1. Praise be to Allah, I have no scribe
Nor a guard at the door of my house

2. Nor a donkey when I decide to ride
It is said a scrawny one is riding

3. Nor a shirt that would serve as a replacement
For fear of my shirt being lost

4. And the rent of the house makes sore
My eyelids with pouring rain

5. If a friend visits me, I decide
To sell a book for a bite for my friend

6. I have lived among people whom
I tolerate by Allah’s command

7. Among them a friend whose wedding is wondrous
If you look into it, it is wondrous

8. You would think her a free woman yet her ankles
Are smoother than the writing of Khalid the scribe
