ألا ليت عيشا أولا كر راجعا
Alas! Would that life might return as it began
أقول لها والصبح قد لاح ضوءه
I see the dawn's light as it shines bright
باذل عرسه لنا بطعام
He offers us his wedding feast with food
غلط الدهر بما أعطاكم
Time has erred in what it gave you all
أما ترى أعين النوار ناظرة
Don't you see the eyes of the wildcat staring
وصاحب زرته فقدم لي
A friend who visited me
وإذا جفاني صاحب
When a friend forsakes me
أرى الأعياد تتركني وتمضي
I see the holidays leave me and pass
أصبحت بين معاشر هجروا الندى
I dwell among people who have abandoned kindness
عش فحبيك سريعا قاتلي
Live, so my love for you kills me quickly
يا من بعدت عن الكرى ببعاده
Oh companion in remoteness from the settlements
غنت فهاجت حربي
Her singing set my passions aflame
دعوت فأقبلت ركضا إليك
I heard your call and hastened, running to you
يا أم طارق ليل قد ألم بنا
O mother of Tariq in the dark night that has befallen us
مثل الذي يرجو البلوغ
Like one who hopes to reach the stars
أنا في قوم أعاشرهم
I live among a people
ناديت عمرا وقد مالت بجانبه
I called out to life when by my side
لا يبعد الله إخوانا لنا سلفوا
God does not remove our brethren who passed before
وغيث درور المقلتين كأنما
I have translated the poem from Arabic to English while preserving the poetic style:
يقولون زرنا واقض واجب حقنا
They say: Visit us and fulfill our rights
لنا يا أخي زلة وافره
We have, my brother, abundant error
لي من تذكري المطيره
My rainy memories have
دخلت على باخل مرة
Once I entered a miser's abode
يطول علي الليل حتى أمله
The night seems endless until I grow weary of it
أنا ابن أناس مول الناس جودهم
I am the son of people whose generosity has captivated people
وآفة التبر ضعف منتقده
The vice of virtue is the weakness of its critic
وبات يسقينا جنانية
He waters us with paradise springs
وشققت من جدي البخيل إهابه
I split the reluctant's generous robe,
إذا ما ظمئت إلى ريقه
When I thirst for his saliva
أبن لي كيف أمسيت
Tell me how was your evening
الله يعلم أنني لك شاكر
God knows that I am grateful to you
قالت أعاليه الصلب
The lofty hills said
قد قلل الإدمان أكلي فما
Addiction has reduced my food intake, so
وقائلة ما دهى ناظريك
You said, What blinds your eyes?
دعيني من العذل أين الكبير
Let me weep for glory now withdrawn
قد زارني اليوم نور عيني
The light of my eyes visited me today,
أبا فرج أهجى لديك ويعتدى
Abu Faraj, I am maligned with you, while
يقول لي يوما وقد جئته
One day he'll say to me, I've reached
قدم لي أعظم حولية
He offered me the finest peach
إليك أبا إسحاق مني رسالة
To you Abu Ishaq I send a message
كأن بقاء الويل في جنباتها
As if the wretched one's life remaining in her sides,
مددت يدي يوما إلى فرخ باخل
I reached out my hand one day to a miser's chick
إن كنت تهوى أن أزورك
If you wish I visit you, or yearn for my presence,
لي صديق طرقته يوم جمع
A friend whose path I crossed one feast day
سقيا لأشموني ولذاتها
A drink to its orchards and pleasures
وليل في كواكبه حران
A night whose stars are in turmoil
لنا صاحب من أبرع الناس في البخل
We have a friend, the most skilled of men in stinginess,
قل للشقي وقعت في الفخ
Tell the wretch, you have fallen into the trap
لا تعذلوني إن هجرت طعامه
Do not blame me if I avoid his food
أسهرت للبرق الذي
You stayed up late for the lightning
زارني خائفا وقد جثم الليل
He came to me fearful, as the night
وقائل قال لي من أنت قلت له
A speaker asked me, "Who are you?"
