1. How long will you strive
And be a slave to hopes?
١. كَم إِلى كَم أَنتَ لِلحِر
صِ وَلِلآمالِ عَبدُ
2. Striving is futile
When fate does not help.
٢. لَيسَ يُجدي الحِرصُ والسّع
يُ إِذا لَم يَكُ جَدُّ
3. What God has decreed
Cannot be reversed.
٣. ما لِما قَدَّرَه اللَ
هُ مِنَ الأَمرِ مَرَدُّ
4. Misfortune comes,
And good fortune too.
٤. قَد جَرى بِالشَرِّ نَحسٌ
وَجَرى بِالخَيرِ سَعدُ
5. People follow their fate,
Before and after.
٥. وَجَرى الناسُ عَلى جَر
يِهِما قَبلُ وَبَعدُ
6. Trust not in fate,
For fate betrays.
٦. أَمِنوا الدَهرَ وَما لِلد
دَهرِ وَالأَيّامِ عَهدُ
7. Their striving was in vain,
Their hopes all lost.
٧. غالَهُم فَاِصطَلَمَ الجَم
عَ وَأَفنى ما أَعَدّوا
8. This life ebbs and flows,
Do not be misled.
٨. إِنَّها الدُنيا فَلا تَح
فِل بِها جَزرٌ وَمَدُّ
