له قلم كقضاء الإلاه
He has a pen like the decree of God
لما تبدى الكوفي ينشدنا
When the fool from Kufa recited to us
ألا فاسترزق الرحمن خيرا
Come now, seek provision from the Most Merciful, doing good
خليلي إني للثريا لحاسد
My friend, I envy the Pleiades
حلقت سبالك جهلا بما
You cast your words in ignorance of what
فالكف عاج والحباب لآلئ
The palm is ivory and the seeds are pearls
يا بن فهد وأنت من ما نرانا
O son of Fahd, you are the best of what we see
ومدامة صفراء في قارورة
A golden liquor in a blue bottle,
رب يوم بوصلها ساعد الدهر
Many a day her company has helped pass the time away,
راح كضوء شهاب
Like the glow of a shooting star,
أنباك شاهد أمري عن مغيبه
My tears bear witness to my love though you are absent,
ما زاره الطيف بعد اليوم معتمدا
The phantom has not visited him since that day, relying
لو أن في فمه جمرا وأنشدنا
If coals of fire were in his mouth as he recited poetry to us,
يرى فيه إيماض السيوف كأنه
In it the glinting of swords can be seen, as though
بدا فأراك الشمس في الغصن النضر
The sun appeared to me in the green branch,
إن قيدته يد مشى ومتى خلا
If a hand binds it, it walks though burdened,
مهاة توهمها أم غزالا
Is she a deer imagined
فكم من روحة والشمس
How many a meadow with dusk yet to come,
وتطمح فواراتها فكأنها
And its springs gush forth as though they were
وإذا أردت ترى فضيلة صاحب
When you wish to see the merit of a friend
ألا فاسقني والليل قد غاب نوره
Quench my thirst, though the night has lost its light
دع العود محزونا يطيل بكاءه
Leave the mournful lute to prolong its weeping
عطلت دارسة المغاني
I neglected the study of songs
ترى البرية في حالي ندى وردى
The wilderness sees both dew and flowers
وأنحلني حتى لو أني بكفة
You have granted me grace until if I were weighed
روحي الفداء لظاعنين رحيلهم
My soul is ransom for those whose departure
يا معيري بالصد ثوب السقام
O you who mock my cloak of sickness
ببامخايال إن حاولتما طلبي
With my imagination if you seek me
لم يغد شكرك في الخلائق مطلقا
Your gratitude among creatures was never
قد طفح القلب بالهموم فإن
The heart is overflowing with worries, so if
وكم من عدو صار بعد عداوة
How many a foe, after enmity's ended,
فتكت فلا تأخذن من فتك
You broke my heart, so do not take from those you've broken
كأنما أنجم الثريا لمن
The stars of Thurayya seem to one
قلت لما بدا الهلال لعين
When the new moon rose into view
يا خليلي من عذيري من الدنيا
O my friend, who will defend me from this life
وأغيد روته المدامة فانثنى
The cupbearer has watered it with wine, and so it bent over
لفظ كخد يجتلى
Words like cheeks to be caressed
يا شبيه البدر حسنا
O you who resemble the full moon in beauty
مطرب الصبح هيج الطربا
The morning's troubadour awakened delight
لا تطنبن في بكاء النؤي والطنب
Do not over-lament the wailing of love songs and elegies,
واستمعها أرق من ورق الورد
Listen to it, softer than rose petals
ومعذورة في هجرها لجمالها
She is excused in her abandonment, for her beauty
دعا فؤادي للأسى وحده
My heart summoned sorrow alone
إن خانك الدهر فكن عائذا
If fate betrays you, take refuge in
فديت من زرعت في القلب لحظته
I ransomed the one whose glance planted
وما خلق الإنسان إلا لينطوي
Man was not created but to be afflicted
بأبي التي كتمت محاسنها
By my father, she who hid her charms
لا تحسبوا أنني باغ بكم بدلا
Do not think that I am hostile towards you or bear you any ill will
متوقد مترقرق عجبا له
Sparkling, flickering, how strange is he!
وأخ جفا ظلما ومل وطالما
A brother was unjust and turned away, after our love was long and true,
رب ليل فضحته بضياء الراح
Many a night whose darkness I have dispelled
كأني بهم إذ خالفوا بعض أمره
It is as if I see them when they disobeyed some of His command,
يا نفس موتي فقد جد الأسى موتي
O my soul, death has made my death severe
ألست ترى الظلام وقد تولى
Do you not see the darkness as it departs
تتيه كبرا ولكن
She wanders greatly but
ألست ترى التل يبدي لنا
Don't you see the hills showing us
هو الفجر قابلنا بابتسام
He is the dawn who greeted us with a smile
وزعفرانية في اللون والطيب
Saffron-hued in color and fragrance
هو يوم كما تراه
It is a day as you can see
أيا عمرو يا بن العلى والحسب
O Amro, O son of nobility and pedigree,
يا سيدا بالعلا والمجد منفردا
O master, peerless in glory and honor,
حيا الحيا دمن العقيق وإن عفت
The friend revived life from bloody carnage though it was fading away,
وأخ رخصت عليه حتى ملني
I granted my brother favors until I grew weary,
ولقد تلقيت الصباح بمثله
I greeted the morning in the same way
وإن بدت الستور لنا رأينا
Though we unveil the veils we yet will find
رق ثوب الدجى وطاب الهواء
The robe of dusk has softened and the air grew sweet,
لا وجفون تنوس في العقد
No eyelids grow weary in the knots,
وخرقاء قد تاهت على من يرومها
The ruins have wandered astray over one who seeks them,
في كنف الله ظاعن ظعنا
In God's protection, grieving, I grieve
وورد بستان قحابية
The rose of the fragrant garden
قامر بالنفس في هوى قمر
He gambled with his soul desiring a moon,
ويكشف بالآراء ما كان مشكلا
He reveals with opinions what was problematic
صاح غمضت وما
My companion closed his eyes though no drowsiness
فلأشكرن لدير متى ليلة
I thank the monastery of Matthew one night
بحمرة وجه لذاك الهلال
With the redness of that crescent's face
وسحاب يجر في الأرض ذيلي
أهلا بشمس مدام من يدي قمر
دم المجد أجراه الطبيب وعصبت
وبدر دجى يمشي به غصن رطب
ما عذرنا في حبسنا الأكوابا
واستشرفت نفسي إلى مستشرف
حور جعلن وقد رحلن وداعنا
لو أشرقت لك شمس ذاك الهودج
وتأتي بك الحاجات عفوا كأنما
محاسن الدير تسبيحي ومسباحي
أنظر خليلي ببطن جلق هل
قبر تود العلى ضنا بساكنه
أيدت ملك معز دولة هاشم
حور شغلن قلوبنا بفراغ
بقاع أشرقت فكأن فيها
لا ترى رأيه يضل عن الرشد
يا من جفا في القرب ثم نأى
غدت دار الأمير كما روينا
وجاهل بالغرام قلت له
قل للشريف المستجار