قل للوزير أدام الله دولته
Tell the minister whose reign God prolong
شبيهك يا مولاي قد حان أن يبدو
Your likeness, o my master, it is time for it to appear
أطعمني بيضة وناولني
He fed me an egg, and after
قد بدا لي الصبح يا مولاى
The dawn has begun to break, my love
أظهرت في التطفيل ما لم يكن
You revealed in parasites what minds don't know
إذا ذكر الناس التطول أرعدت
When people mention arrogance, I tremble
وليس بتزويق اللسان وصوغه
It is not by adorning speech and versifying,
لا تعدن للزمان صديقا
Do not count time as a friend
قدم سكباجة مزورة
He offered a fake glass
فديت من مر بنا مسرعا
I sacrificed for one who passed us hastily
يا كاذبا في وعده بلسانه
Oh you who breaks his promises with his tongue
وعود يهيج الشجو طيب رنينه
Promises that stir melancholy, sweet is their resonance
حصلت على حكاية من يغني
I got a story from one who sings
تذلل لمن إن تذللت له
Humble yourself before those who, should you humble yourself to them,
بأبي الصقر علينا
By my father the falcon above us
إذا الشهر هل ولا رزق لي
When the month ends and I have no provision,
إلا الدقيق فإنه قوت لنا
Nothing but flour, for it is our staple food,
وما لي حق واجب غير أنني
I have no right that's due except that I
وانصرفنا لما تغنت عطاشا
When we left as the cups had sung dry of thirst
حسبي ضجرت من الأدب
I'm tired of etiquette,
لم يبلغ الشيخ إبليس إرادته
The old man did not attain what he desired
أحسن من قهوة معتقة
Better than aged coffee,
أنت امرؤ شكري له واجب
You are a man I must thank
وبالحيرة لي يوم
With distress I have a day
إذا ما البخيل ثوى في الثرى
When the miser is laid beneath the sod
فلا تيأس وإن صحت
So do not despair, even if their resolve
تبرم إذ جئته للسلام
He frowned at my greetings of peace,
ولي صاحب زرته للسلام
A friend of mine, I visited to greet
كان الكرام وأبناء الكرام إذا
The generous were, whenever they heard
قد دعانا فأرانا
He called us, so he showed us
أنفق ولا تخش إقلالا فقد قسمت
Spend without fear of poverty, for providence
أبا جعفر لا تنال العلا
Abu Ja'far, you will not attain glory
صادت جميع الناس أجفانك
The eyelids of all people have closed to you,
يا ربيعي زارني بعدك البدر
My spring, after you left, winter came
سالت الله تعميرا طويلا
I asked God for a long life
صديق لي له أدب
A friend of mine, of impeccable manners
فإن يك عن لقائك غاب وجهي
Though my face is absent in our meeting
يا راقدا ونسيم الورد منتبه
O sleeper, the rose breeze awakens
أيها المالحان بالله جدا
O sailors, for God's sake steer carefully,
سلام على تلك الطلول الدوائر
Peace upon those circling heights
ركبت أطوف في الجانبين
I rode around, touring both sides,
سلام عليكم من شييخ مقوس
Greetings to you from a bent old man
ما بال أيلول يدعوني وأتبعه
Why does September call me and I follow
جرت نوب الأيام بيني وبينه
The days have passed between us
إذا كانت صلاتكم رقاعا
If your prayers are but empty words
أي شيء رأيت أعجب من ذا
What thing have you seen more strange than this
عاتبت نفسي في هواك
I reproached myself for loving you,
وخمارة من بنات القسوس
A veiled girl from the daughters of chiefs
نروح ونغدو منك في ظل نعمة
We depart from you and return in the shade of your bounty
متى يلتقي الميت والغاسل
When will the dead meet the washer
بأبي من زارني مكتتما
By the one who visited me hiding,
بأبي الزائر الذي
By my father, who's absence
أيعذب من بعد ابن حمدون مشرب
Does pure drink now cause pain, after the son of Hamdun is gone?
