Our love for you, though you neither favor us nor give,

remains as you knew it when separation had not yet come.

We kept faith and did not heed a speaker's saying:

“When the absent one has wronged you, absence brings no pain.”

    وَكَم حَكَمَ المَولى بِما كَرِهَ العَبدُ

    Love made you arbiters over us, and you dealt unjustly;

how often a master decrees what his servant dislikes.

A passion just as exile and separation wished,

and sickness just as estrangement and rejection desire.

In aversion, abandonment, and hatred you reached

a limit that parting and distance could not increase.

If al-Udhri searched the encampment for his sturdy she-camel,

I searched for sleep my eyelids have never known.

How welcome a wind, for all that it carries,

bringing your fragrance from al-Sham at evening or morning.

    فَفيها الضَنى وَالبُرءُ وَالصابُ وَالشَهدُ

    It stirs longings and quenches a burning thirst;

in it are wasting sickness and healing, bitter sap and honey.

    And a dwelling at Muqra—not al-Aqiq or al-Liwa—

and roses at Satra—not yellow daisies or green arak berries.

And a woman adorned with beauty, bewitching through it,

her overtures playful, her turning away in earnest.

Hilali by birth, a crescent to those who seek her,

guarded by Indian blades and supple spears.

    لَكُم مَقصَدٌ مِن بَعدِهِ وَلَنا قَصدُ

    That evening, at a stopping place, we were given no solace;

beyond it you had one destination, and we another.

We wept, making the envious laugh, and our tears were increased

by the roaring of mature camels, as the riders pressed on.

We show you the clouds' weeping while lightning laughs,

and how they redouble their downpour when thunder guffaws.

So show no anger if there is no contentment,

and heap no blame if there is no praise.

And do not find strange—for time draws near and drives apart—

events in which the scabbard grew too tight for the keen sword.

    فَلي أَبَداً فيهِ وَفي أَهلِهِ زُهدُ

    I severed my ties with the Nile's meager bounty;

I remain forever indifferent to it and its people.

I turned toward Fakhr al-Dawla, who bestows wealth

swiftly, with honor and glory enfolded within it.

    He lavished his gifts freely,

noble in lineage, without a peer among mankind.

    وَيَقبُحُ بي مَع فِعلِهِ لا بِهِ الجَحدُ

    Extravagance becomes him, not me or my wishes;

ingratitude ill becomes me—not him—after his deeds.

How could I be ungrateful, when wondrous verses have spread and traveled,

honoring those who sing them and those who chant them to camels?

They leave enduring marks upon noble lineages,

and avail when wealth and children are of no avail.

    Raging winds bear them swiftly

to every land the couriers fall short of reaching.

Yet they fall short of what he deserves,

however long the speeches, however fully effort is spent.

He understood them fully and doubled their reward:

a learned, generous man, with discernment and ready coin.

Swift to bold action and generosity, he has no concern,

when they arise, except to seize them both.

His aid against a wrongdoer is not preceded

    by a threat; nor his bounty—even unasked—by a promise.

An imposing man whom noble deeds and eminence captivate,

while others are captivated by Zaynab or Hind.

A love that did not obstruct manly virtue in youth,

whose bond was never loosened in the age of gray hair.

    فَعَذلُهُمُ جَزرٌ وَأَنعُمُهُ مَدُّ

    His reproachers were distracted by gifts from reproaching him;

their blame ebbs, while his favors are a rising tide.

So did hopes say to them, rebuking

and mocking—for truth admits no rebuttal—

“Be sparing toward them—may your father have no father!—

in blame, or fill the place that they have filled”?

If a man of mettle and fortune seeks to reach his rank,

the keen sword in his hand fails, and his fire-stick yields no spark.

Bounty, some of which enriched supplicants, and some

an envoy to every land whose people never came as envoys.

And a mind that shows him each matter radiant and clear,

though a pitch-black night of the unseen lies before it.

And resolve whose edge never fails in danger,

beside it, generosity that has no limit.

Had these two come earlier, there would have been no boasting of Ibn Mama

by Iyad, nor would al-Azd have celebrated its Muhallab.

    فَأُخراهُ إِكداءٌ وَأَوّلُهُ كَدُّ

    Let no seeker of his stature waste his toil;

its end is failure, its beginning drudgery.

Are you not the son of one who turned calamities back blunted?

But for him, their dark disasters would never have abated.

Events amid which al-Sham reeled with everyone

within it; and Damascus, of all its cities, was a cradle.

Though you raised, for the house whose pride you are,

virtues that exalt both father and grandfather,

they came before you in time, yet they

fall behind you in generosity and merit, when reckoned.

Nobility was scattered among them; you gathered it together

and added to it, as a gallop outstrips a trot.

So too the lights of the stars grow faint

when the peerless moon unveils its rays.

The skin of the earth is, beyond doubt, one,

yet its lofty peaks and lowlands are not equal.

Though they themselves surpassed the nobles who possessed

virtues—neither these nor their possessors can be counted.

Tamim long ago boasted of Darim,

though they were few, however numerous Sa'd was.

Rain-clouds of bounty, bringing aid against drought whenever

it assails; and lions, with noble steeds galloping beneath them.

How often they lowered their eyes in modesty after giving gifts,

and how often they knocked at praise's door and were not turned away.

They surpassed those they rivaled through virtues

whose paths mankind's eyes are forever too bleary to see.

    وَإِن بَخِلوا جادوا وَإِن هَزَلوا جَدّوا

    When silenced, they speak; even when they bow, they stand proud;

even when miserly, they give; even when jesting, they are serious.

You find them mute amid foul speech and obscenity,

but when they vie in merit or contend, they are unyielding opponents.

You, of all men, have least need to mention ancestors:

when musk gives off its fragrance, laurel goes unmentioned.

You are self-sufficient, with a soul unrivaled in eminence,

aided by good fortune, never forsaken by earnest effort.

If you have driven from it everyone enamored of it,

no wonder that lions defend their dens.

If a throne you ascended rose beyond al-Jawza,

your cradle had already surpassed it before you were weaned.

May festivals keep coming and passing,

while your bounty is drawn upon and your shade stretches wide.

    فَأَغنى كَما أَغنى عَنِ الثَمَدِ العِدُّ

    A pouring cloud gave me drink, though I had not sought it out;

it satisfied my need, as a perennial spring makes scant pools needless.

    وَقَصَّرتُ لا عَن عادَةٍ أَنا وَالحَمدُ

    You and generosity have favored me, as is your habit;

I and praise have fallen short—not from habit.

    وَما خِلتُها إِذ أَمكَنَ القَولُ تَرتَدُّ

    Long ago, poetry's rhymes used to submit to me;

I never thought they would rebel when speech lay ready.

They deserted me when I tried to champion them,

though I have always prevailed through them, and they are my army.

There is no excuse for falling short after favors

the least of which makes hard stone speak.
