حياتك أنفاس تعد وكلما
Your life is breaths that are counted, and
وذي ثقة تبدل حين أثرى
And one I trusted changed when fortune smiled
عمرك قد أفنيته تحتمي
You have squandered your life taking shelter
لعمرك ما بالعقل يكتسب الغنى
No matter how long you live, wealth is not gained by intellect
بخلت وليس البخل مني سجية
I acted miserly, but miserliness is not my nature,
أخي لن تنال العلم إلا بستة
My brother, you will not attain knowledge except through six:
الصدق حلو وهو المر
Truth is sweet though bitter
يقول أنا الكبير فبجلوني
The elder says: I am great, so revere me!
ولو أن دار الشيب قرت بصاحب
And if old age's home settled next to its neighbor
يا خاضب الشيب الذي
O dyer of the gray hair that
أتم الناس أعرفهم بنقصه
I know people best by their flaws
وعائب عابني بشيب
One who finds fault with me for my gray hair
أعارك ماله لتقوم فيه
He lent you his wealth so you could
أإن فات ما كنت أملته
If what you hoped for has passed you by
كنا نفر من الولاة
We fled from the oppression of tyrants to judges
لولا مفارقة الريب
Were it not for parting from blame
اصدق حديثك إن في الصد
I speak the truth in what I say
أخو البشر محمود على كل حالة
The brother of mankind is praiseworthy in every situation
يا رب كن لي وليا
Oh Lord, be my guardian
لا تسألن المرء عما عنده
Do not ask a man what is inside him
لا بر أعظم من مساعدة
No act of kindness is greater than helping others.
أراك يزيدك الإثراء حرصا
I see you increase your greed as wealth pursues you
إن اللبيب إذا تفرق أمره
When the wise man's affairs fall apart
المرء بعد الموت أحدوثة
Man after death is news
إن عيشا إلى الممات مصيره
Life leads surely to death
هي الدنيا وزخرفها
It is the life and its embellishments
صابر الدهر على كر النوائب
Patient in hard times, enduring fate's blows
فإن يكن المشيب طرا علينا
If old age descends upon us
يشيب الناس في زمن طويل
People grow old over a long time
للضيف أن يقرى ويعرف حقه
A guest deserves hospitality and respect
المرء دنيا نفسه
A man's world is his soul
وقالوا ادخر ما حزته وجمعته
They said, "Save what you have earned and collected
إن التجني قاطع الرفد
In counsel lies the balm for pain
يبكي على ميت ويغفل نفسه
He weeps for a corpse, oblivious of himself
بكيت لقرب الأجل
I wept for the nearness of death
أي جهل يكون أبين من جهل
What ignorance could be clearer than the
قد قلت لما قال لي قائل
When someone said to me, “Hippocrates has reached his grave”
حررت ما يبقى من العمر
I devoted what remains of my
مروءة معسر عف قنوع
The generosity of a man in hardship, of good character and content
حدثت باليأس عنك النفس فانصرفت
I have despaired of you and turned away
وذي حيلة في الشيب ظل يحوطه
And one who had a trick for gray hair kept applying
ولفظك حين تلفظ في جميع
And your word, when uttered wholly
قلت ارفعي السجف نستمتع بمجلسنا
I said, "Lift the curtain so we can enjoy our gathering,
بادر شبابك أن تهرما
Hasten thy youth before thou growest old
اصبر على الظلم ولا تنتصر
Bear injustice and refrain from taking revenge
إذا أعطى القليل فتى شريف
When the noble youth gives little
فلو كان يستغني عن الشكر ماجد
If Majid could have done without thanks
طويت عوار الشيب من فرط قبحه
You concealed the ugliness of old age
أيا من تدعي شتمي سفاها
Oh you who claims to revile me foolishly
تعصي الإله وأنت تظهر حبه
You disobey God while professing your love for Him
مضى أمسك الماضي شهيدا معدلا
Your yesterday passed away, amended and a martyr,
وما صاحب السبعين والعشر بعدها
The owner of seventy and the decade has not passed
مازلت أغرق في الإساءة دائبا
Still I keep offending constantly
ولم أر مثل الفقر أوضع للفتى
I have not seen poverty debase a man like fortune uplift a fool
ألا لا مرحبا بفراق ليلى
No welcome to parting with Layla
ليس شيء مما يدبره العاقل
There is nothing the wise man undertakes
يا أيها الطالب من مثله
Oh seeker from the like of him
ركبوا المراكب واغتدوا
Embark the ships and set forth
إني إذا ملكت قوت غد
When I have enough for tomorrow’s bread
قطع الدهر بأسباب العلل
Time has cut off the causes of infirmities
دع الرياء لمن لج الرياء به
Leave ostentation to those who are obsessed by ostentation
كن مع الله يكن لك
With God be thou, He will be with thee
من كان ذا مال كثير ولم
He who has ample wealth and still is greedy, is the destitute though he seems the rich.
