- أبلغا جاري المهلب عنيYou two, tell my neighbor al-Muhallab on my behalf:
- أتاك بياسر النبء الجليلThe momentous news reached you at Yasir;
- أتانا رسول من رقية ناصحA trustworthy messenger came to us from Ruqayya,
- أتقعد في تكريت لا في عشيرةDo you sit still in Tikrit, not in the tribe
- أتكني عن رقية أم تبوحWill you speak of Ruqayya by allusion, or declare it openly?
- أتيناك نثني بالذي أنت أهلهWe have come to praise you for that of which you are worthy—
- إذا زرت عبد الله نفسي فداؤهWhenever I visit Abd Allah—may my soul be his ransom—
- أرقتني بالزابيين همومAt the two Zabs, worries kept me awake;
- أزجرت الفؤاد منك الطروباHave you restrained your yearning heart,
- أصحوت عن أم البنينHave you sobered from your love of Umm al-Banin,
- أضحت رقية دونها البشرRuqayya now lies beyond al-Bashar;
- أعاتك بنت العبشمية عاتكاO ‘Atika, daughter of the ‘Abshamite woman, ‘Atika,
- أقفرت الرقتان فالقلسThe two Raqqas have fallen desolate, and al-Qalas;
- أقفرت بعد عبد شمس كداءKada' lies deserted, with ʿAbd Shams gone,
- ألا أبلغ أبا إسحاق أنيListen! Tell Abu Ishaq that I
- ألا أبلغا عني الأصم رسالةHear now, you two: convey a message from me to al-Asamm.
- ألا أيها الضيف الذي يطلب القرىTake heed, O guest who seeks hospitality
- ألا أيها القلب اللجوج المعذبAh, you obstinate, tormented heart!
- ألا طرقت من آل نذرة طارقهLo, a night visitor came from Nadhra's kin,
- ألا هزئت بنا قرشيةAh, we were mocked by a Qurayshi
- أم البنين سلبتني حلميUmm al-Banin, you have robbed me of my composure,
- إن الخليط قد ازمعوا تركيThey gathered to abandon me
- إن الرزية يوم مسكنIndeed, the calamity on the day of Mas-
- إن النساء إذا ينهين عن خلقIndeed, when women are forbidden a habit,
- إن امرأ يرجو وفاء لذمةIndeed, a man who hopes for fidelity to a covenant
- إن عهدي بهم غداة استقلواTruly, I remember them on the morning they departed
- إن هذا الليل قد غسقاIndeed, this night has grown dark,
- أنت ابن مسلنطح البطاح ولمYou are a son of the broad, open plains, and never
- أنت ابن معتلج البطاحYou are the son of the thronging meeting-place of the valleys,
- أنزلاني فأكرماني ببتاLodge me, you two, and honor me at Battā.
- إنما كان طلحة الخير بحراTalha the Good was nothing but a sea,
- إنها بين عامر بن لؤيIndeed, she stands between ʿĀmir ibn Luʾayy,
- أوصي شريحا إن هلكت ومحصناI charge Shurayh, should I die, and Miḥṣan,
- بات قلبي تشفه الأوجاعAll night, pains wore my heart away,
- بان الحي فاغتربواThe clan departed and went far from home.
- بان الخليط الذي به نثقThe mixture with which we bond
- بشر الظبي والغراب بسعدىThe antelope and the crow brought me good news
- بكرت علي عواذليMy reproachers came early to me,
- بكي بدمعك واكف القطرMourn, with your tears falling drop by drop,
- بلد تأمن الحمامة فيهA land where the dove is safe,
- تذكر القلب من أسمائه ذكراThe heart recalled a memory of its Asma',
- تركت قلبي قريحاShe left my heart wounded;
- حبذا الدلال والغنجHow lovely are coyness and coquetry,
- حي الأختين قد أجم الفراقOh sisters, farewell has come close
- حيوا حليلة بعلها سلامهGreet Sallāmah, her husband's consort.
- حييت عنا أم ذي الودعGreetings to you from us, O mother of the child with cowrie shells,
- خليلي من قيس إذا ما قطعتماMy two friends from Qays, when you have severed
- ذهب الصبا وتركت غيتيهYouth has gone, and I have forsaken my folly.
- ذهبت ولم تزر أهل الشفاءYou went away without visiting the people of al-Shifa,
- رقي بعمركم لا تهجريناRuqayy, by your life, do not forsake us.
- رقية أمسى حبلها قد تقضباRuqayya—her cord has now been severed,
- رقية تيمت قلبيRiqayya has orphaned my heart
- رقية لا رقية أيها الرجلRuqayya—not Ruqayya, O man!
- زعم ابن قيس وهو غير مكذبIbn Qays asserted—and none calls him a liar—
- زودتنا رقية الأحزاناRuqayya furnished us with sorrows
- سائلا قندا خليليAsk Qand, my two friends,
- سخنة في الشتاء باردة الصيفWarm in winter, cool in summer,
- شأتك عين دموعها غسقAn eye has grieved you, its tears pouring,
- شب بالعال من كثيرة نارA fire from Kathira was kindled at al-ʿAl.
