminated by your glory like fires
فَلاso may ... not بَرِحَتcease تَدينُsubmit لَكَto you اللَياليthe nights

May the nights never cease to obey you,
You spend each year after year
And bow as long as the two Farqad stars stay close.
Vanquishing it with never fading life
وَلاand may not دَجَتِgrow dark البَسيطَةُthe earth بَلbut rather أَضاءَتshine

May the earth never darken, but shine
With your glory as long as the two luminaries shine.
تُقَضّيyou spend الدَهرَtime عاماًa year بَعدَafter عامٍa year

May you pass through time, year after year,
And exhaust it with a life that never ends.
