تمنيت المنية يوم قالوا
I wished for death the day they said
لا تحقرن عالما وإن خلقت
Do not belittle a scholar though his clothes
العالم العاقل ابن نفسه
The wise scholar is self-reliant
ليس السليم سليم أفعى حرة
The one unhurt is not unhurt from a heated snakebite,
إن الذي أبقيت من جسمه
The remnants of his body which you left,
ثوى بين أثناء الحشا منك لوعة
A burning longing for you lingers amid the arid shrubbery
هنيئا لعينك ورد الكرى
Congratulations to your eyes, the roses of all
عيون ما يلم بها الرقاد
Eyes that insomnia cannot subdue
على أي رغم ظلت أغضي وأكظم
However I stayed silent and suppressed
وحمراء قبل المزج صفراء
Red before mixing, yellow afterwards
نجم العلى بعدك منقض
The loftiest star has lost its glow since you departed
لن تستطيع لأمر الله تعقيبا
No power can change what Allah decrees,
جزعت أن يقال دام عبيط
She was distressed lest it be said an ignoble captive
وله نابه وخطب جليل
He has a bright, splendid oration
أصبحوا بعد جميع فرقا
Roses are red, violets are blue
ثوب الشباب علي اليوم بهجته
The garb of youth cloaks me in joy today
يا أكرم الناس آباء ومفتخرا
O most generous of people in ancestry and pride
لا تركنن إلى الهوى
Do not incline toward passion
ولي صاحب ما كنت أهوى اقترابه
I had a friend I never longed to be near
إنما فازت قداح المنايا
The cups of destiny have only triumphed
أرى الشيب مذ جاوزت خمسين دائبا
Since passing fifty I see gray hairs daily
أماطت لثاما عن أقاح الدمائث
She unveiled a watering place from the remains of campsites
مني علي براحة من مهجة
Grant me respite from torment
وقد ألفت زهر النجوم رعايتي
The blossoms of the stars have grown accustomed to my gaze
يرجي اصطباري وأي اصطبار
He hopes for my patience, but what patience
غابوا فعيشي ناصب من بعدهم
They left, so my life after them is full of sorrows
مناويك في بذل النوال وإنه
Your gifts of bounty continuously flow, yet
وإذا تنكرت البلاد
When the countries are unrecognizable
جام يكون من العقيق الأحمر
A cup made of red agate
صدغ كقادمة الخطاف منعطف
A cheek like a bough bent o'er by nesting birds
حجابك صعب يجبه الحر دونه
Your veil is hard, the free man struggles against it
الناس مثل زمانهم
People are like their time
صارمته فتواصلت أحزانه
His harshness connected his sorrows
ودعته حين لا تودعه
I bid him farewell when souls bid not goodbye
زفرات للقلب فيها إذا ما
Sighs for the heart wherein, when grief
عفظير إنا اختلفنا
O clever one, we have differed
رب ليل أطاله ألم الشوق
Many a night whose length was made long by the pain of love and loss of sleep, yet it was brief
قالوا صحوت فقلت تأبى لوعة
They said you woke up, so I said anguish refuses
ظعنوا ففي كنف الإله وحفظه
They were unjust, yet under God's protection and care
فنن على دعص تألق فوقه
A star shone brightly above a hilltop,
لك العهد عهد الله ألا يزال لي
To you I pledge, a pledge of God that shall not cease
وتفاحة من سوسن صيغ نصفها
And an apple from a lily formed half of it
لا تصغيا في الهوى لمن عذلا
Do not listen in love to one who has spurned me,
قلب تقطع فاستحال نجيعا
A heart torn asunder and turned to pieces
أهلا وسهلا باللذين أودهم
Welcome, welcome to those I love and cherish
صواب لعيني أن تصوب دموعها
It is right for my eyes to aim their tears,
جريء على قتل النفوس وإنه
Fearless of killing souls, yet he
عصى عاذليه واعترته لجاجة
He disobeyed his reproachers, obstinacy overtaking him,
وهذي ثماني جارحات عددتها
These are eight body parts I have counted
الساق والأذن والفخذان والكبد
The shin and the ear and the thighs and the liver
ضمان أن يكنف مذ تولى
Since he turned away has been my guarantee
لا يفوت الموت من حذر
Death cannot be evaded by caution
إذا رأيت امرءا في حال عسرته
When you see a man in his time of need
شاب ماء الجفون بالدم شوق
A youth whose eyelids brimmed with love's desire,
جهلت فعاديت العلوم وأهلها
You opposed knowledge and its people out of ignorance
نهنه بوادر دمعك المهراق
The first drops of your tears foretell
طاب فقد الحياة بعد أناس
Gone are the joys of life, now that friends are gone,
بنا لا بك الوصب المؤلم
It is not you we blame for this painful fate,
وعيشك لا زلت حلف الضنى
By your life, I still swear affliction,
مقل الجآذر نبلها الألحاظ
Tender of root, their glances are its nobility,
كن كيف شئت فإنني لك وامق
Be as you wish, for I am devoted to you
دعا دمعة الشوق المبرح دعوة
He called the tears of passionate longing with an invitation,
أعن الشمس عشاء
In the evening the sun revealed itself,
أمن نحو العقيق شجاك برق
Did lightning from Carnelian strike you as it flashed,
ليس المقصر وانيا كالمقصر
The hesitant is not like the negligent.
يا سائلا عما يذكر في الفتى
O questioner, about what makes a young man masculine
وأفضل قسم الله للمرء عقله
ومن تك نزهته قينة
ديار الحي بالرس
وما أحد من ألسن الناس سالما
يسعد ذو الجد ويشقى الحريص
أرى الناس قد أغروا ببغي وريبة
كم عاقل أخره عقله
لو أن قلبا ذاب من كمد
وليلة سامرت عيني كواكبها
أقول لورقاوين في فرع نخلة
عانقت منه وقد مال النعاس به
وما في الأرض أشقى من محب
غراء لو جلت الخدور شعاعها
أبقيت لي سقما يمازج عبرتي
بقلبي لذع من هواك مبرح
حماه الكرى طيف يهم بجفنه
خامرت قلبه هموم تلظت
ذاب من فرط شوقه القلب حتى
سيرة الوامق انقياد إذا قيد
نمت عن ليل مدنف حيران
جسم لجين قميصه ذهب
تبسم المزن وانهلت مدامعه
لو أنزل الوحي على نفطويه
يا من يقبل كف كل مخرق
الله يعلم والراضي وشيعته
بنفسي ثرى ضاجعت في بيته البلى
بملتفتيه للمشيب طوالع
وإذا قرأت كلامه قدرته
سليمان الوزير يزيد نقصا
أبا حسن والمرء يخلق صورة
حر تعبده اصطناعك عنده
لا تدخلنك ضجرة من سائل
يا ظبية أشبه شيء بالمها