فما أهل الحياة لنا بأهل
The people of this life are not our people,
يحب الفتى طول البقاء وإنه
The young man loves longevity, yet he
من يشتري قبة في الخلد عالية
Who will buy a dome in eternity, lofty
مني السلام على الدنيا وبهجتها
My peace be upon the world and its joys
إني أحبك حبا لا لفاحشة
I love you with a love devoid of any wickedness
لا تطل الحزن على فائت
Do not prolong sorrow for what is past
اشتعل الشيب فأفنيته
The grey hair blazed, so I removed it,
لا تتبع الدنيا وأيامها
Do not pursue this world and its days,
أيا عجبا كيف يعصي الإله
Oh, what a wonder, how can one disobey God?
لا تحسدن أخاك وارع
Do not envy your brother, friend
القول ما صدقه الفعل
Words not confirmed by deeds,
لقد رأيت الصغير من عمل الخير
I have seen the small good deed rewarded beyond measure
ليس يعتاض باذل الوجه في الحاجة
He who offers his face in time of need
إذا أعطاك قتر حين يعطي
When he gives a little, he gives grudgingly
أفدني فعلمك مستظرف
Enlighten me, for your knowledge is admirable,
قل لهارون إن حللت
Tell Haroun if he is pleased
يا عامر الدنيا على شيبه
O world-builder in your old age,
اصدق حديثك إن في
Speak the truth in your words
لا يحسن النسك والشباب
Neither devotion nor youth become piety,
وكم من مريض نعاه الطبيب
How often a doctor pronounced a patient beyond all hope -
إن العيون على القلوب شواهد
Eyes are witnesses over hearts,
لا ينفع الجد والتشمير والحذر
Effort and toil and care avail me naught,
وفق الله عاقلا قدر العيش
May God grant success to one who is wise and plans ahead
هواك ولا تكذب عليك أمير
Your love, I do not lie to you my prince
أمن بعد ستين تبكي الطلولا
After sixty, does the night still weep
لا تحمدن أخا حرص على سعة
Do not praise a greedy brother with abundant wealth
إذا أنت لم ينفعك علمك لم تجد
If your knowledge does not benefit you, you will not find
قال علي بن أبي طالب
Ali ibn Abi Talib said,
يقطع كف القاذف المفتري
It cuts off the slanderer's impudent hand,
يهوى البقاء وإن مد البقاء له
He yearns for immortality, though immortality prolongs for him
أليس عجيبا بأن الفتى
Is it not strange how the young man
وغادروك بلا أصل ولا طرف
They left you with no root or branch,
تلذذت في الدنيا بكل طريفة
You enjoyed every vain thing in the world,
فلا تهجر أخاك بغير ذنب فإن
Do not abandon your brother without cause
ما أفضح الموت للدنيا وزينتها
How death exposes the vanity of this world and its adornments
لعمرك ما يدري الفتى كيف يتقي
By your life! The youth knows not how he may guard himself
أيها النادب الشباب الذي قد
O you who blame youth
لا يغلبنك غالب الحرص
Let not the victor of greed overcome you
تحر من الطرق أوساطها
Seek the middle path through life's journeys,
تنكب بنيات الطريق وجورها
The road's structures slant and twist,
أتطلب رزق الله من عند غيره
Do you seek God's provision from other than Him
كفلت لطالب الدنيا بهم
You burdened the seeker of this world with prolonged worries that do not end,
لا تلتمس من مساوي الناس ما ستروا
Do not seek from people what they have concealed
إذا ما الشيب جار على الشباب
When grey hairs impose on youthful locks
من ظن بالله خيرا جاد مبتدئا
