إِنَّindeed اِمرِأًa man يَرجوhopes for وَفاءًfaithfulness لِذِمَّةٍto a covenant
إِلىwith غَيرِany other than عَوفٍʿAwf مِنof سُلَيمٍSulaym لَحائِنُsurely doomed
Indeed, a man who hopes for fidelity to a covenant
with any of Sulaym but ʿAwf is surely doomed.

May God reward Riʿl and Qunfudh for the day of al-Marj
with a generous reward on the day when innermost thoughts are tested.
فَماso no كانَthere was مِنon the part of ذَكوانَDhakwān ذَنبٌfault لِدَعوَةٍfor a call
دَعَوهاthey raised it وَلَكِنَّand yet اِبنَthe son of حَيدَةَḤayda واهِنُweak
So Dhakwān bore no blame for a call
they raised; but Ibn Ḥayda was weak.
فَلَوso had أَسمَعَmade hear الجَحّافَal-Jaḥḥāf أَوor نالَreached صَوتُهاits sound
صُبَيغَṢubaygh بنَson of خَولِيٍّKhawlī لَعَزَّwould surely have been secure الظَعائِنُthe women in howdahs
Had he made al-Jaḥḥāf hear it, or had its sound reached
Ṣubaygh ibn Khawlī, the women in howdahs would have been safe.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her سيريtravel on ظَعينَO woman in a howdah فَلَنso will never تَرَيyou see

So I said to her, “Travel on, woman in your howdah; you will never see
humiliation with your own eyes after Marj al-Ḍayāzin.
وَسيريand travel on إِلىto القَومِthe people الَّذينَwho أَبوهُمُtheir father

And travel to the people whose father
is feared in Mecca for his fang and claws.”
