أقول لشادن في الحسن فرد
I say to Shadin, unique in beauty
لنا صديق يجيد لقما
We have a friend who excels at harm
أصبحت من رأيت في جنه
Roses are red, violets are blue, I only output poems, nothing else I'll do
لا قضى الله ببين
God has not decreed separation
تصوغ لنا كف الربيع حدائقا
Spring's hand crafts for us gardens
أقول له وقد مزجت جفوني
I say to him, while my eyelids intermix
شكوت إليه ما ألاقي فقال لي
I complained to him of what I was going through, so he said to me:
يشيد العاقل أقواله
The wise man builds his words
هبك ابتليت بفقر
You have been tried with poverty
نوى لي بعد إكثار السؤال
After asking much, a beloved promised gifts to me
شيخ لنا دب إلى شادن
An elder crept to our Shadan
يا من يدير نرجسا
Roses in your fading cheeks
تقصيرك الذيل حقا
Your shortcoming is truly
أوصاك ربك بالتقى
Your Lord has commanded you to be mindful
ما لليالي ولي كأن لها
What nights are to me, as if for them
قد أبى لي خضاب شيبي فؤاد
My henna'd locks refused to hide my heart's grief
أمران يعيا بهما ذو الحجى
Two things that bring misery to men of wisdom -
وما ضم شمل الأنس يوما كنرجس
Never has the company of friends gathered me like a narcissus
أراني كلما فاخرت قوما
Whenever I boast to a tribe
يا ذا الذي أرسل من طرفه
O you who sent towards me
الخالدي بخيل
Al-Khalidi is miserly
ونبئتها يوما ألمت بجنة
One day I reported to her when she strolled in a park
كم والد يحرم أولاده
How many a parent denies his children
حوى القد عمرا فقلت اعتقد
The days have harbored a life, so I said: Be content
خير ما استظرف الفوارس طرف
The best that knights can glimpse is a glance
يا مبتلى بضناه يرجو رحمة
O afflicted one hoping for mercy
كتبت إليه أستهدي وصالا
I wrote to him seeking reunion
شافه كفي رشأ
My hands she lightly sprayed
عذيري من رام رماني بسهمه
My excuse for one who shot me with his arrow
إذا لم تكن لمقال النصيح
If my advice finds in you
وقائلة إن المعالي مواهب
A woman said that glory is a gift
مصيب مواقع التدبير ظلت
The strikes of destiny's domains remained
كأن الشرار على نارنا
The sparks are like fire upon our fire
إن كنت تأنس بالحبيب وقربه
If you find comfort in the beloved and his nearness
ما لليالي رمتني
Why have the nights struck me
وحياة من أصفي هواي له
A life where I pursue my passion in solitude
مبدع في شمائل المجد خيما
A tent of glory's attributes he's pitched
يشقى الفتى بخلاف كل معاند
The youth suffers unlike any stubborn opponent
لئن قعد الزمان بكل حر
Though time may favor ignorance and wrong,
وشادن أصبحت أربا به
And the nightingales have become captives of his love
ومعشوق يتيه بوجه عاج
A beloved lost in an ivory face
ولما تتابع صرف الزمان
When the course of time brought changes,
لنا صديق إن رأى
We have a friend, if he sees
إني تغديت صدر يومي
I broke my fast at dawn one day
جامل الناس في المعاش
Be gentle with people when together
يا مهديا لي بنفسجا سمجا
O you who lead me to wilted violets
يا من يبيت محبه
O you who spend the night consumed with love of him
يصاب الفتى في أهله برزية
The youth is afflicted among his own with misfortune,
وكل غنى يتيه به غني
Every wealth that makes the wealthy lost
خالسته قبلة على ظمإ
I kissed his thirst
إذا ما جاد بالأموال ثنى
When he is generous with wealth, he repeats
هبه تغير حائلا عن عهده
Her gift changed, estranging their bond,
ربما أمتع القليل
Perhaps a little wealth suffices,
إني أرى ألفاظك الغرا
I see your precious words
وطلعة بقبحها قد شهرت
With an ugly dawn so infamous
أعددت محتفلا ليوم فراغي
I prepared a celebration for my day off
قد كان من زهرات العيش لي غصن
A branch of life’s flowers once bloomed for me
يا رب غصن نوره
O Lord, a branch whose light
أهلا بنرجس روض

إذا دهى خطب فآراؤه
When an orator's eloquence
خير ما استعصمت به الكف يوما
The best thing grasped by the palm one day
أخوك من إن كنت في
Your brother is he who, whether you are
يريد يوسع في بيته
He wants to expand his home
لنا مغن سمج وجهه
We have a silly singer whose face
أعدد زما ورد ليوم القرى
Prepare the wine for the day of sweet union
يا مهديا لي بنفسجا أرجا
