خليلي ما للبيد قد عبقت نشرا
My beloved, why has the expanse turned fragrant with blossoms,
نشوان ما فوق الكثيب مهفهف
The branches above the sand dune flutter
حيا وحياة سرمد وتحية
Alive and everlasting life, and greetings
رمي الموت إن السهم صابا
The arrows of death always hit their mark
بعيشك هل أبصرت من قبل أحرفا
With life's vision have you ever seen
يا وردة جادت بها يد متحفي
O rose brought by the hand of a connoisseur
كم بين شطيك من ري لجانحة
How many streams between your banks
ولا كالرصافة من منزل
Not like the fertile meadow where
قالوا وقد أكثروا في حبه عذلي
They blamed me and accused me much of loving him,
من عاند الحق لم يعضده برهان
He who contends with truth, no proof avails him,
عفا الله عني فإني امرؤ
May God forgive me, for I am but a man
تفاحة أهديت إليه
An apple was gifted to him
لو كنت شاهده وقد غشي الوغى
If you had seen him when the battle grew dark,
وأرض شلب وما شلب وإن ولدت
The land of Shalib, though Shalib is naught,
انظر إلى نقشي البديع
Look at my wonderful engraving
لا ومسك اللمى وورد الخدود
Not the musk of cheeks, nor roses of the face,
سبقت ولكن في الفضائل كلها
You excelled, but in all virtues
أدرها فالغمامة قد أجالت
The clouds have gathered, obscuring the horizon
قصير الأنابيب لكنه
Short of breath but
أقوى محل من شبابك آهل
A mightier place than your youth has crumbled,
يا راكبا واللوى شمال
O rider, turning left
خليلي ما أدري إذا اختل شملنا
My beloved, I know not what to do should we part
وعشي رائق منظره
A radiant evening, its view shortened
وأقول إن أنا لم أفه بثنائكم
If I do not comprehend your praise
سلام أبا بكر عليك ورحمة
Greetings Abu Bakr, peace and mercy upon you
ألوي الضلوع عن الولوع بخطرة
I distract my ribs from smoldering passion
وروض جلا صدأ العين به
In a meadow whose freshness delights the eye
أتتني من تلك السجايا بنفحة
A breeze came to me from those meadows
عذيري من جذلان يبدي كآبة
My companion from Jadhalan shows sadness
تفاءلت بالسكين لما بعثته
I hoped for tranquility when I sent the dagger
وذي حنين يكاد شجوا
With yearning that almost turns to lament
أدرها على أمن فما ثم من باس
Turn her safely, for no evil dwells in her light,
هذي مساعي ابن حربون وكيف بها
These are the efforts of Ibn Harbun, and how
خفضتم للمعالي نحو أندلس
You set sail toward majestic al-Andalus
ما أنزغ الشيخين بين الورى
What stirred the two sheikhs among the creation
ولم أر مثل صفار تصدى
I have not seen the like of anvil that withstands
سبوقا مغبات الظلام إليهما
Outpacing the darkness' confusions to them
ومنظومة سبعا وعشرين درة
A poem of twenty-seven shining pearls
وزنجي ألم بنور لوز
A black man shone with the light of an almond,
وجدول كاللجين سائل
A stream like liquid mud flows,
يقولون لي يوما وقد مر ضاربا
They say to me one day when the striker
أسامر البدر لما أبطأت وأرى
The full moon's rays delayed, though I see
نجم بأرض سلا أراب سقوطه
A star fell in the land of Sala enchanted me
أيدا تفيض وخاطرا متوقدا
Hands overflowing and a blazing conscience,
سراء شب بها الزمان الأشيب
The prosperity with which time grew old,
لك الود الذي لا ريب فيه
You have an affection beyond any doubt
سقى العهد من نجد معاهده بما
He made a pact from Najd with covenants that
ومهدل الشطين تحسب أنه
The slacker of the two banks you'd think it is
ومهفهف كالغصن إلا أنه
And as supple as a bough, although
غار بي الغرب إذ رآني
The West frowned at me when it saw me
رأى حركات قامته
He saw the movement of her figure,
حباني على بعد المدى بتحية
With greetings, I call to you from afar
أيها الآمل خيمات النقا
O you who yearn for the tents of Naqa,
لا تسل بعد قتل يوسف عني
Do not ask about me after Joseph's murder,
يا صاحبي على النوى ولأنتما
O my two companions at the place of farewell
طرقت مطلع الثريا وولت
The Pleiades rose and swayed,
وبنفسي من لا أسميه إلا
With my soul, whom I name naught but
وفي أذنك الجوزاء قرطا معلقا
With an earring of green chrysolite dangling in your ear,
محل ابن رزق جر فيه ذيوله
The dwelling of Ibn Rizq's son dragged its skirts therein,
ألأجرع تحتله هند
أبني البلاغة فيم حفل النادي
خاضوا عليك حشا الخليج ضنانة
ومجدين للسرى قد تعاطوا
يا حسن ما راق عيني من صنوبرة
بغمى من علي
في ليلة سدكت بالأرض فحمتها
يقولون لي يوما وقد عن جائزا
لو جئت نار الهدى من جانب الطور
ومطارح مما تجس بنانه
لمن كلم كالسحر من غنج أحداق
لمحلك الترفيع والتعظيم
فتوالت الأمحال تنقصه
يا عمرو أين عمير من كدى يمن
اجعل العلم أولا
إذا كان الذي يعرو مهما
ما مثل موضعك ابن رزق موضع
ذات الجناح تقلبي
دعاك خليل والأصيل كأنه
بدا الشفق البادي بعيد أصيل
