1. My friend, my ear refuses to listen
To the first blamer, in truth or falsehood.

2. My friend, opinion is not partnership
Nor distraction in momentous affairs.

3. And when I saw the people bear no love
And they had severed all ties and means,

4. And they had declared enmity and harm to us
And obeyed the command of the hostile severer,

5. And they had allied with a people against us in anticipation
Biting their anger behind us with the sandals,

6. I was patient with them, with sublime patience
And white-hot anger from the legacy of trials.

7. So at the House I summoned my people and brothers,
Grasping its coverings by the ties,

8. Standing together facing his caravan
Where each pilgrim concludes his supererogations,

9. And where the noble riders rein in their mounts
At the open plains of Esaf and Na'il,

10. Slender of thigh or short of it,
Proud between competence and resolve.

11. You see the farewells therein, and terraces and adornments,
With their necks collared like prisoners.

12. I seek refuge in the Lord of men from every defamer
Speaking ill of us or insisting falsely,

13. And from a striker who seeks to defame us
And from one ascribing to the faith what we did not attempt,

14. And an enraged fool who pitched his tent in its place,
And a climber climbing barren hills and halt.

15. By the House, cornerstone of the House, from the valley of Mecca,
By God, God is not inattentive,

16. And by the Black Stone, as they touch it
When they circumambulate it at dawn and night,

17. And the footprint of Abraham in the rock
With his bare feet, unshod,

18. And the rounds between Safa and Marwa to Al-Safa
And the form and symmetry between the two,

19. Whoever performs pilgrimage to God’s House, of every rider
And every oath-taker and every walker,

20. And the Further Mosque, when they headed to it,
Sloping, to the open horizons of Esaf.

21. And their standing atop the mountains at night,
Propping up their chests on their palms,

22. And the night at Muzdalifa and the stations from Mina,
And the sanctity above them and dwellings,

23. And at the Jamarat, when the median ones allowed him passage,
Rushing out as rain pours from the clouds’ burst,

24. And the major cairn, when they surged toward it,
Pelting the top of it with pebbles.

25. And Kinda when at nightfall they raced their camels,
Among them the Hajj pilgrims of Bakr ibn Wa’il,

26. Two allies who tightened what they had pledged
And reciprocated the bonds of amity.

27. They routed them with the striking of lances amidst the antelopes
And relentlessness like that of a swooping eagle,

28. Their walking around Al-Bisal and Sarh,
Shibriq and the cheek of the bounding ostrich.

29. Is there safety after this for any seeker of refuge,
Or any protector who fears the Just God?

30. They claim we should obey the enemy and they wished that we
Close off for them the passes of Turk and Kabul,

31. You lie! By God’s House we will not leave Mecca
Or complain except at your command, confused.

32. You lie! By God’s House we will not insult Muhammad
Nor disobey him and dispute!

33. And we will not surrender him until we pour out around him
And neglect our children and wives.

34. And a people will rise against you with iron,
The rising of prisoners in shackles and chains,

35. Until the owner of the belly sees his she-camel return
From thrusting like a swooping vulture.

36. By my life, when what I foresee comes true,
Our swords will intertwine with their necks!

37. By the hand of a man like a shooting star—my brother Thiqa,
Guardian of truth, courageous and steadfast.

38. For months and days and a sacred year,
Plotting against us, then a proof comes after.

39. No people who denied you a master left
Encircling the leather bucket except as equals.

40. A white man whose face the clouds are asked to rain by,
Shelter of orphans, protector of widows.

41. The doomed seek refuge in him from the Hashimites,
For with him they are in mercy and grace.

42. By my life, Usayd and his band inclined
To hate us and rewarded us with ruin!

43. May ties of kinship reward Usayd and Khalid
The reward of an evildoer, hastened, not delayed!

44. As for Uthman, he did not lord it over us, and Qunfudh—
But they obeyed the command of those tribes.

45. They obeyed Ubayy and Ibn Abde Yaghuth willfully
Without heeding our situation.

46. As we experienced from Suhayb and Nawfal,
Each turned away, aloof, not affable.

47. If they are met or enabled by God against them,
We will repay them measure for measure!

48. As for Abu Amr, he refused anything but hating us
To subdue us among the people of Shay and Jamal.

49. He whispers about us morning and night,
So whisper, Abu Amr, about us, then dispute!

50. He swears by God he will not betray us,
Yes, we see him openly, nothing preventing!

51. Hatred of us has constricted him in every nook
