1. He called us, so he showed us
Singing girls behind a lute,
١. قَد دَعانا فَأَرانا
خُنفُساةً خَلفَ عودِ
2. And she sang from her standing
Like a singer from her sitting.
٢. وَتَغَنَّت مِن قيامٍ
كَالمغنّي مِن قُعودِ
3. I said to the chamberlain when
He pushed me away with his effort
٣. قُلتُ لِلحاجِبِ لَمّا
رَدَّني عَنهُ بِجُهدِه
4. And pretended that he had slept
From his constant toil,
٤. وَتَأَلّى أَنَّهُ قَد نا
مَ مِن إِدمانِ كَدِّه
5. "Did the Lord of the house sleep
Or did he sleep for his servant?"
٥. أَنُعاساً نامَ ربُّ البَي
تِ أَم نامَ لِعَبدِه
