لقد قذفوا أبا وهب بأمر
They accused Abu Wahhab of a great thing
أرسلي بالسلام يا سلم إني
Send my greetings, O branch, for since
إسقني يا زيد صرفا
Quench my thirst, O Zayd, with a drink
ألا أبلغ أبا عثمان
Shall I not convey to Abu Uthman
أيا حكم المتبول لو كنت تعتزي
O foolish ruler, had you been related
أنا النذير لمسدي نعمة أبدا
I am the warner of those who abuse blessings forever
هل إلى أم سعيد
Is there to Um Sa'id
ولقد قال طبيبي وطبيبي
My doctor often told me
ألا يسليك عن سلمى
Does my fortune mock me now?
أنا الوليد أبو العباس قد علمت
I am Al-Walid, son of Abu Al-'Abbas, I have known
وصفت عندي سليمى
Suleima was described to me
لا أسأل الله تغييرا لما صنعت

طرق الخيال المعتري

قامت إلي بتقبيل تعانقني
She rose to me with a kiss embracing me
أنا ابن أبي العاصي وعثمان والدي
I am the son of Abu al-'Assi, and 'Uthman is my father,
إسقني يا ابن سالم قد أنارا
Give me drink, O son of Salem, now the morning star
عرفت المنزل الخالي
I knew the empty house
أحول كالقرد أو كما يرقب
I rove like an ape or as a thief peers out
أسعدة هل إليك لنا سبيل
Is there any way for us to be united, Sa'dah?
تلعب بالخلافة هاشمي
A Hashimite played with the caliphate
سليمى تلك في العير
O Suleima, in that caravan
طال ليلى فبت أسقى المداما
The night of Leila was long, so I passed it drinking wine,
إنني أبصرت شخصا حسن
I saw a person
فما مسك يعل بزنجبيل
No musk is made fragrant with ginger,
طاف من سلمى خيال
A phantom from Salma passed by
ألم تعلما سلمى أقامت بمهمه
Did you not know Salma erected a grave
لمن دمنة أقفرت بالجليل
For whom a footprint was left bare in the sand
خف من دار جيرتي
My friend disappeared from the neighbor's house
إذا لم يكن خير مع الشر لم تجد
If no good comes with harm, you'll find
قد جعلنا طوافنا بالدنان
We circumambulated the abode,
أنا ابن يزيد بن عبد الملك

أشهد الله والملائكة الأبرار

I love singing, sipping wine
ليت حظي اليوم من كل

هلك الأحول المشوم

كأن الحميم على جسمها
As if intimacy itself caressed her body
طرقتني وصحابي هجوع
A shy doe with friends alarmed,
نام من كان خليا من ألم
Name who was free from pain
فأقسم ما أدنيت كفي لريبة
I swear by all the deeds my hands have done,
أني سمعت خليلي
I heard my beloved
رأيتك تبني جاهدا في قطيعتي
I saw you building obstinately upon my estrangement
منازل قد تحل بها سليمى
Dwellings where Suleima once dwelled
يعزيني أبو وهب وليث
Abu Wahab and Layth console me
وصفراء في الكأس كالزعفران
Yellow in the cup like saffron,
وإن على شاطي الفرات لفتية
On the banks of the Euphrates are maidens
عوجا خليلي على المحضر
My friend, I yearn for the pastures
أقصرا عن ملامتي عاذليا
Spare me your blame, O blamer,
إذا مت يا أم الحنيكل فانكحي
If you die, O mother of separation, then marry,
أراني قد تصابيت وقد
I find myself turning away
عتبت سلمى علينا سفاها
Salma reproached me foolishly today
يا سلم كنت كجنة قد أطمعت
O Salma, you were like a garden whose bounty
أدر الكأس يمينا
Turn the cup gently to the right,
من مبلغ عني أبا كامل
Who will convey to Abu Kamil
يا من لقلب في الهوى متشعب
O you whose heart is infatuated with love
أم سلام لو لقيت من الوجد
O Umm Salam, if you meet a tribe from Wajd
ألا ليت أني منكم حيث كنتم
Wherever you may be, oh how I wish that I were there with you
إسقنا يا يزيد بالقرقاره
Give me to drink, O Yazid, from the gurgling jug
أبا عثمان هل لك في صنيع
Oh Abu Uthman, do you have a deed
ويح سلمى لو تراني
Alas, Salma, if you could see me
ضمنت لكم إن سلم الله مهجتي
If God keeps my mind sound
فإن تك قد مللت القرب مني
If you are bored of being close to me
قم فاسقني قبل أصوات العصافير
Rise up and pour me a drink before the birds start chirping,
عيني للحدث الجليل
My eyes for the momentous event
ألم تهتج فتدكر الوصالا
Did you not stir, then reminisce about our union,
سقيت أبا كامل
I gave Abu Kamil
تذكر شجوه القلب القريح
The heart recalled its anguish, the soul its grief
أليس عظيما أن أرى كل وارد
Is it not great that I see each newcomer
أضحى فؤادك يا وليد عميدا
Your heart, O Walid, has become a pillar,
سل هم النفس عنها
Ask the soul about its worries
وزق وافر الجنبين
With abundant provisions on either flank
عللاني بعاتقات الكروم
Entwine me with the vines' tendrils,
رب بيت كأنه متن سهم
Many a house is like the shaft of an arrow
شاع شعري في سليمى وظهر
My poetry spread in Sulayma and appeared
ألا أيها الركب المخبون أبلغوا
O caravan who have been grieved, convey
أتانا بريدان من واسط
Two couriers came to us from Wasit
ألا ليت الإله يحين سلمى
Oh my friend, if only God would return Salma
خبروني أن سلمى
They told me Salma went out
قد كنت أحسب أنني جلد القوى
I used to think I was strong
أنا الوليد الإمام مفتخرا
I am Al-Walid the imam, boasting
ولقد صدنا غزالا سانحا
طاب عيشي وطاب شرب المدامه
أتوعد كل جبار عنيد
يا أيها السائل عن ديننا نحن
ليت هشاما عاش حتى يرى
طاب يومي ولذ شرب السلافه
لقد أغدوا على أشق
قد راح نحو العراق مشخلبه
نزلت سلمى بقلبي
قد تمنى معشر إذ أطربوا
إصدع نجي الهموم بالطرب
إنما هاج لقلبي
ولقد مررت بنسوة أعشينني
ألما تعلما سلمى أقامت
ومن يك مفتاحا لخير يريده
أهينمة حديث أم هم
وجدت العيش يا سلمى
يا ويح جندي الألى خاروا وما نظروا
أتاني سنان بالوداع لمؤمن
من لقلب أمسى كئيبا حزينا
فلما أصاتت عصافيره
أراني الله يا سلمى حياتي
خذوا ملككم لا ثبت الله ملككم
ما لسلمى تجنبت
بلغا عني سليمى
إن كأس العجوز كأس رواء
على الدور التي بليت سفاها
سرى طيف ذا الظبي بالعاقدان
إمدح الكأس ومن أعملها
لا عيش إلا بمالك بن أبي السمح
حبذا ليلتي يدير بونا