Between Akhdhar and the disputants.

52. Ask Abu Al-Waleed, what did your efforts against us yield,
Turning away like one cut off?

53. You were a man whose opinion was lived by
And your mercy upon us, you were no ignoramus.

54. Utba, do not listen about us to any envious slanderer,
Malicious liar, hating, sowing discord.

55. I fear if you do not deter them and they run wild,
You and we will face one of the confusions.

56. As for Abu Sufyan, he passed me by aloofly
Like a herd of cattle from bones of carrion.

57. He flees to Najd and its cold waters
And claims I am not heedless of you.

58. I know no heedless one of harm
Suffices the enemy in truth and falsehood.

59. So turn against us altogether, your turning
Is equal to us, and the winds bring desolation.

60. The deeds of an advisor inform us he is
Compassionate, hiding the secret Lapses.

61. O Mut’im, did I not stand by you on the day of need
And at those momentous, majestic times?

62. Not on the day of dispute when the stubborn ones came to you,
Those skilled in contention against adversaries?

63. O Mut’im, the people have conspired against you
And whenever entrusted I do not neglect!

64. May God reward us from Abd Shams and Nawfal
The immediate punishment of evil, not delayed!

65. With the scales of justice that does not reduce a mustard seed,
For it the evidence of his soul is sufficient justice.

66. They were foolish whose people substituted
The sons of Khalaf for us and falsehoods!

67. We are the core of the Zubayrids of Hashim
And the family of Qusayy in early battles.

68. And we were the pool of drink for them,
We are the seed and above the shoulders.

69. They did not overtake Dahlan or shed blood
Or enter pacts except the evilest tribes.

70. The sons of a possessed Hindi maid,
Sons of Jumah, slaves of Qays ibn Aqil,

71. And arrows and Makhzum inclined and incited
Enmity against us from every harboring coward.

72. Freedmen of Manaf! You are the best of your people,
So do not include in your affair every complainer.

73. I fear if God does not set your affair right,
You become as were the stories of Wa’il.

74. By my life, you have been weakened and helpless
And come with an opinion missing the joints!

75. You were once kindling of the pot, but are now
Kindling of greater pots and stoves.

76. May the disloyalty and abandonment of
The sons of Abd Manaf gladden them!

77. If a people are made happy by what you have done,
You shall suckle it unweaned, not sterile!

78. Every friend and son of a sister we deemed
Good, we found, by my life, his absence no use!

79. Except some clan of Kalb ibn Murra,
Innocent to us from Maqata the betrayer

80. O Bani Asad! Do not blame the speck
If the saying of a speaker is not truth!

81. Best nephew of the people, correct, not denied,
Is Zuhayr, a drawn sword among the blades.

82. I scent from musk the anklets that belong
To noble lineage at the height of glory.

83. By my life, I have been burdened with love for Ahmad
And his brothers, habit of a constant loving friend.

84. I stand for the victory of the Prophet Muhammad,
I fight for him with spears and missiles.

85. So in the world remains a beauty for its people
And adornment for whoever God tries,

86. For who among the people is like him, what hopeful
When the rulers measure at competition?

87. Forbearing, rightly guided, just, not reckless,
Loyal to a God not heedless of him,

88. So the Lord of worshipers supported him with victory
And manifest a true religion without attachment.

89. By God, were it not that I would come back disgraced,
Dragged over our elders in the assemblies,

90. We would have followed him in any condition
Serious, not for mere pretense.

91. They know our son is not one to deny before them
Or heed the saying of lies.

92. Honorable men, not inclined to sin, raised
By noble fathers, magnanimous when ruptured.

93. We drove them off until their group dispersed
And every rebel and ignorant lamented.

94. Youth of the Tayyibun and Hashim
Like the gleam of swords in the hands of polishers.

95. With blows in which the young men seem
Like Egyptian lions over fragmented meat.

96. But we are an honorable seed of masters
By whom we surpass nations when competing.

97. The people of meanness will know which of us prevails
And is exalted on nights few.

98. And which of them and me with his sword
Meets when the time of concession draws near.

99. And who of them and me will tire of war
And be praised in the horizons by any speaker?

100. So Ahmad with us is in a loftiness
That falls short of him, Sura of the Grand.

101. I envision him above the steeds leading them
To a people gone astray into every falsehood.

102. I exerted myself below him and protected him,
Repelling from him with cutting swords.

103. No doubt God is elevating his affair
And raising him in life and the Day of Dispute.