ضاقت علي وجوه الرأي في نفر
The faces of opinion have narrowed for me among people
وذي جدة طلبت إليه برا
I asked a man of dignity for some kindness
يا قوم من لي بنعلي
O people, who will find my shoes for me
ولي كبد لا يصلح الطب سقمها
My heart is sick beyond the doctor's cure,
ولا عن رضا كان الحمار مطيتي
Nor was the donkey my chosen ride
واها لأيام الشباب
Alas for the days of youth
يا أيها الركب الذين
O caravan whose parting
يجد الجليس إذا دنا
The companion finds, when he draws near,
خليلي الصبوح دنا الصباح
My friend, dawn is near, morning is approaching
أكلنا قريصا وغنى قريص
We ate a bun and the bun sang
فقلت لها بخلت علي يقظى
I told her: “You were stingy when I was awake,
قل لقوم ما فيهم من رشيد
Say to a people among whom there is no wise one,
قد أتى الطيلسان مستوعبا شكري
The mantle has come, all-encompassing,
وكأن صديق الورى
As if my friend of the world
وأراك تولع بالبياذق ساهيا
I see you crave the bayadiq, lost in thought
قد أسرفت في العذل مشغولة
She reproached me for neglecting her,
ولي صاحب لا قدس الله روحه
I had a friend, may God sanctify his soul
جاء الشتاء وما عندي له ورق
Winter has come and I have no garment for it
رحلتم فكم من أنه بعد حنة
You departed, how many sighs after yearning
لي صديق يقول للسائل المغتر
I have a friend who says to the insistent questioner:
أحاجيك ما قبر عديم ترابه
I ask you, what grave has dust devoid
أطال لك العمر رب السماء
May the Lord of the heavens prolong your life
هات اسقنيها قهوة بابلية
Bring me a cup of Babylonian coffee,
لقد عظمت صائبات الرزايا
Great afflictions have grown,
قد نلتم صحة ما نالها بشر
You have attained a wellbeing no mortal attained
لما حجبت بباب دارك
When I was shut out at your door,
وحانة بالعلث وسط السوق
A tavern amidst the filth in the middle of the market
ألا أيها البرق الذي صاب ودقه
Oh lightning flash that struck and rumbled loud
فقدت بابن دريد كل منفعة
When Ibn Dureid was gone, all benefit went too
رأت منه عيني منظرين كما رأت
My eyes saw in him two sights, as they saw
قل للذين تحصنوا من راغب
Say to those who seek refuge
الحمد لله ليس لي كاتب
Praise be to Allah, I have no scribe
ألا هل إلى دير العذارى ونظرة
Shall I make my way to the convent of virgins for a visit
يا من دعاني وفر مني
O you who called me and then fled from me,
ذراني من ملامكما ذراني
Leave me be from your blame, leave me be
مرضت فلم يعدني في شكاتي
I fell ill, and none of my brothers, generous and abundant, visited me in my sickness.
سقيا ورعيا للجزيرة موطنا
Watering and grazing the island my home
يا سائلي بأميرنا
O questioner about our prince,
جانبت أطيب لذتي وشرابي
I have abandoned the sweetest of my joys and drink
سقيا ورعيا لدير الزندورد وما
Watered and grazed in the monastery of Zindaward
تساوى الناس في فعل المساوي
People are equal in their acts of depravity
ما زارني في الحبس من نادمته
None who I yearned for visited me in my prison
لي صديق مغرى بقربي وشدوي
I have a friend enamored by my company and delight
قد نادت الدنيا على نفسها
حبيب جاد لي بالريق
ويح نفسي عهدي بها في التراقي
رب قد ضاقت النفوس
وصاحب إن جئته قاصدا
يقول لي مالكي والدمع منحدر
لقد مات إخواني الصالحون
سجدنا للقرود رجاء دنيا
وأهل القرى كلهم ينتمون
نأيت فلم ينأ عنه الضنى
لقد أصبحت في بلد خسيس
لا تصغ للوم إن اللوم تضليل
قلت لما رأيته في قصور
ما أنصفتني يد الزمان ولا
أرى الأيام تضمن لي بخير
ماذا ترى في جدي
البحتري أبو عباده
وأمنتني ثم عاقبتني
طوبى لمن يشبع من خبزكم
وعدن بقرقار الهدير كأنما
ورق الجو حتى قيل هذا
أرى إلارجاف متصلا بندل
قالوا قميصك مغمور بآثار
ومر الغلام بتركه من مزجه
وقائلة لي كيف حالك بعدنا
لا تنكرني على حمار
لو مر بالأعمى لأب
فلو أن في جزعي راحة
سألته حويجة تمرضا
يا رب إن الشكوك قد علقت
دعاني صديق لي لأكل قطائف
إني رضيت من الرحيق
ولما كسرت له جردقا
ومن طاعتي إياه أمطر ناظري
يا لفظة البغي بموت الخليل
أليس من العجائب أن مثلي
أعزز علي بأن يشمك باخل
لا تعجبي يا هند من
ألا هل إلى الغدران والشمس طلعة
أحب من الإخوان كل موات
من كان خادم مثلكم فجواده
لنا صاحب من أبرع الناس في
يا سعد إنك قد خدمت ثلاثة
يا نسيم الروض بالأس
يا طول شوقي إلى دير ومسطاح
مرضت فلم يكن في الأرض حر
مالي وللشاب وأولاده
لست أدري أين الفؤاد مقيما
يا ابن روحي فدتك روحي من الأسواء
وخل ودود دعاني وقد
رب خل طرقته للسلام
كم سألنا عن النذالة واللؤم
إن بالحيرة قسا قد مجن
رب فقير أعز من أسد
طرقنا بزوغى حين أينع زهرها
أحمد الله لم أقل قط يا بدر
وردنا بزوغى والغروب كأنها
ادفع ورود الهم عنك بقهوة
قد متع الله بالخريف وقد
تعجبت إذ رأتني فوق مكسور
وجماعة نشطت لشرب مدامة
