    you than any upright witness.

You have ever, along the paths of eminence,

shown the way, never needing to be shown.

by a resolve that cuts when the keen sword dulls.

You are known for this; likewise lions

    act through strength, not stratagems.

Some were bands bound fast by wars,

and some were companies effaced by destruction.

but his terror grew, and he went astray.

    Hudhayfa's fear obscured for him

at al-Jafr what was not hidden from Hamal.

Had he sought your door for protection,

he would thereby have preserved the kingdom he surrendered.

    Kingdoms abandoned by their lord,

who fled, leaving them like untended sheep.

Every shaggy lion snatched them away,

and every lean simʿ beast ruled over them.

and protected their spoils from embezzlement.

    he divided those spoils justly.

wildernesses where whoever guided would lead astray:

deserts which, had al-Shanfara sought them,

he would not have escaped, despite his knowledge of night travel.

and his banners in a barren land.

whenever they hedged their words, he acted.

even when they hastened, you outpaced them with deliberation.

whose father won the race while he has yet to come second.
