Indeed, disgrace and humiliation have been bequeathed to the two garrison cities
by a slain man who rests at the Monastery of the Catholicos.
تَوَلّىundertook قِتالَfighting المارِقينَthe renegades بِنَفسِهِby himself
وَقَدand already أَسلَماهُboth abandoned him مُبعَدٌan outsider وَحَميمُand a close friend
He undertook the fight against the renegades himself,
though stranger and close friend alike had abandoned him.
فَماso not نَصَحَتacted faithfully لِلَّهِto God بَكرُBakr بنُson of وائِلٍWa'il
وَلاand not صَبَرَتstood firm عِندَat اللِقاءِthe clash تَميمُTamim
For Bakr ibn Wa'il was not faithful to God,
nor did Tamim stand firm in battle.
وَلَوand if كانَhe had been بَكرِيّاًa man of Bakr تَعَطَّفَrallied حَولَهُaround him
كَتائِبُbattalions يَغليboils حَميُهاtheir ardor وَيَدومُand endures
And had he been of Bakr, there would have rallied around him
battalions whose ardor boils and endures.
وَلَكِنَّهُbut it was that ضاعَwas lost الذِمامُthe bond of protection وَلَمand not يَكُنthere was
بِهاin it مُضَرِيٌّa man of Mudar يَومَday ذاكَthat كَريمُnoble
But the bond of protection was lost, and there was
no noble man of Mudar there that day.
جَزىmay repay اللَهُGod كوفِيّاًa Kufan هُناكَthere مَلامَةًblame
وَبَصرِيَّهُمand their Basran إِنَّindeed المُليمَthe blameworthy مُليمُblameworthy
May God repay a Kufan there with blame,
and their Basran too: indeed, the blameworthy is blameworthy.
وَإِنَّand indeed بَنيsons of العَلّاتِco-wives أَخلَواleft unguarded ظُهورَناour backs
وَنَحنُand we صَريحٌof pure lineage بَينَهُمamong them وَصَميمُand of true stock
And indeed, our paternal half-brothers have left our backs exposed,
though we are of pure lineage among them, and of their very stock.
فَإِنso if نَفنَwe perish لاnot يَبقَواthey remain أولَئِكَthose men بَعدَناafter us
لِذيfor one possessing حُرمَةٍinviolability فيamong المُسلِمينَthe Muslims حَريمُprotection
For if we perish, those men will not remain after us
as protection for anyone of honor among the Muslims.