O one who brings me fragrant violets
أراد أن يخفي هواه فقد
He wanted to hide his love, yet it was disclosed
أسير وقلبي في هواك أسير
I'm a captive, and my heart is captive to your love
إن لا أكن بالحادثات ذا يد
If I have no control over events,
ومهفهف تهفو بلبب
With soft whispering winds blowing through the heart
يا من دهاه شعره
O you whose cheek is graced
إن لي في الهوى لسانا كتوما
Though love's fire still burns within my heart
لئن أنت ناصرت بدر الدجى
Though you helped the full moon rise in the gloomy dark,
وكم حاسد لي انبرى فانثنى
How many envious haters have attacked me, then recoiled,

A specter who astonishes those who see him,
ويح جسمي من غزال
My body yearns for a gazelle
إن الذي رهن الفؤاد قتولا
He who has pledged his heart unto death,
لا تصبحن بالحياة ذا ثقه
Do not be so confident in this life,
ظبي يحار البرق عن بريقه
A gazelle, lightning shies from its brilliance
ماذا عليه لو أباح ريقه
What if he let flow his saliva
للأقحوان على ملاحته وخز
With melancholy in his voyage and disappointed love,
صدف الحبيب بوصله
My beloved came with his affection,
وما المرء في دنياه إلا كهاجع
In this world a man is but a sleeper
يا راكبا أضحى يحث مطيه
O rider who hastens his steed at dawn
من لي بشمل المنى والأنس أجمعه
Who will bring me the fullness of intimacy and companionship,
عيرتني ترك المدام وقالت
She blamed me for abandoning wine and said,
رب جنين من جنى النمير
Many an embryo was picked from the garden of flowers
أهلا بظبي حماه قصر
A greeting to a gazelle protected by a palace
ألفاني الدهر لما مسني حجرا
Time abraded me until a stone it made,
لا تطغ في حال الثراء
In times of wealth do not be vain
ووقضيب من بنات ال
With a staff made of honey bees' daughters in the palm of hardship
يا من غدا في الجمع يتعب نفسه
O you who toils in the crowds to tire himself
أتركض في ميادين التصابي
I run in arenas of delusion
كتبت وليلي بالسهاد نهار
I wrote while my night was daybreak
وسائلة تسائل عن فعالي
A questioner asks about my deeds,
دهتنا السماء غداة النجاب
The sky rained upon us at dawn
نبت بك عن أوطان عزك غيبة
Your absence from your beloved homelands grew
أرى وصالك لا يصفو لآمله
I see our union brings no peace to my hopes
دع الحرص واقنع بالكفاف من الغنى
Abandon greed, and be content with sufficiency out of prosperity
وريم على السكر جمشته
A rose I compared his rosy cheek to,
أقول لشادن في الحسن فرد
I tell Shādīn, unparalleled in beauty,
يا من يقول الشعر غير مهذب
O you who recite poetry without refinement
أبا جعفر هل فضضت الصدف
O Abu Ja'far, have you broken the pearl shells
لي في دهستان لا جاد الغمام لها
In my country, no clouds bring rain,
وليل كإبهام القطاة معلق
And night hung like the paw of a cat
أمتع شبابك من لهو ومن طرب
Enjoy your youth with joy and delight
شكوت إليه الحب أبغي شفاءه
I complained of love to him, desiring his cure
أهدى صديق لي من جوين
A friend from Ghuwayn gifted me
يا غزالا بوجهه جدري
O gazelle with a face like the full moon
وغزال منحته خالص الود
A gazelle to whom I gave my true devotion
لقد طالت شهور الصيف حتى
The summer months have lingered long
كيف تنام العين بعد فراقهم
How can the eyes find sleep after their departure
واليوم عمري في الأعمار منقضب
And today my life among lives is perishing,
عهدناك بدرا تروق العيون
We knew you as a full moon that delights the eyes,
ظبي كسا رأسي المشبب بعارض
The gazelle bent my head adorned with tresses
عمر الفتى ذكره لا طول مدته
A young man’s life is his reputation, not his lifespan’s length,
يا جميل الظن بالأيام
O you of good thoughts of days
بنفسي غزال صار للحسن كعبة
With my soul a gazelle has become for beauty a Ka'aba
تعز عن الحرص تعزز به
Turn from greed, you grow strong by it
قد أتاني من صديق كلام
A message came to me from a friend
يا بؤس للدهر أي خطب
Alas, what calamity has befallen the era,
يا دهر ما أقساك يا دهر
O Time, how harsh you are, O Time
لي رفيق شهم الفؤاد يماني
I have a boon companion, courageous and true,
هل إلى سلوة وصبر سبيل
Is there a way to solace and patience?