- شطت رقية عن بلادكRuqayyah has gone far from your
- طرق الخيال المعتريThe haunting vision came by night
- طرقته أسماء أم حلماDid Asma visit him by night—or was it a dream?
- ظعن الأمير بأحسن الخلقThe prince departed with the fairest of creation,
- ظعنت لتحزننا كثيرKathira departed to grieve us;
- عاد له من كثيرة الطربLonging for Kathirah returned to him,
- عبد العزيز فضحت جيشك كلهمAbd al-Aziz, you have disgraced your whole army,
- علل القوم يشربواPly the company, that they may drink,
- فلن أجيب بليل داعيا أبداSo I will never answer a caller by night.
- فوالله لا يأتي بخير صديقهاSo, by God, no good will come to her friend
- في مقبل الأمر تشبيه ومدبرهIn the affair’s beginning and its end there is a likeness—
- قالت كثيرة لي قد كبرتKathira said to me, 'You have grown old,
- قد أتانا من آل سعدى رسولA messenger has indeed come to us from Suʿdā's household.
- قد تولى الحي فانطلقاThe tribe has turned away and departed,
- كاده الأشرم الذي جاء بالفيلAl-Ashram, who came with the elephant, plotted against him;
- لا تخافي أن تهجري ما بقيناDo not be afraid to leave, so long as we live.
- لا خير في المجتدى في الحين تسألهThere is no good in one you ask for bounty in an hour of peril.
- لا يعجبنك صاحبNever let a companion impress you
- لججت بحبك أهل العراقYou have pestered the people of Iraq with your love,
- لحي من أمية ليسA beard from Umayya is not
- لقد أورث المصرين خزيا وذلةIndeed, disgrace and humiliation have been bequeathed to the two garrison cities
- لقد فتنت ريا وسلامة القساIndeed, Rayyā and Sallāma have bewitched the priest,
- لم تتلفع بفضل مئزرهاShe did not wrap herself in the spare length of her waistcloth—
- لم تكلم بالجلهتين الرسومThe ruins at al-Jalhatayn did not speak—
- لم يصح هذا الفؤاد من طربهThis heart has not sobered from its rapture,
- لن تراها ولو تأملت منهاYou will not see her, even if you examine her closely,
- ليت شعري أأول الهرج هذاWould that I knew: is this the beginning of bloodshed,
- ليت شعري أفاح رائحة المسكWould that I knew: has the scent of musk wafted?
- ما خير عيش بالجزيرة بعدماWhat good is life in al-Jazira after
- ما هاج من منزل بذي علمWhat longing a dwelling at Dhu 'Alam has stirred,
- مصعب كان منك أمضى بعيداMus‘ab was far more resolute than you,
- معقل القوم من قريش إذا ماThe refuge of the people of Quraysh, whenever
- من عذيري ممن يضن بمبذولWho will defend me against one who begrudges me what is freely given
- نادتك والعيس سراع بناShe called out to you as the pale camels sped us onward,
- نضر الله أعظما دفنوهاMay God make radiant the bones they buried
- نعت السحائب والغمام بأسرهاThe clouds and cloudbanks, all of them, announced the death of
- هبت رياح من جانب السندWinds blew from the direction of al-Sanad.
- هل بادكار الحبيب من حرجCan there be any blame in remembering the beloved?
- هل تعرف الربع مقفرا خلقاDo you recognize the encampment, deserted and worn?
- هل للديار بأهلها علمDo the dwellings have knowledge of their people?
- وإذا قيل من هجان قريشAnd when it is asked, “Who is the pure-born noble of Quraysh?”
- واضح لونها كبيضة أدحيىHer complexion is radiant, like an egg in an ostrich’s nest;
- والطير إن سار سارت فوق موكبهAnd if he marches, the birds fly above his procession,
- وسلاف مما يعتق حلAnd pure, lawful wine of the kind left to age,
- وقولا لعبد الله ويحك غنناAnd say, you two, to Abd Allah: 'Alas for you, sing to us
- وقومك لا تجهل عليهم ولا تكنAnd do not act insolently toward your people, nor be
- وما تصنع بالسرAnd what do you do with the secret
- يا بشر يا ابن الجعفرية ماO son of Jafariya, Allah did not create your hands for stinginess
- يا ديار الكواعبO dwellings of budding-breasted maidens,
- يا سند الظاعنين من أحدO hillside of those who departed from Uhud,
- يا قلب ويحك لا تذهب بك الحرقO heart, alas for you! Let not burning pangs carry you away.
- يا لقوم عادني نكسيO people, my relapse has returned to me,
- يا لقومي قد أرقتني الهمومO my people, cares have kept me awake,
- يوم تبدي البيض عن أسأقهاOn the day the fair-skinned women bare their shins,
