Would that I knew: has the scent of musk wafted?

And I do not think I have company at al-Khayf,

On the day the sons of Umayya were absent from me,

And the noble men among the sons of Abd Shams.

Forbearing men when sound judgment is shaken,

    With faces smooth as dinars;

    Orators on the pulpits, knights

Upon them, and speakers who are not mute.

They are not faulted when silent, and if they

Speak, they hit the mark and speak without ambiguity.

Their night and day are generosity, whenever

Rain fails through winter and drought.
