لله في كل ما يجري به القدر

In all that Destiny impels occur

أقلا ملامي فالحديث طويل

Blame me less, for talk would be prolonged

أمن أجل أن بان الخليط الملائم

Is it because the suitable mixture became clear

بين العلى والقنا والمشر في نسب

Between doom and spear and honored lineage

تهلل وجه الكون وابتسم السعد

The face of the universe beamed with joy and good fortune smiled,

تهلل وجه الدين وابتسم النصر

The face of religion has brightened and victory has smiled,

خليلي مرا بي على الدار واربعا

My two friends, pass by my abode and stop awhile,

نعم هذه أطلال سلمى فسلم

Yes, these are the ruins of Sulma, so bid them peace

يا بارقا بات يحيي ليله سهرا

O lightening that brought life to his sleepless night

وقفت على دار لمية غيرت

I stood at the abode of Layla which strong winds

شموس من التحقيق في طالع السعد

Suns of truthfulness rose in the ascendant of good fortune,

تعز وأنى والمصاب جليل

Still grieving, for how great is this calamity,

هو الدهر لا يصغي إلى من يعاتبه

Time is not one to heed the complaints of those who reproach it,

هو الموت ما منه ملاذ ومهرب

Death, from which there is no refuge or escape

أعد علي حديث المنحنى أعد

Repeat to me the soft words, repeat them

قد بلغتك المهاري منتهى الأمل

The skillful have conveyed to you the furthest of hopes

الحمد لله صبح الحق قد وضحا

Praise be to Allah, the light of truth has shone

قفوا بي على الربع المحيل أسائله

Stand by me in this ruined abode and ask it

تلألأت بك للإسلام أنوار

The lights of Islam shone brightly through you,

أبى الله إلا أن تكون لك العقبى

God willed that you shall gain ascendancy,

وفقت مرتحلا في الورد والصدر

You were granted success as a traveler in love and intimacy,

ربع تأبد من شبه المها العين

A quarter that has been eternally adorned with the beauty of the full moon's visage,

هي الربوع فقف في عرصة الدار

The gardens are in full bloom, so pause in the courtyard of home

تسليت إذ بان الشباب وودعا

I found solace when youth bid farewell,

أرقت لبرق ناصب يتألق

I was kept awake by persistent flashes of lightning

سفر الزمان بغرة المستبشر

The days have journeyed with the exultation of the blithe,

أفادك مجد الدهر صدق العزائم

Has the glory of time benefited you through steadfast determination?

منال العلى إلا عليك محرم

The heights of glory are forbidden to all but you,

ترى من حنيني كان شجو الحمائم

My longing was the lament of doves,

هذي العلوم التي كنا نحدثها

These sciences that we used to be told of

عصيت فيك مقال اللائم اللاحي

I disobeyed the reproach of the blamer in you,

إن لم تعني على شجوي فلا تلم

كسوتني حلة تبلى محاسنها

العز والمجد في الهندية القضب

عج بي على الربع حيث الرند والبان

بلوغ الأماني في شفار القواضب

أهاج له ذكر الحمى ومرابعه

قدوم حكى وشي الربيع المنمنا

أجل إنه ربع الحبيب فسلم

لله في الأرض ألطاف وأسرار

يهنيك يا عصمة الدنيا مع الدين

هل لعهد قد مضى والدهر سمح

ضمان على أن الغرام طويل

أريج مجد من الريان حيانا

برغم المعالي فارق الدست صاحبه

لمثل ذا الخطب فلتبك العيون دما

أهكذا البدر تخفي نوره الحفر

يا صاحبي دعا عذلي وتأنيبي