Whoever thinks good of Allah, He will be generous from the start
تعز بحسن الصبر عن كل هالك
With patience's beauty spared from all demise
الدهر لا يبقى على حاله
Time does not remain still
غنى النفس يغنيها إذا كنت قانعا
Contentment of the soul enriches it if you are satisfied,
أيها الشيخ المعلل
O wise old man
عجبت من هارب يخاف من النار
I'm astonished by one who flees from the fire
يا أيها الظالم في فعله
O you who are unjust in your deed
هي الدنيا فلا يغررك منها
This is the life, so do not be deceived
قائد الغفلة الأمل
The leader of heedlessness is hope
كذبت ومن يكذب فإن جزاءه
You lied, and he who lies, his recompense
اصطبح كأس شراب
Awaken with a cup of drink
كفاك بالشيب ذنبا عند غانية
Gray hairs are sin enough with a singing girl,
التيه مفسدة للدين منقصة
Wandering corrupts religion, flaws the mind,
يا رب مال لغير من جمعه
O Lord, wealth for someone other than its accumulator,
تكثر من الإخوان ما اسطعت إنهم
Brothers abound when fortune smiles on you, pillars of support should you need their help. But fair-weather friends are no match for a single foe when fortunes change and trials begin.
سألزم نفسي الصفح عن كل مذنب
I will compel myself to forgive every sinner
يا نفس خوضي بحار العلم أو غوصي
O soul, plunge into the sea of knowledge, or dive deep,
الحرص عون للزمان على الفتى
Greed aids time in subduing the youth,
أغار إذا دنت من فيك كأس
I grow jealous when a cup draws near your lips,
أراني في انتقاص كل يوم
I see myself diminishing day after day
إن ظني بحسن عفوك يا رب
My hope in Your gracious pardon, O Lord
أما عجب أن يكفل الناس بعضهم
How strange that people guarantee each other
كم إلى كم أنت للحرص
How long will you strive
إن السؤال فعد عنه قليله
Asking questions, though little, still has a price
بشر البخيل يكاد يصلح بخله
The miser is almost reformed by good news
تصوف فازدهى بالصوف جهلا
He wore Sufi garb, foolishly feigning piety,
إذا كنت في بلدة جاهلا
When in a town of ignorance you are
تراضينا بحكم الله فينا
We have acquiesced to God's judgment of us
إني رأيت الصبر خير معول
I saw patience as the best support
لا تسه عن أدب الصغير
Rebuke not a child for his play
ومنتصح يكرر ذكر نشوى
And an advisor who repeats the mention of anguish
أيها الفارس المشيح المغير
O knight who roams with purpose so dire
اسعد بمالك في الحياة فإنما
Be content with what you own in life, for only
تلقى الفتى يلقى أخاه وخدنه
The lad meets his brother and bosom friend
ألا رب ذي أمل كاذب
Alas, for every vain hopeful
سقيا لأيام تولت بها
A drink for days gone by,
ابيض مني الرأس بعد سواده
My head turned white after once being black,
أسرع في نقص امرئ
The perfection of a man is hastened by exposing his faults,
سأمنح مالي كل من جاء عافيا
I will give my wealth to all who come in good health
فكرت في المال وفي جمعه
I thought of wealth and of hoarding it
إلهي لك الحمد الذي أنت أهله
My God, to You belongs all praise that You deserve
هاك الدليل لمن أراد
Wealth that endures without money
يا خاضب الشيبة نح فقدها
O you who dye gray hair, give it up, for you only shroud it in a winding sheet.
