منازلهم تبكى إليك عفاءها

Their abodes weep to you their windswept plains

ولما رأيت العيش ولى برأسه

When I saw that life had turned away

وآلى زهير الحب يا عز أنه

Zuheir swore off love, oh my dear,

ما أطربت فوق الغصون حمامة

How pleasantly a dove coos above the branches—

لا تبكين من الليالي أنها

Do not weep from the nights that they

ولم أنس بالناووس أيامنا الألى

I have not forgotten the good old days

أبرق بدا أم لمع أبيض قاصل

A lightning flashed or a white flash rived,

أعينا امرءا نزحت عينه

I helped a man whose eyes overflowed

جمعت بطاعة حبك الأضداد

Opposites were brought together through obeying your love,

طرقتك بالدهنا وصحبك نوم

The night made you travel by twilight while your companions slept,

ألا بأبي زائري في العتم

Oh, my dear friend came to me in the dark night

تولى الحمام بظبي الخدور

The dove has turned away from the lovely doe

أيها المعتد في أهل النهى

O you who transgress against the prohibited people

إذا لم تجد إلا الأسى لك صاحبا

When you find naught but grief to be your friend,

ذكرتكم من غير أن تنساكم

I remembered you without forgetting you

لا تذهبن في الأمور فرطا

Do not go to excess in your affairs

وقالوا أصاب الموت نفسا كريمة

They said death has taken a noble soul

غير أني مع الوزير أبي القاسم

Yet I am with vizier Abul Qasim

نالت سليمان منه رجل

Sulayman gained from him a leg

هاتيك دارهم فقف بمغانها

You will find tears flowing in its slopes,

وطائرة تهوي كأن جناحها

Like a bird that swoops as though its wings

ظننا الذي نادى محقا بموته

We thought the one who called out at his death a liar,

يا سيدا أرجت طيبا شمائله

O master, his traits are fragrant

أصبيح شيم أم برق بدا

Is it the dawn whose splendor appears, or lightning that flashes?

شجته مغان من سليمى وأدؤر

Her charms enticed me from Suleima and Adwar,

بكى أسفا للبين يوم التفرق

He wept in sorrow when we parted

ما في الطلول من الأحبة مخبر

No tidings come from the beloved ones to inform,

مر بي في فلك من ربرب

A crescent moon passed me by, smiling from behind a cloud

ولرب حان قد أدرت بديره

In many a monastery I have lived, and there

أذن الديك فثب أو ثوب

The cock crowed, so get up or get dressed

ولما تملأ من سكره

When he was filled with his drunkenness

ولما رأيت الليل عسكر قره

When I saw the night encamp its steeds

وجلا زمانك وجهه متطلعا

Your time has passed with its face looking ahead,

لو شئت مما نلت كل علا

Had you desired from what you gained every elevation

لقد أطلعوا عند باب اليهود

The Jews saw at the door of Yahuwa

كتبت لها أنني عاشق

I wrote to her that I am a lover

أحللتني بمحلة الجوزاء

You honoured me with the station of glory,

أقبل فديت أبا العلاء نصيحتي

I offer my advice, oh Abu Al Alaa', so kindly accept

قل لمن زاد إذ تباعد بعدا

Say to the one who grew distant when we parted ways

يا أيها القمر الذي بمغيبه

O moon that when it sets

أفدي أسيماء من نديم

I ransom Usayma from a companion

يا صاحبي قم فقد أطلنا

O my friend, arise, for we have lingered long

ويح الكتابة من شيخ هبنقة

Alas for the scribbling of a feeble old man

أمن رسم دار بالعقيق محيل

From the traces of a house in Akik made,

ولم أر مثلي ما له من معاصر

I have not seen anyone like me, who has no contemporary,

أحن للبرق من تلقاء أرضهم

I yearn for lightning from their land’s horizon,

هذا كتابي وكف الموت تزعجني

This is my book, and the approach of death disturbs me,

أفي كل عام مصرع لعظيم

Does the death of a great man come every year?

مرض الجفون ولثغة في المنطق

The sickness of eyelids and a knot in speech

إلى المعتلي عاليت همي طالبا

To the one mounted aloft, I raise my worries

قد تركنا الصبا لكل غوى

We have left youth for every vain desire,

أستودع الله إخواني وعشرتهم

I entrust my brethren and their company to God,

وما ألان قناتي غمز حادثة

My purpose was never swayed by the wink of an incident,

فريق العدا من حد عزمك يفرق

The enemy flees in fear from your resolute might,

فريق العدا من حد عزمك يفرق

The band of enemies is split by your firm resolve,

وتدري سباع الطير أن كماته

The beasts of prey know well when eagles stoop

عجوز لعمر الصبا فانيه

An old woman whose youth has long passed

وفتية كالنجوم حسنا

Youthful as stars in their beauty

أبو جعفر رجل كاتب

أما الرياح بجو عاصم

وإني على ما هاج صدري وغاظني

لا يعمدون إلى ماء بآنية

إن لآليك أحدثت صلفا

غناك سعدك في ظل الظبا وسقى

وكأنني لما انحططت به

أبكيت إذ ظعن الفريق فراقضها

فلما بدا فيهم سليمان عندها

هل أبصرت عيناك يا خليلي

ومنفر للنوم مسكنه إذا

أنوح على نفسي وأندب نبلها

من لا أسمي ولا أبوح به

قريب بمحتل الهوان بعيد

اقر السلام على الأصحاب أجمعهم

وقالت النفس لما أن خلوت بها

أرى أعينا ترنو إلي كأنما

هلا سترت الشين بالزين

تأملت ما أفنيت من طول مدتي

وبلغت أقواما تجيش صدورهم

أمن جنابهم النفح الجنوبي

وناظرة تحت طي القناع

وأتاك بالنيروز شوق حافز

شكرت للدهر حسن ما صنعا

فيا أيها الباغي الفرار أمامه

ألا مسخ الله القطار حجارة
