لِ فَوَلّى وَجَيشُهُ مَهزومُ
Al-Ashram, who came with the elephant, plotted against him;
The insolent man who came with the elephant army
Then he turned back, his army defeated.
Turned and fled, his forces routed,
وَاِستَهَلَّتand showered عَلَيهِمُupon them الطَيرُthe birds بِالجَنwith stones (continued)

And the birds showered stones upon them,
The birds began to prey on them,
Until he seemed to have been stoned.
Pecking the bodies as if pelting them with stones.

That one—whoever among men attacks him returns
Thus is the fate of one whom the people attack—
A routed remnant of armies, disgraced.
He flees despised, his great army brought low.
