وَشَطَّتand she went far away لِكَيso that تَزدادَshe may increase بُعداًin distance وَتَذهَباand she may depart
Ruqayya—her cord has now been severed,
Rukayya's rope has worn thin
And she has gone far away, to grow more distant and depart.
As she wanders farther to be free
بَغيضٌhateful إِلَيَّto me الشَرُّevil حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen أَتىit came
فَحَلَّthen it settled بِداريin my home قُلتُI said لِلشَرِّto evil مَرحَباwelcome
Evil is hateful to me—until, when it comes
Evil is hateful to me until it comes
And settles in my home, I say to evil, "Welcome!"
Knocking on my door, then I welcome evil
لِكَيso that يَعلَمَmay know الأَقوامَthe peoples شَرّيmy evil وَمَأقِطيand my battleground
إِذاwhen لَمnot أَجِدI find إِلّاexcept عَلىupon الشَرِّevil مَركَباa mount
So that the peoples may know my evil and my battleground,
So people may know my own evil ways
When I find no course but to ride upon evil.
When I find no mount but evil itself
وَمِثلِكَand many a man like you لاذَمتُI fastened firmly السِفارَthe halter بِأَنفِهِto his nose
وَأَحذَيتُهُand I bestowed on him غَمّاًanguish إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle تَغَضَّباhe grew angry
And many a man like you—I have fastened the halter to his nose,
One like you, I blame the envoy to his face
And bestowed anguish on him whenever he grew angry.
And provoke his rage when angered