أأنثر درا بين سارحة النعم
Shall I scatter pearls among the carefree people?
لما طوتك الأربعون
When forty years enfolded you
الصبر أمضى سلاح ذي الأرب
Without thorns the rose would not bloom
إذا اعتصم الوالي بإغلاق بابه
When the governor shuts his door
أعطيت كل الناس من نفسي الرضا
I have given satisfaction to all people from my soul
شيئان لو بكت الدماء عليهما
قدر الله كائن
أظهروا للناس نسكا
يا أيها المتعب بزل الجمال
سأترك هذا الباب مادام إذنه
وما يبلغ الإنعام في النفع غاية
إذا ما دعوت الشيخ شيخا هجوته
لدوا للموت وابنوا للخراب
الليل شيب والنهار كلاهما رأسي
شمر ثيابك واستعد لقائل
يا من ترفع للدنيا وزينتها
دب في السقام سفلاً وعلوا
وراغب في العلوم مجتهد
إن القناعة ما علمت غنى
ما الدر منظوما بأحسن من
ألم تعلم فداك أبي وأمي
قدم لنفسك توبة مرجوة
مكرم الدنيا مهان
يمثل ذو اللب في نفسه
زينت بيتك جاهدا وشحته
كل من حل سر من را من الناس
حتى تبدى الصبح يتلو الدجى
قيامة من مات في موته
علام يشقى الحريص في طلب الرزق
لست ممن يماذق الصاحب الودد
رأيت صلاح المرء يصلح أهله
لا تلح شيبي وما شاهدت من كبري
شغلنا بكسب العلم عن مكسب الغنى
وإذا مرضت من الذنوب فداوها
شاد الملوك حصونهم وتحصنوا
الصدق منجاة لأربابه
أتفرح أن ترى حسن الخضاب
إذا ما انتسبت إلى آدم
إذا الكرى ذر في أجفاننا سنة
لعمري لئن غال صرف الزمان
تمتع بمالك قبل الممات
ذممتك أولا حتى إذا ما
إذا ما ازددت في عمري صعودا
دار الصديق إذا استشاط تغضبا
كتمت الهوى حتى إذا نطقت به
يا ناظرا يرنو بعيني راقد
من أطلق الطرف اجتنى شهوة
دجاج أبي عثمان أبعد منظرا
كم قد رأيت مساءة
صاحب اليسر يرقب العسر والمعسر
فإن تك حمى الغب شفك وردها
اغتنم غفلة المنية واعلم
وكنت أخي أيام عودك يابس
فاجاك من وفد المشيب نذير
إذا كان شكري نعمة الله نعمة
أراني إذا ما ازددت مالا وثروة
العلم بحر عميق لا قرار له
إذا أروت الأرض أسيافهم
ومازلت أسمع أن النفوس
أيها المغرور مهلا
سيد طال وما في
رجعت على السفيه بفضل حلم
أرى دهرنا فيه عجائب جمة
لا تطلبن أثرا بعين
لم أبك من خبث خل
أيها الشيخ كم تروم وتبني
أقام عن المسير وقد أثيرت
اسأل العرف إن سألت كريما
أخاف على المحسن المتقي
لا تشعرن قلبك حب الغنى
أتاني عنك ما ليس
لبست صروف الدهر كهلا وناشئا
شكر الإله نعمة
أبقيت مالك ميراثا لوارثه
فلا تجزع وإن أعسرت يوما
إني شكرت لظالمي ظلمي