شعرات قد ركبت في نصاب
Strands that were installed in a watering trough
يا سروري بنيل تحفة خل
O my joy, with an eloquent gift,
تفرق قلبي في هواه فعنده
My heart is torn apart in its love for him
غدوت بخيرة ورخاء حال
I awoke in comfort and prosperity,
ومن يسر فوق الأرض يطلب غاية
He who travels upon the earth seeking glory
رأيت الهلال وقد حلقت
I saw the crescent moon while
بأبي غزال نام عن وصبي به
By my father a gazelle slept away from her fawn
ألا رب أعداء لئام قريتهم
Many are the despicable enemies whose bellies
أبا بشر ذهبت بكل أنس
O Abū Bashr, you took away all our joy,
صل محبا أعياه وصف هواه
The lover persists though love's pain afflicts him,
جفون قد تملكها السهاد
Eyelids conquered by slumber,
يا من دعانا دعوة لم تتم
O You who called us to a call unfinished,
أحسن أيام الفتى
The finest days for a young man
يا شادنا غاب وجه الحسن لولاه
بليت بشادن أضحى فؤادي
أقيك بنفسي صرف الردى
بالأمس قد قال الحجى لي
بنفسي أخ قد برني بشكاته
أما حان أن تشفي المستهام
فإن لا ترحمي سقمي فردي
قال لمن يحلقه
ضاق ذرعي من هوى قمر
أودع قلبي غصة ناشبه
سباني غزال أطار الرقاد
لا تعصين شمس العلا قابوسا
أبا بشر فقدت لذيذ عيشي
تفاءلت للمولود في بطن مصحف
سقيا لدهر مضى والوصل يجمعنا
قام بلا عقل ولا دين
ضحى يروم غيلتي
يا من يعد لسانه
ألا ليت الركاب غدون وقفا
أتبغي باعتمادك ذخر أجر
عجبت لوغد قد جذبت بضبعه
كأن الشقائق إذ أبرزت
قل للغزال الذي صار
يا حبذا خبر الصدي
عذيري من جفون راميات
تمت محاسنه فما يزري به
أهدت جفونك للفؤاد
يا دار لا زلت بالخيرات آهلة
يا من يضيع عمره
ما دمت مالك مالك
لاح لي في الرياض نور الشقيق
أعددت ألوانا ليوم القرى
ما سبى عقلي المدام الرحيق
وأخ إذا ما شط عني رحله
كتبت وخطي من أذى السقم شاهد
أما ترى البركة الغراء قد لبست
ومهفهف غرس الجمال
تفرق الناس في أرزاقهم فرقا
وليل كلون الهجر وظلمة الحبر
وباخل يبدي لنا
لا تمنع الفضل من مال حبيت به
طلعة معشوق لديك حاضره
نثر السحاب على الغصون ذريرة
ارض من دنياك
سل الربيع على الشتاء صوارما
أخ لي أما الود منه فزائد
هو السؤل لا يعطيك وافر منة
تقنصني غزال شاب فيه
ذو الفضل لا يسلم من قدح
لقد راعني بدر الدجى بصدوده
مواعيده بالوصل أحلام نائم
أهلا بفجر قد نضا ثوب الدجى
أنكرت من أدمعي تترى سواكبها
كتبت إليك ولي مقلة
