مليك الناس ليس له شريك

The King of mankind has no partner

سميته بعلي كي يدوم له

I have named him Ali so he may inherit

أتعلم ملك الحبش أن محمداً

Does the King of Abyssinia know that Muhammad

لمن أربع أقوين بين القدائم

For whom are four strong men between pillars?

منعنا الرسول رسول المليك

The messenger prevented us, the messenger of the King

أوصي بنصر النبي الخير مشهده

I urge the support of the best Prophet's vision

منعنا أرضنا من كل حي

Our land we guarded from every living being

ألا ليت حظي من حياطة نصركم

Alas! Would that I had enjoyed the protection of your victory

عين ائذني ببكاء آخر الأبد

My eyes bid me weep till the end of time

لقد أكرم الله النبي محمداً

God has honored the Prophet Muhammad

تقول ابنتي أين أين الرحيل

My daughter asks, where, where is the departure?

وإن امرءا أبو عتيبة عمه

A man, uncle of Utba, verily

بكى طرباً لما رآني محمد

Muhammad wept out of joy when he saw me,

أيا أخوينا عبد شمس ونوفلا

O my two brothers Abd Shams and Nawfal

قل لمن كان من كنانة في العز

Tell those of Kenanah's kin who live in glory

أمن أجل حبل ذي رمام علوته

For the sake of a rope so frayed

إعلم أبا أروى بأنك ماجد

Know, O Abu Arwa, you are glorious

فقدنا عميد الحي فالركن خاشع

We have lost the pillar of the clan, so the pillar is grieving

ألا أبلغا عني لؤيا رسالة

Shall I not send to Lu'ayy a message

الحمد لله الذي قد شرفا

Praise be to Allah, who has honored

ألا من لهم آخر الليل معتم

Alas, who has sorrow at the end of night in darkness,

والله لن يصلوا إليك بجمعهم

By God, they will never reach you with their multitude,

ألا من لهم آخر الليل منصب

Alas! Who has deep sorrows in the late night,

خليلي ما أذني لأول عاذل

My friend, my ear refuses to listen

قل لعبد العزى أخي وشقيقي

Tell the servant of Al-'Uzza, my brother and close friend,

أرقت ودمع العين في العين غائر

I languished, and tears flooded my eyes,

يقولون لي دع نصر من جاء بالهدى

They say to me, "Leave the defense of him who brought guidance,

وخالي هشام بن المغيرة ثاقب

My uncle Hisham bin Mughirah, a sharp sword

إذا اجتمعت يوماً قريش لمفخر

Whenever Quraysh assemble for boasting

أمن تذكر دهر غير مأمون

Is it from recalling an uncertain past,

أبني طالب إن شيخك ناصح

My son, your mentor's advice is sincere

ألا هل أتى بحرينا صنع ربنا

Behold, has not our gulf been wrought by our Lord

ألم ترني من بعد هم هممته

Did you not see me after suffering griefs I endured

محمد تفد نفسك كل نفس

Muhammad, sacrifice yourself for every soul

حتى متى نحن على فترة

How long shall we remain inactive,

أفيقوا بني غالب وانتهوا

Wake up, O sons of Ghalib, and desist

إن الأمين محمداً في قومه

Indeed, the trusted one Muhammad among his people

تطاول ليلي بهم وصب

My night grew long with worries and wakefulness

أرقت وقد تصوبت النجوم

I lost sleep as the stars took aim

ألا أبلغا عني على ذات بيننا

Convey from me to her with whom I reproached,

عجبت لحلم يا ابن شيبة عازب

I am amazed, son of Shaybah, at the forbearance of an unmarried man,

ليت شعري مسافر بن أبي عمـرو

I wish I knew, oh traveller, son of Abi ‘Amr

ألا إن خير الناس حياً وميتاً

Behold! The best of men alive or dead

وعربة دار لا يحل حرامها

إن الوثيقة في لزوم محمد

أسبلت عبرة على الوجنات

أبكى العيون وأذرى دمعها درراً

سقى الله رهطا هم بالحجون

إذا قيل من خير هذا الورى

ألا أبلغ قريشاً حيث حلت

صبراً أبا يعلى على دين أحمد

فما رجعوا حتى رأوا من محمد

أنت النبي محمد

لا يمنعنك من حق تقوم به

إصبرن يا بني فالصبر أحجى

إن علياً وجعفراً ثقتي

وما كنت أخشى أن يرى الذل فيكم

بكيت أخا لأواء يحمد يومه

أنت الرسول رسول الله نعلمه
