الحمد لله لا شريك له
Praise be to God, who has no partner
تعلم فإن الله ليس كصنعه
Learn, for God is not like His creation
قالت لأخت له قصيه عن جنب
My friend, the path is long
من يطمس الله عينيه فليس
He whose eyes God blinds will not
الخيط الأبيض ضوء الصبح منفلق
The white thread is the light of dawn unfolding
المطعمون الطعام في السنة ال
Those who feed the hungry in the year of crisis
إن الحدائق في الجنان ظليلة
The gardens in Paradise are shady,
وما لي لا أحييه وعندي
Why should I not greet him, when I have
لك الحمد والنعماء والملك ربنا
Yours are the praise, the blessings, and the kingdom, our Lord
أبا مطر هلم إلى صلاح
O Abu Matar, come to reconciliation
يا ليلة لم تبن من القصر
O night that did not last long in the palace
ولا يوم الحساب وكان يوما
Nor the Day of Reckoning, though it be
عين بكى بالمسبلات أبا
A tearful eye for Abu Al-Harith
نحن ثقيف عزنا منيع
We are Thaqif, our glory is impregnable
أَحلام صبيان إذا ما
Dreams of children when
فصلقنا في مراد صلقة
We traveled with purpose through barren land
فما بلغت كف امرىء متناولا
No hand can reach glory, except by grasping for more.
جهنم تلك لا تبقي بغيا
Hell does not spare the wicked
لم يخلق السماء والنجوم
The heavens and stars were not created,
ليطلب الثأر أمثال ابن ذي يزن
To take revenge are the likes of the son of Dhi Yazan
عطاؤك زين لامرئ إن حبوته
Your generosity adorns a man if you endow him
ولقد رأيت الفاعلين وفعلهم
I have seen the doers and their deeds,
نفشت فيه عشاء غنم
A flock scattered in it an evening meal
لو يدب الحولي من ولد
If only a yearling gazelle wandered from her young,
رشدت وأنعمت ابن عمر وإنما
You have been rightly guided and favored, son of Umar, indeed
زعم ابن جدعان وليس بكاذب
Ibn Juda'an claims, and he is no liar,
كانت لهم جنة إذ ذاك ظاهرة
They had a garden back then, overflowing,
ثم لوط أخو سدوم أتاها
Lot, brother of Sodom, came to it
كن كالمجشر إذ قالت رعيته
Be like Al-Mujashshir when his flock said:
لقيت المهالك في حربنا
You met destruction in our war,
فإن تسألينا كيف نحن فإننا
If you were to ask us how we are
الحمد لله الذي لم يتخذ
Praise be to God, who has not taken
لا يذهبن بك التفريط منتظرا
Don't let impatience make you act rashly
كيف الجحود وإنما خلق الفتى
How ungrateful is the lad
وميز في إنفاقه بين مصلح
He distinguished in his spending between what improves
إن التكرم والندى من عامر
The generosity and dew are from 'Amir
إذا أتى موهنا وقد نام صحبي
When my companion comes humiliated and asleep
وفي دينكم من رب مريم آية
And the birth of Jesus is a sign for you in your religion, from God, Mary's son
وإني بليلي والديار التي أرى
By night and the home where I see the fires burning
الحمد لله ممسانا ومصبحنا
Praise be to Allah when we reach morning and evening
اصبر النفس عند كل ملم
Be patient, O soul, in every calamity
والحية الحتفة الرقشاء أخرجها
The venomous viper, curled up and stippled
والطوط نزرعه فيها فنلبسه
We will plant cotton and wear it as clothes
عند ذي العرش يعرضون عليه
Before the Lord of the Throne they shall be made to appear
أربا واحدا أم ألف رب
One Lord or a thousand lords
جزى الله الأجل المرء نوحا
God rewarded the most noble man, Noah
سبحانه ثم سبحانا يعود له
Glory be to Him, then glory be
إذ آبهتهم ولم يدروا بفاحشة
When it perplexed them, though they knew not they had done abominable deed,
له نفيان يحفش الأكم وقعه
He has two eyes that rouse the darkness
كأنما الورد الذي نشره
The roses we strew
ومن صنعه يوم فيل الحبوش
He who did his work on the day of Fil al-Habash
ورأيت من عبد المدان خلائقا
I saw the noble habits of the servant of Madan
قومي إياد لو أنهم أمم
My people, the Iyad, if only they were a nation,
علم ابن جدعان بن عمرو
The son of Jud'an bin 'Amr knew
كميت بهيم اللون ليس بفارض
A shirt of beautiful color, neither tight nor loose,
نهرا جاريا وبيتا عليا
A flowing river and a lofty home
جلبنا النصح تحمله المطايا
We brought advice, borne by camels,
كثمود التي تفتكت الدين
Like Thamud whose faith was broken
إن الصفي بن النبيت مملكا
Indeed, Safiy the son of al-Nabit is a king
أأذكر حاجتي أم قد كفاني
Shall I mention my need, or is your bashfulness enough for me?
من سبأ الحاضرين مأرب إذ
From Saba of those present at Ma'rib, when
وبفرعون إذا تشاق له
When the waters parted for Pharaoh
عرفت الدار قد أقوت سنينا
I knew the house though years have passed
فما أعتبت في النائبات معتب
So I do not blame misfortunes when they come,
غذوتك مولودا وعلتك يافعا
You were a newborn that I nourished, and a youth that I raised,
لك الحمد والمن رب العباد
All praise and bounty belong to You, Lord of all beings
والناس تحتك اقدام وأنت الهم
While people trample beneath your feet, you bear their troubles on your head,
وقد يقتل الجهل السؤال ويشتفي
Ignorance may be killed by questions, and vision cured,
قد كان ذو القرنين قبلي مسلما
The two-horned had been before me a Muslim
ألا بكيت على الكرا
Alas! Did you weep for the generous ones
إلى الله أهدي مدحتي وثنائيا
To God I dedicate my praise and eulogy
إله العالمين وكل أرض
God of the worlds and of every land
يا نفس مالك دون الله من واق
O soul, what thoughts distract you from God
كل عيش وإن تطاول دهرا
All life, however long it lasts,
حنانيك إن الجن كنت رجاءهم
Your tenderness, for the jinn were your hope
يوقف الناس للحساب جميعا
إن آيات ربنا باقيات
يرن على مغزيات العقاق
إن الغلام مطيع من يؤدبه
إذا قيل من رب هذي السما
فما أنابوا لسلم حين تنذرهم
أضاعوني وأي فتى أضاعوا
دار قومي في منزل غير ضنك
يلومونني في إشتراء
ذكر ابن جدعان
غدا جيران أهلك ظاعنينا
نحن بنينا طائفا حصينا
من كان ذا عضد يدرك ظلامته
وأبو اليتامى كان يحسن أوسهم
دحوت البلاد فسويتها
يظل يشب كيرا
مجدوا الله فهو للمجد أهل
اقترب الوعد والقلوب إلى
أداحيت برجلين رجلا تغيرها
إن عمرا وما تجشم عمرو
أبوك ربيعة الخير بن قرط
يدعون بالويل فيها لا خلاق لهم
والأرض سوى بساطا ثم قدرها
أنا الذائد الحامي الذمار وإنما
فلو قتلوا بحرب ألف ألف
قومي ثقيف إن سألت وأسرتي
ومرهنة عند الغراب حبيبه
