١. أَيَعذُبُ مِن بَعدِ اِبن حَمدونَ مشرَبٌ
لَقَد كُدِّرَت بَعد الصَفاءِ المَشارِبُ

Poisonous desert creatures crept toward us.
٢. أُصِبنا بِهِ فَاِستَأسَدَ الضَبعُ بَعدَهُ
وَدَبّت إِلَينا من أُناسٍ عَقارِبُ
3. The face of Time soured after he left us;
From whatever way you approached, its look was grim.
٣. وَقُطِّبَ وَجهُ الدَهرِ بَعدَ وَفاتِهِ
فَمِن أَيِّ وَجهٍ جئتَهُ فَهوَ قاطِبُ
4. With whom can I force open the firmly barred door,
When the processions crowd against it someday?
٤. بِمَن أَلِجُ البابَ الشَديدَ حِجابُهُ
إِذا اِزدَحَمَت يَوماً عَلَيهِ المَواكِبُ
5. Through whom can I attain the farthest goals? Who, thanks to his fame,
Can acquire for me all I seek?
٥. بِمَن أَبلُغُ الغاياتِ أَم مَن بِجاهِهِ
أَنالُ وَأَحوي كلَّ ما أَنا طالِبُ
6. I have become, since his house is bereft,
A neighbor to its wall, and the stars seek refuge in me.
٦. فَأَصبَحتُ حِلفَ البَيتِ خَلفَ جِدارِهِ
وَبِالأَمرِ منّي يَستَعيذُ النَجائِبُ
